The Ballon d’Or is an annual Association Football award inaugurated in 1956.
Considered the most prestigious individual award in the sport, it is presented by France Football to the male Football player deemed to have performed best over the previous year.
Between 1956 and 1995 the Ballon d’Or was only open to European football players. In 1995 the rules were changed to include non-Europeans playing in European clubs. That year George Weah of Liberia became the first non-European to win it.
In 2007 the award became open to all footballers worldwide.
Between 2009 to 2015, following an agreement with FIFA, the award was merged with the FIFA Player of the Year Award to create the FIFA Ballon d’Or award. The partnership ended in 2016 and the award reverted to Ballon d’Or.
Lionel Messi has won the award most times, having won it six times, consecutively between 2009 and 2012. He is followed by Cristiano Ronaldo with five awards.
The Female Ballon d’Or (Ballon d’Or Feminin) was inaugurated at the 2nd December 2018 awards and was won by Ada Hederberg of Norway. Megan Rapinoe of the United States won the 2019 award.

The following slides outline the winners of the Ballon d’Or, chronologically, from 1956 to 2020.
