The 21st Century Cures Act is likely to have a major, disruptive impact on health providers and
payers, with new rules on patient access to medical records and the interoperability of those
records across networks expected in 2020. Our research focused on tapping the views of senior
health IT executives regarding awareness of the Act and preparedness by their organizations for
compliance and its impact on healthcare consumers.
SITUATION: THE REGULATIONS FOR 21ST
CENTURY CURES ACT ARE BEING FINALIZED

ü Only 18% of Health IT executives are very familiar with the 21st Century Cures Act. 17% have
never heard of it or know nothing about it.
ü 40% of respondents believe the Act will have little or no impact on the IT operations of their
organizations.
ü Only 11% of respondents believe their organization is very prepared for the changes that will
result from the Act.
ü 30% of respondents believe the Act will have little impact on their organization’s ability to
meet the needs of their patients/customers. Only 11% think it will have a significant impact.
