Golf Teaches Important Life Lessons
“Golf is the closest game to the game we call life. You get bad breaks from good shots; you
get good breaks from bad shots - but you have to play the ball where it lies.”
- Bobby Jones
   • Honesty
        – “Golf is based on honesty. Where else would somebody
admit to a seven on an easy par 3?” -Jimmy Demaret
   • Patience, Persistence, and Resilience
        – “If there is one thing I have learned during my years as a
professional, it is that the only constant thing about golf is
          its inconsistency.” –Jack Nicklaus
   • Humility
        – “Playing the game I have learned the meaning of humility.
It has given me an understanding of futility of the human
          effort” –Abba Eban
Golf can be Important in the Business
               World
 • Many corporate executives enjoy playing
   golf.
 • Company golf tournaments are a popular
way to raise money or to bring workers
   together.
 • How a person handles themselves on the
golf course can speak wonders about what
kind of business person they are.
Basics of the Golf Swing
1)Grip

2)Address and Posture

3)Swing
Gripping the Golf Club

• 3 primary ways to grip a golf club
   – The Vardon Overlapping Grip
   – The Interlocking Grip
   – The Ten-Finger (Baseball) Grip

Addressing the Golf Ball
• Factors for Proper Golf Setup Position
  – Alignment and Foot Position
  – Ball Position
  – Balance
  – Posture
  – Arm and Hand Position
Alignment and Foot Position
• At address your body (feet, knees, hips,
forearms, shoulders and eyes) should be
positioned parallel to the target line.
• The feet should be shoulder width apart for
  the middle irons.
• The target-side foot should be flared toward
the target from 20 to 40.
• The back foot should be square (90 degrees to
the target line) to slightly open.
Alignment and Foot Position

 Body Alignment
                   Foot Position
Ball Position
• The position of the ball depends solely
on which club you have selected.
Balance

• A golfer’s weight should always be
balanced on the balls of the toes.
• It is also important to understand which
foot most of the balance should be on.
  – Short Irons: 60% of weight on target side foot
  – Middle Irons: 50/50
  – Long Clubs: 60% of weight on back foot
Posture
• Knees
  – Should be slightly flexed and over the balls of the feet for
    balance
  – Your back knee should also be bent inward slightly
• Body
  – Should be bent at the hips (not waist), which will make your
bottom stick out slightly and your spine should make a 90°
angle with the shaft of the club
• Back
  – Your vertebrae should be in line, which will make your back
straight and prevent a slouching position.
  – Your back should also tilt slightly away from the target
Posture
Arm and Hand Position
• Hands should be using one of the three proper
  grips
• You arms should be hanging down naturally in
front of the zipper close to the front leg (left leg
for a right hander, right leg for left hander)

Notes de l'éditeur

  1. -Before I instruct you on how to properly swing a golf club, I believe it is necessary to understand the importance of golf in a person’s life.
  2. - A tee box is where a golfer hits their first shot of a hole. On most courses there are 4 or 5 tee boxes for each hole that gives players the opportunity to decide the difficulty and distance for each hole. There are professional tee boxes, ladies tees, youth tees, and a few options in-between.
  3. Honesty- Most golfers do not play in large tournaments where each of their shots are being watched and accounted for. Because there are no officials golfers must regulate and be honest with themselves and those they play with about the number of shots they take and where their ball lands. Patience and Persistence- I have been playing golf since the age of 8 and have found that it is one of the single most frustrating activities I have ever been a part of. One bad shot can make a hole very difficult, but you must try your best with each swing of the club to help counteract these mistakes. The only way to become better at golf is to keep calm through the difficult times, practice, and stay level-headed.Humility- No matter how well any golfer plays, whether it is a beginner or a professional, they can always play better. One of the most important aspects of golf is to understand your faults and to work on them endlessly and to the best of your ability. Golf is very humbling because every one of your weaknesses is on display for each swing you take.
  4. Golf is enjoyed by many corporate executives so understanding at least the basics of the game can be a bonus in the workplaceAlso, many corporations have company golf outings at least once a year. Some men and many women find themselves on the outside looking in during these periods. Most of the time during a round of golf is spent moving from shot to shot. This is a great time to discuss work or other life aspects with coworkers or even bosses. Being able to take part in these outings and holding your own on the golf course can help a person move up in the business world.
  5. Because I am not able to show you the proper grips with a golf club myself, watch this short, yet easy to understand demonstration by golf professional Richard Strongert.
  6. -Foot Position- for shorter irons, your stance should be 2 inches narrower to create a deeper arch which gives the golf ball more loft. For long irons and woods they should be two inches wider for better balance and to create a shallower swing in order to increase the distance the ball travels. -The target-side foot should be flared toward the target from 20 to 40 degrees. This is helpful because allows the body to rotate toward the target on the downswing. -The back foot should be square to slightly open so that your hips are able to turn on the backswing.
  7. Notice how, in the body alignment picture, this gentleman’s body is parallel with the line of his intended target. This includes his feet, shoulders, and head. His feet are also shoulder width apart, his front foot is flared outwards slightly, and his back foot is perpendicular to his target line. This is good foot position.
  8. Notice how the clubs with the steepest angles (such as the wedges, and high irons) are placed in the middle of the stance. This is to ensure the middle of the club head strikes the ball squarely. The longer irons (4 & 3), fairway woods, and the driver are all towards the front of the stance because the club face is flatter. This means that the ball needs to be struck on the slight upswing in order to lift it into the air.
  9. For short irons, your weight should be 60-percent on the target side foot (left foot for right-handers). For middle iron shots the weight should be 50/50 or equal on each foot. For your longest clubs, place 60% of your weight on the backside foot (right foot for right-handers). This will help you swing the club on the correct angle on the back swing.
  10. Notice how this man’s weight is on the balls of his toes, his knees are slightly bent, his back is straight, and his club shaft and spine are in a 90 degree angle. His knee is also flexed inward slightly and his spine is tilted backward at a slight angle. All of these are important techniques to remember in order to ensure consistency in a golf swing.
  11. This is a short video to help you understand the very basics of the swing itself.
  12. To sum up the video, the steps of the golf swing are: (I will demonstrate each motion while discussing the different steps.) Picture 2 and 3: the left arm and hand swing the club back on a slight inside path, whilst the right arm folds. The shoulders should turn fully along the same hip turn, both knees stay flexed and pointing to the front, whilst the club's toe should be pointing to the sky. Picture 4: the top of the backswing shows hips turned to 45 degrees and shoulders fully turned at 90 degrees, whilst the knees stay flexed with weight in the feet. Balance and body position needs to be maintained and downward resistance is in the hands.. Picture 5: the downswing should be initiated by the hands to which the body responds. The angle of the backswing is maintained through the downswing to ensure the club follows the correct path and also allows for the club to be released slightly just prior to impact. Thus clubhead speed is created through the ball. Picture 6: the impact position means the club should be square with the target and able to extend along the intended path of flight. At this point the shoulder line should be parallel with the club line as in the set-up but with open hips. Thus creating space for the swing through. Picture 7: extension through the ball is created by shifting weight through the hip and foot action, allowing the hands and arms to be swung through the ball generating power and direction. An important note in the basic golf swing is that the head is still looking at the original ball position at this point in order to create backward resistance. Picture 8: the follow through tells you if the swing has gone correct as if you come out in the correct position and facing the target without losing balance then the swing is a success
  13. To summarize, this is a good infographic representing everything you have learned. This infographic was created by Lorena Ochoa. Lorena Ochoa was one of the worlds best female golfers until her retirement in May of 2010.
