1. Quit Smoking Cold Turkey
This is an excellent way to quit for one reason, because it is very difficult.
Most people who leave smoking behind via cold turkey never return because they
felt themselves getting stronger as they stopped so they have a very accurate
reading (from personal experience) on how weak smoking makes you. And also
because quitting this way was very difficult (especially in the first week) so
they never want to go through it again.
The phrase "cold turkey" originated in hospitals when heroin withdrawal was
first being witnessed by doctors and nurses, as the body goes through withdrawal
it protects itself by drawing the blood closer to the internal organs. This
leaves the skin cold and bumpy, like a plucked turkey.
Below I have laid out some of the best things you can do to cope with the mental
and physical challenges of stopping smoking in this way.
Master Of Your Own Time
This one's very important. You should make sure the first 4 to 7 days of
quitting cold turkey are when you have time of from work, school, university or
anything that's going to annoy you. This includes annoying people.
When you begin to experience withdrawal symptoms and they begin to get stronger
you don't want to be within 100 miles of anything that usually annoys you,
because the things that usually annoy you will distort through the lens of the
withdrawal symptoms and become really annoying.
Usually when the person trying to quit finds themselves getting really annoyed
they go back to smoking telling themselves something like "I'll just have this 1
to level me out" which is no use. Getting your timing right and making sure you
have at least 4 days of peace and quiet is going to be a massive help.
Sweat It Out
Starting yourself on a light exercise programme is an excellent thing to do when
you quit cold turkey, as the smoke and nicotine fades from your system you are
going to notice a rise in extra energy. This is the reason why people report
feeling twitchy and restless when they quit and not knowing what to do with
themselves, this part of quitting can easily be flipped into a positive by
starting a little light exercise every second day for between 45 minutes to 1
hour.
The first benefit of this is that using up the extra, fidgety energy will allow
you to feel more levelled for the rest of the day, you will still experience
cravings but they won't be making you feel like jumping out of your own skin so
much, because your body will be relaxed after exercising.
The second benefit is that every time you exercise and sweat you will be
speeding up the process of the nicotine leaving your body. And the third is that
you will feel fitter and your overall fitness level will increase very fast
because of your body being released from the tar and nicotine.
Thats Entertainment
This method is fairly basic and most people reading this will think of it
themselves anyway but it's still worth mentioning. All you need to do is sit
down and have a think about some of your favourite pieces of entertainment,
these can consist of music, movies, books or anything that you can let your mind
wander into and enjoy. This will be extra helpful if you have been lucky enough
to grab the 4 to 7 days to yourself we mentioned at the start, and since you are
trying so hard to quit you deserve and need a few enjoyable distractions.
So that's cold turkey, it's basically all down to your own stubbornness on this
one and how much you want to stop, but once you have gone through the difficult

beginning you will be very unlikely to go back to smoking again. And it's always
good to know you can achieve something that other people can't.
