even if I’m the only one
who gets inworld!
• Plenty of material to cover, but we first want to get as
many people inworld as possible
• How many of you searched for “using virtual worlds in
education” before coming?

What are Virtual Worlds?
• Immersive/Virtual Learning Environments
• Minecraft? Sort of. World of Warcraft? Closer.
• Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games or
MMORPGs, Games-Based Learning on steroids
• Focus: Second Life but especially OpenSimulator
6
9. Using Virtual Worlds
Do you want Second Life?
• Around since 2003, many
(schools) still use it
• In its heyday, was the ultimate
online community
• Might be resurrected with rise
of virtual reality
• If your kids are 16 and up, they
can go inworld
• If time permits today, we’ll pay
a visit (new/existing avatars)

• Around since 2007, best option
for K-12 schools
• Favorite of control freaks,
cheapskates, etc.
• Offers the vital stuff: CAD,
programming, virtual field trips
• Still no marketplace or even
common currency (yet!)
• Serious business, military and
other training purposes
• Will get to Version 1.0 soon!

much easier VW admin
