6. A PERIOD OF TECTONIC SHIFT
“Our strong TALENTS and DESIRES for group effort
have been filtered through relatively rigid institutional
structures because of the complexity of managing
groups. We haven’t had all the groups we’ve wanted,
we’ve simply had all the groups we could afford.”
Clay Shirky
7. A PERIOD OF TECTONIC SHIFT
“Most of the barriers to GROUP ACTION have
collapsed, and without those barriers, we are free to
explore new ways of gathering together and getting
things done.”
Clay Shirky
Growth mindset in which work is the core driver of success.
With digital media the world has truly become flat.
Blend our desires and talents with the need for communal exchange through technology things become to take another dimension
Some of us still look for institutional backup for professional development. Is it the only way to go nowadays with all the connectivity we have and digital possibilities? NO. Now, we have the chance to develop our own PLEs and PLNs - Personal Learning Environments and Personal Learning Networks through digital media that has given us inifinite possibilities of connections. You can extend your own education through a self-structured and self-organized learning environment.
You, we are capable of self-assemble. The technological tools we have at our disposal are simply ways of channeling our existing motivation, talents, passions.
We need to be ready to deal with and endure some levels of ambiguityOur problem is that we don’t want to live with uncertainty, risk and exposure to criticismIf we want to move on and innovate, we need to be ready to be exposed to judgement and risk of loss
Let me tell you a story. We were geographically based in 6 different branches, more than 200 hundred EFL teachers. We only shared over coffee time, in between classes. At that time, as Clay Shirky mentions “Prior to Social media era, the alternative to institutional action was usually no action”
If you have an Internet connection, the communal-creative world has been flattened and woven together in ways that weren’t possible even three years ago.

How many of you are in FB? How many of you are in FB groups to enhance your professional development? How many of you are in twitter? In twitter and FB do you follow just friends or do you follow like-minded professionals who tweet and post tips for the classroom, interesting resources and educational links? In one way or the other, you are already there, but are you using social media to connect and power up your classroom practice?
