“My life story is filled with wonderful connections to amazing people, but I lose contact with too many. The energy created by friendships and the brain happiness of those connections fade to a fine silk thread that ....
that becomes thinner overtime until – without my knowing – it frays to nothing and the connection is lost altogether. At some moment, when I realize that disconnect, I go through a soft mourning of the loss.
In steps Facebook.
I fought Facebook for awhile, but then I realized that all the younger members of my extended family knew about each others happenings and were "connected", from Edmonton, to Provo to Rhode Island to San Diego. I gave in and joined.
It wasn't a comfortable fit at first. I found it difficult to find my way around, as I do with all technology. Being a non-native / immigrant its uncomfortable at times, and I don't always feel I fit. What I did find was that I was able to connect with my SONS! That was a big bonus.
The part I love most is that it has become that fine silk thread again. I have a small connection to friends of the past, friends at a distance, friends of my children, family far away.

It’s all about the connections we make with others!
A recent article in Scientific American Mind discusses the benefits and potential dangers of using social media tools such as Facebook or Twitter.
The gist of the current research shows that if a person is socially competent/healthy/well and uses social media to augment their relationships, then the results can be very positive. But for those people who struggle to maintain their social well-being using social media as a replacement for healthy relationships can be detrimental – increasing depression and anxiety.
I want to give you some ideas on how to use Facebook sensibly.
I can’t claim that I use Facebook perfectly, and have the epitome of a balanced life,
but I want to share some small steps towards letting it be a positive influence in your life.
How can I use Facebook to improve my connection with others?
