What is the most common, number 1 cause of death in the world? Sickness?
Car accidents?
The answer is a shocking one: slips and falls are considered the world’s most common
form of non-vehicular death!
Research has SLIP/FALLS identified as “The number one cause of non-vehicular
accidental death”.
Especially for the elderly, a fall may cause severe damage to their old and brittle
bones and injuries from such simple things can be very costly to cure. For companies,
you may be liable for damages and injuries caused to your employees if it can be proven
that the cause of the slip & fall is improper safety measures. One thing is for sure –
prevention is better than cure.

3. Preventing Slip/Falls is no accident
We have all suffered from slippery conditions sometime or other. It is not necessary to
have mathematical formulas or sophisticated pieces of equipment to tell us when a floor
is slippery and dangerous.
How does it work? It all comes down to the reason why floors are slippery. As you
know, you don’t need to be a scientist or have special equipment to tell why the floor is
slippery. It is usually caused by a build-up of grease, bacteria/fungi or improper cleaning
methods. That’s why by putting on a coating depending on the surface (e.g. wood,

8. Guidelines to prevent workplace slips, trips and falls
That momentary lapse of inattention thinking about a personal problem or distracted by an activity that
ends in a slip, trip or fall. A stumble down a stairway. A trip over an uneven surface. Slipping on the ice.
It can lead to a variety of regrettable events ranging from a simple bruised shin to an extremely serious
injury. It’s just one of a variety of conditions and situations that set the stage for slips, trips and falls in
the workplace.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, slips, trips and falls make up the majority of general
industry accidents, which account for:
o 15 percent of all accidental deaths per year, the second-leading cause behind motor vehicles
o About 25 percent of all reported injury claims per fiscal year
o More than 95 million lost work days per year – about 65 percent of all work days lost
o In general, slips and trips occur due to a loss of traction between the shoe and the walking surface or
an inadvertent contact with a fixed or moveable object which may lead to a fall

11. Under wet conditions a suction effect is created on the surface of the floor.
Wet floors no longer pose a problem because the vacuum capacity of the floor is actually
enhanced when exposed to water reducing the foot from slipping.
How long will Floor Treatment prevent Slippery Surfaces ?
Non-slip tile and concrete treatment as mentioned is not a coating, it therefore cannot be
peeled off. It remains effective for many years until the floor surface itself has worn
down.
Does this treatment change the appearance the Floor?
“Non-slip treatment” will not detract from the floor’s natural appearance. Some fully
glazed surfaces may have a marginal loss of high glaze shine, this being equal to the
inevitable loss during normal wear and tear of the surface. Lightening of the floor surface
may occur, and oxidation of dirt particles may be visible following the application,
however this appearance will disappear after normal cleaning.

12. How to Maintain the Treated Floor Surface ?
Surfaces must remain free from grease and ingrained dirt to remain effective.
It is therefore important that the floor is kept clean or hosed down regularly.
It is recommended that the surface be cleaned with a long handled scrubbing brush
using a good quality cleaner.
The Anti-Slip Application – where to be apply?
“Non-Slip treatment” is applied continuously to the treated area until the floor
becomes Non-Slip.
oThe residual chemical is then washed off with water.
o “Non-slip treatment” can be applied to new or existing floors both indoors and
outdoors.

application.

13. What about Coatings for Slippery Tiled Areas?
Anti-slip coatings, similar to paint or varnish, are not recommended for tiled floors as the
coating does not successively adhere to the surface and will rub off or wear off in time! If
hygiene is important, bacteria build-up can occur around and under the coating.
