13. The Problem (s)
with our science
The challenges facing our world and species
must be met with great science and
innovation but there are some problems….

world, only 0.2% are working on problems

to many of the worlds problems are not doing
a very good job….
18. The
Reasons
The blame for bad science cannot be laid
only at the door of individual scientists. The
problem is systemic…

20. 2. Incentives
Job security and funding availability in
science are highly dependent on publication
record. There are no rewards for negative
but accurate science
21. 3. Objectivity
The objectivity of scientists is inevitably
compromised by the systemic pressures to
publish and get funded.
22. 4. Guess Work
Data overload is a big problem. It is
impossible for researchers to ask the right
questions when there are so many
answers…

"This serves as a warning to other countries," said Professor James Thomson at the University of Toronto, who carried out the research. "I believe that this is the first real demonstration that pollination levels are getting worse. I believe it is a significant decline. I believe the pollination levels have dropped by as much as 50 per cent. "Bee numbers may have declined at our research site, but we suspect that a climate-driven mismatch between the times when flowers open and when bees emerge from hibernation is a more important factor." According to a previous study, England's bees are vanishing faster than anywhere else in Europe, with more than half of hives dying out over the last 20 years.

Why are there so few researcher and why is the science we do not very good?
Reason 1: We don’t spend enough trying to solve the problems that need to solved.
The incentives in science are brokenNeed to publish to get tenure, so pressure to publish more and more.
Corners get cut, cherry picking of results etc
Data overload is making it harder and harder to navigate results
