3. R 소프트웨어의 역사
 What is R?
 R is a dialect of the S language.
 R started in the early 1990's as a project by Ross Ihaka
and Robert Gentleman at the University of Auckland, New
Zealand, intended to provide a statistical environment in
their teaching lab.

 What is S?
 S is a language that was developed in 1976 by John
Chambers and others at Bell Labs.
 S was initiated as an internal statistical analysis
environment - originally implemented as Fortran libraries,
then in C.
 A commercial implementation of the S language, under the
product name S-PLUS, is available, and has built a number
of fancy features (GUIs, mostly) on top of it - hence
the PLUS".
