The 1885 Benz Patent Motorwagen was the first automobile recognized as such. It was designed and built in 1885 in Mannheim, Germany by German engineer Karl Benz. The three-wheeled Motorwagen had a single-cylinder four-stroke engine mounted in the rear and was capable of a top speed of around 10 mph.
