•  According to ICT (International telecommunication union), the number of mobile-cellular
subscriptions worldwide (feature phone and smart phone) is approaching the number of
global population (7.1 billion). Global mobile cellular subscriptions will reach 6.9 billion by
end 2014 thanks to rapid growth of mobile users in developing countries. 
•  Global mobile penetration rate will reach 96% by end 2014 from 34% in 2005. 
•  On the other hand, the number of Internet users and penetration rate are expected to reach
2.9 billion and 40.4% respectively in 2014.
More than 3 Quarters of All Mobile Subscriptions Belong to Developing Countries
•  Mobile subscriptions in developing countries has increased from 1.2 billion in 2005 to 5.0
billion in 2013, and is expected to reach 5.4 billion by end 2014. During the same period,
mobile subscribers in developed countries increased from 0.9 billion to 1.5 billion.
•  The developing countries’ share continues to increase and by end 2014, the number of
mobile subscriptions in the developing world will account for 78% (or more than three-
quarters) of the world’s total.

Mobile Penetration Rate
•  In developing countries, mobile penetration will reach 90% by end 2014, compared with
121% in developed countries.
•  Africa and Asia Pacific are the regions with the strongest mobile growth and the lowest
penetration rates. The penetration rate for Africa and Asia Pacific will reach 69%, 89%,
respectively, by end 2014. Penetration rates in the CIS countries, Arab States, the Americas
and Europe have reached levels above 100% (since 2012) and are expected to grow at less
than 2% in 2014.
