7. Balancing quality vs. costs
Costs for delivery are exploding. Quality is an important factor, but without
operational optimization it’s not possible to deliver a superior experience as
budgets are not endless.
We see more companies using advanced features to optimize their operational
costs in 2020. This is further accelerated by increased viewing times from people
staying at home due to the pandemic:
● Per Title Encoding
● Multi-Codec
● 3 Pass
Per-Title Encoding, Multi-Codec and 3 Pass has helped our customers to save up
to 80% of storage and CDN costs compared to their previous workflows!
8. No operational efficiency without measuring
Before we can even start to work on efficiency we need to identify the inefficient parts
● We see a lot of companies using an analytics solutions but not many that
can make effective use of the data
● Usually just parts of the workflow are tracked and metrics are not correlated
across systems
● Metrics that are in use are usually very basic and we are not going deep enough
● Typically systems don't work in realtime and data will be analyzed
afterwards if even
In 2020 we saw more companies starting to make use of this data and integrating it
into their day to day workflows to improve on a continuous basis
9. "Delivering high-quality, high definition video
to mobile is a key part of our commitment to
providing users with the best customer
experience possible where they are and any
device of their choice. Bitmovin’s encoding
will allow us to redefine expectations for
quality content in the markets we serve."
Emmanuel Frenehard
Chief Technology Officer at iflix
iflix uses Bitmovin’s
Per-Title Encoding solution.
Per-title encoding enables iflix to deliver
videos in the highest quality while saving
CDN costs through reduced bitrates of the
per-title encodings.
10. Quality of Experience
End-to-end experience that viewers receive from the initial
login, browsing, searching, viewing and support for high-quality
video on a wide range of devices.

12. Increased pressure on the viewer experience
Press and viewer feedback can permanently damage any brand
13. Value added features are on the rise
Companies will adapt this feature to enrich the user experience
○ Dolby Vision and other High Dynamic Range (HDR) formats
○ Offline playback
○ 4K and soon 8K
○ Advanced audio - e.g., Dolby and DTS
Companies that are agile enough to adapt new features quickly will be the
winners of 2020 in terms of viewer experience

18. Streaming video consumption is increasing
Viewers are watching more
and are watching longer, and
thus data use is even growing
faster!
19. Impact on performance
Quality of service metrics suggest that video services can still cope
with the increase in load but see bandwidth related pressures
20. Adjust, optimize and deliver
This dramatic increase in streaming video consumption did not break
the internet. However, there is public pressure directed at content
distributors to lower bandwidth consumption while still delivering a
high-quality experience for their viewers.
1. Look at bitrates - Adapt the bitrates of the video files to
a viewers’ bandwidth & device conditions
2. Look at multi-codec support - Compressed video files = high-quality
content using same networks

22. Device fragmentation will continue to grow
● More than 63,000
device profiles are in
use by the top 80,000
websites. Over time
this has grown at
almost 20% per year
● Devices are coming
to market on a 6
months basis
23. Device fragmentation will continue to grow
● Most developers want to
make sure their efforts
ensure a good experience
on 95% of devices. But
reaching 95% of devices gets
harder and harder over time
● Companies that don't have
processes in place that allow
them to adapt and onboard
new devices quickly will
miss the train
24. Device fragmentation will continue to grow
More Resources:
● Blog Post: Delivering high quality video with HTML5,
Android, iOS & Smart TV SDKs
● Datasheet: Mobile SDK
It’s not a one off project! The video market is shifting quickly and it will
continue to do so
Only companies that are flexible enough to adapt continue to deliver superior
viewer experiences in 2020 and beyond will be able to reach new devices
quickly
25. Benefits of working with Bitmovin:

28. Summary
● Old and new services are “rushing” to market and “battling”
for eyeballs and subscribers.
● Viewers expect immediate turnaround time for new content.
Faster Time to Market
Therefore, broadcasters need...
● Ability to quickly launch new OTT services that support a
wide variety of platforms in extremely tight timelines.
● Efficient end-to-end workflows (for on demand or live)
with the ability to quickly publish entirely new libraries
with push of a button.
29. News, shows and critical events need to be online as soon as possible to
monetize content in the most effective way
● Fast encoding offers near instant turnaround time in the highest quality
● Cloud based workflows that can scale horizontally
● Hybrid cloud workflows that allow to “burst” jobs when on-premise or
fixed infra exceeds capacity
2020 is the year of no more waiting and companies will get better in bringing
content online in an efficient and fast way
Turnaround time is important
30. The media market is very dynamic, new formats, codecs,
devices appear quickly and on a faster basis
● Software eats the world! Cloud
and software based workflows are
getting more traction
● Agility is key for the video market to
support new formats and devices quickly
In 2020 we see companies getting really good
at that and new devices come out and
these companies adapt quickly
It's not IF you support a device, but WHEN!
31. ● Make informed technology decisions with guidance from experts with
experience based on successful deployments across different markets
and regions
● Expert personnel of full‐stack developers with strong video technology
background focused on helping launch your service faster by sharing
experience and industry/learned best practices
● Focused support model to assist with high visibility projects

32. Accelerated Delivery: The time it takes
assets, including live clips, to be
processed, encoded and published on
the website was reduced by as much as
half while the ability to parallel encode
assets increased from one to 20+. The
automation, speed and cost efficiency
delivered by Dalet and Bitmovin
enabled a reduced NRL digital team to
continue operating during the
COVID-19 quarantine.
