2. • Many may wonder why I choose an obscure & less popular
subject like this. Actually it was a protest from my side to
reduce the World Cup to a 10 teams' event. I've tried to prove
that there are many interesting facts, stories & records in
associate cricket too. I wanted to share few of those with you
to make you also aware of it. Don't know whether you liked it
or not. But thanks a lot for your participation. Waiting for
your important feedbacks friends just like Sikandar Raza had
about the 2019 ICC World Cup in England!!!
•
3. • 1.It was one of the host cities for the 2018 ICC
World Cup Qualifiers. The ground where Nepal
played against the Netherlands in the 7th place play
off match on 17th March,2018 in the picture, is also
named after the city. Popular belief states that the
city is named after the croaking noise made by the
nearby river's frogs. Just id the host city.
5. • 2.Zimbabwe became an ICC member in 1981. They enlisted
their names for the 1982 ICC Trophy (World Cup Qualifiers) in
England to get a chance to qualify for the 1983 World Cup.
But few weeks before the ICC Trophy, they could be found
easily outside Barbours Department Store in downtown
Harare along with their wives instead of practicing hard in the
ground. What was reason for that?
(in pic - Zimbabwe team during the 1982 ICC Trophy)
6. Ans - They were selling home made cakes,
prepared by their wives to raise money for
travelling expenses to England to play &
pay the tournament's participation fee!!!
7. • 3. Normally the ICC Trophy finals were
played in different low profile grounds.
But the 2001 ICC Trophy final involving
Namibia & The Netherlands (in pic
Dutch captain Roland Lefebvre receiving
the winner's trophy) on July 15, 2001
was played on a ground (in pic) which
was a regular host of a famous trophy in
the 1990s. Id the ground/city & the
trophy.
8. Ans – Toronto Cricket, Skating and
Curling Club…Sahara Cup.
9. • 4.Sri Lanka won the first ever
ICC Trophy defeating Canada
on June 21st,1979 in
Worcester ( in pic - SL captain
Anura Tenekkon after winning
the trophy). But they played
their Semifinal against
Denmark on June 6th. What
was the reason for this long
gap between the semis & the
final?
10. Ans - In between they were
participating in 1979 ICC World Cup
(main event).
11. • 5. Namibia beat Denmark by 41
runs in the final to win the 'Plate
Competition' (a tournament for the
teams who were eliminated from
the group stage), named Philip
Snow Trophy on March 1,1994 in
Nairobi, thanks to a brilliant all
round performance (a century &
three wickets) by Gavin
Murgatroyd (in pic) of Namibia.
However these two teams weren't
supposed to play the final as USA &
Papua New Guinea actually
qualified. Why did Denmark &
Namibia play the final instead of
USA & PNG?
12. Ans - They thought they wouldn't
qualify for the final & had booked their
flight tickets before. But when they
qualified, they had to take the flight to
return back before the match.
13. • 6.X (in pics) is a national cricket team who became ICC's
member on 2002. Before that they were a part of West Africa
cricket team which consisted of Ghana,Gambia,Nigeria & X.
West Africa participated in 1982,1994,1997 ICC Trophies.
They were supposed to play the 2001 edition in Canada too.
But Canada government didn’t grant visas to the players of X.
They thought X's players would stay in Canada illegally after
the tournament. So in protest the entire West Africa team
withdrew from the tournament. Id X.
15. • 7. X & Y were supposed to play an ICC Trophy
match on June 4th, 1979 at Kenilworth Cricket Club
Ground, Warwick Road. But during the match day, Y
had to play a friendly match against the host cricket
club (in pic - players of Kenilworth Club's cricketers
posing before the match) instead of the scheduled
ICC Trophy's match. Who are X & Y & why did this
situation arise?
16. Ans - Sri Lanka refused to play
against Israel due to political
reasons. So the Israeli team played
against the local club Kenilworth.
17. • 8. Windies skipper Jason Holder remained not out on
99 while chasing 200, made by Papua New Guinea at
Harare in the ICC World Cup Qualifiers, 2018. He
became the 10th batsmen in ODI to achieve this
unfortunate feat. The 9th batsman, X also achieved this
in an ICC World Cup Qualifier match. X registered this in
the 2014, ICC World Cup Qualifiers' final against
Scotland at Lincoln on February 1st (in pic). Who is X &
why his knock is unique?
18. Ans - Swapnil Patil...he scored the 99*
on his ODI debut & become the only
cricketer to do so.
19. • 9. This team had participated in the
1979 ICC Trophy & thus become the
only non ICC member to feature in
any ICC event. They played
brilliantly throughout the
tournament under the captaincy of
Billy Slade (in pic) but lost out on a
Semi-final spot to Sri Lanka due to
their superior run rate. Recently
few delegates of this country have
shown their interests to make it an
ICC member nation. But nothing
has been finalized yet. Just id this
country.
20. Ans - Wales is the ans....they are part
of the ECB.
21. • 10. On 8th March,2018 at Harare, The Netherlands had to
face the UAE in an ICC World Cup Qualifier match. But before
the beginning of the match, people who are following the
event was talking about a match, played between these same
two sides some 22 years back in the 1996 World Cup in
Lahore as these two cricketers in pics (Shahzad Altaf & Tim de
Leede) played for the UAE & the Netherlands respectively.
Why did their participation in that 96 World Cup match
become a subject to discuss before the UAE-Netherlands
match in this World Cup Qualifiers?
22. Ans - Their sons Rameez Shahzad &
Bas de Leede were in the respective
teams...though Bas wasn't picked for
the playing XI in that match.
23. • 11. JC Jacobsen, a Danish
founded the company on
1847 in Valby on the outskirts
of Copenhagen & named the
company after his son (in pic).
The company was the title
sponsor of the 1997 ICC
Trophy in Malaysia & the
trophy was named it. Just id
this company.
25. • 12. Lenni Louw (in pic) was part
of the Namibia's 15 men squad
for the 2003 ICC World Cup. He
had played a single match
against Zimbabwe in that
tournament & took the wicket of
Mark Vermulen. Namibia
qualified for the World Cup
thanks to their brilliant
performances in the 2001 ICC
Trophy in Canada where they
were seeded 10th. But amazed
everyone to finish second. Lenni
Louw was there too throughout
the tournament. But wasn't
technically eligible to play. What
was the reason for that?
27. • 13. On 5th July, 1982 at Wellesbourne, Israel had to
face the Canadians for their last match of the ICC
Trophy. But a dispute occurred between the Israeli
players & management before the match. So the
players didn't play the match & gave a walkover to
their opponents. However if the problems would
have been sorted at the last moment, yet it might
not be possible to play the match. What was the
reason for this?
28. Ans - Israeli team had issues with team
management. So few cricketers left
England before the match. So they
might not be able to field a XI side
team.
29. • 14. This award was presented
originally at the University of
Cambridge as a kind of booby
prize awarded by the students to
the man who achieved the lowest
exam marks but still earned a
third-class degree in the
Mathematical Tripos (in pic - the
last recipient of the award). Later
the award became popular in
sporting events also. The 1994 ICC
Trophy also had this 'special'
trophy which was won by
Gibraltar by finishing last among
the twenty participating nations.
Just id this award.
31. • 15. This match had to be
abandoned due to a protest
from a Islamic group of 500
people on the field. The
demonstrators, most hiding
behind masks, began
menacing the Dutch team and
set fire to the Carlsberg
advertising billboards. All this
happened due to sudden
swipe of venues. What was
their reason for this protest?
32. Ans - the demonstrators were there to
protest against the Israeli team.
Actually Israel had to play against
Gibraltar on the ground. But the
organizers assuming the protest
swiped the venues of the matches.
The protesters reached the ground &
considered the Dutch as the Israelis.
33. • 16. They were the first team to
announce the 15 men's squad for
the 2001 ICC Trophy in Canada
which included South Australian
allrounder Joe Scuderi (in pic),
also the current coach of the
team. But ICC had questioned
about his eligibility to represent
the nation & declined his
inclusion in the team. In protest
the team withdrew from the
tournament. Id the national team.
35. • 17. Hong Kong played against Papua New Guinea on
17/03/18 at Harare in an ICC World Cup Qualifier
match. It was a landmark ODI & also 4th in the
series. All the 4 matches are here in the list. What is

17…(images in next slide)
38. • 18. Bangladesh won the 1997 ICC
Trophy in Malaysia beating Kenya
on 12 & 13 April at Kuala Lumpur.
Both the team along with
Scotland who finished 3rd
defeating Ireland qualified for the
1999 World Cup in England.
However all the four semi finalists
plus Canada qualified for an
another tournament as this
tournament was being played as
the qualifier for that tournament
also. It means the 1997 ICC Trophy
was the qualifying tournament for
two separate trophies. If one of
them is 1999 ICC World Cup
Cricket. Which is the other one?
39. Ans - Cricket at the 1998
Commonwealth Games in Malaysia.
40. • 19. Flavian Aponso was selected for the
Netherlands team in the 1990 ICC Trophy. But his
selection was very strange as he was barred from
participating in any top grade cricket due to his
'crime'. His selection in an ICC event might create a
massive controversy as the other accused people
could also demand their opportunities. What was
Flavian Aponso's 'crime'?
41. Ans - He was a part of the Sri Lanka's rebel
tour to South Africa in 1981-82. All of the
squad members were banned for life by Sri
Lankan cricket board & ICC.
42. • 20. This happened for the first time ever in a
cricket tournament at the 1997 ICC Trophy in
Malaysia. You can see (in the pic) the
technology is being used at the ground in a
match from that tournament. Now a days it
has become a common feature in all
international & maximum domestic matches.
What is happening here for the very first
time?
43. Ans - First 'ball by ball update' in
internet. Cricinfo provided this.
44. • 21. This team were eliminated from the first
round of each & every ICC Trophies (World
Cup Qualifier). Yet they somehow managed to
play a ICC Cricket World Cup. Id the team &
tell how did they participate in that event?
45. Ans – East Africa. They were invited by
ICC to play the 1975 World Cup.
46. • 22. X & Y were the members of the West
Indies's 1979 World Cup winning squad. 18
years later X (in right) was leading the USA
team in the 1997 ICC Trophy & Y's brother
Dereck (in left) was playing under his
captaincy. Id X & Y.
47. Ans – X = Faoud Bachhus &
Y = Alvin Kallicharran
48. • 23. The man from Gibraltar in the picture scored a
compact 98 against Singapore in the 1994 ICC Trophy in
Kenya. But his knock wasn't enough as Singapore won
the match by 4 wickets. However he achieved his
moment of glory in the sporting field three years back
at Hawthrons which had led his team to a remarkable
victory & put his name in the history forever. Who is he

Afghanistan & Ireland didn't participate in this Qualifier
Trophy. But yet they played the World Cup 2015. They
didn't get Test status at that time also. Then how did
they participate in that World Cup?
51. Ans - They claimed the top two spots of ICC
World Cricket League, a home & away
based league (ODI/List-A) for the leading
associates.
52. • 25. Zimbabwe were playing against Scotland in the
last match of their group league at Queen's Sports
Club, Bulawayo on 12th March in the 2018 ICC
World Cup Qualifier. But during middle of the
Zimbabwe innings, suddenly Zimbabwean fans all
around the world started to follow the twitter
account of Merna Cremer (in pic), wife of Zimbabwe
captain Grame Cremer. For a while she became a
mini celebrity. What was the reason for that?
53. Ans - She was providing live match update from the
ground & was the sole source of live score for quite
some time. A power cut happened in the Stadium so
even cricinfo couldn't provide the live score. The
match wasn't televised either.
54. • 26. Afghanistan was playing their
first ever ICC Trophy match against
Denmark on 1st April, 2009 in
South Africa. Denmark scored
204/9 in their allotted 50 overs.
Karim Khan Sadiq was the most
successful bowler for Afghanistan
in this match. He took 27/4 in 8
overs. However he might not bowl
at all if he didn't injure his hand
during 17th over of the Danish
innings. So he the injury proved
lucky for him. Why did he may not
bowl if they injury wouldn't
happen?
55. Ans - He was the designated wicket-keeper
for the match...an injury in his hand during
the match forced him to remove his wicket-
keeping gloves...he then tried his luck
bowling few overs & finished with 4
wickets.
56. • 27. This is ground is the most influential ground in
Kenya & was one of the main venue for the 1994 ICC
Trophy. This is the ground where Kenya defeated Sri
Lanka in the historic World Cup 2003 match. The land
of the ground was donated by Suleman Verjee family at
a time when no recreational facilities of scale were
available to Indians in Kenya. A cricket ground in India
shares the same name with this ground. And that
ground too hosted a historic match. Name the ground
& which was the historic match in India?
57. Ans - Nairobi Gymkhana. Bombay
Gymkhana hosted India's first ever Test
match on Indian soil.
58. • 28. X (in the pic) became part of a historic feat
in the recently concluded World Cup
Qualifiers, 2018. Id X & tell about that record.
59. Ans – X = Shai Hope of Windies. He was
the 100th victim of Rashid Khan. Taking his
wicket Rashid Khan become the fastest
bowler ever to take 100 wickets in ODI.
60. • 29. Hong Kong had finished last &
lost their ODI status in the 2018 ICC
World Cup Qualifiers. However they
were handicapped by the absence of
two of their main players. One of
them Mark Chapman now plays for
New Zealand. Jamie Atkinson, the
other one also didn't play the
tournament. He was the captain,
wicketkeeper & main pillar of their
batting in the last edition of the ICC
World Cup Qualifier in 2014. Why
did he not play in this competition?
61. Ans - He didn't get leave for two weeks
to play from his school where he
works as a teacher.
62. • 30. The ICC World Cup Qualifier, 2018 has been
successfully hosted by Zimbabwe. Though
Zimbabwe wasn't the first choice to stage the event.
In fact Zimbabwe's hosting right was announced as
late as October, 2017. Which country initially was
announced as the host of the event & what was the
reason to change it later?
63. Ans - Initially Bangladesh was the host
country. But they qualified automatically
for the World Cup through their ODI
ranking. So ICC then had changed the
venue & shifted it to Zimbabwe.
