an interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary field that
applies the practices, perspectives, and tools

5. The first American school for library science was
founded by Melvil Dewey at Columbia University
in 1887.
Owing to the initiative taken
by Sayaji Rao Gaekwad II, the ruler of the
erstwhile Baroda State W.A Borden a disciple of
Dewey initiated training in librarianship in India in
1911 at Baroda.
After partition, the first school of Library Science
was opened in University of Madras in the year
1929 in collaboration with the Madras Library
Association.
