Oman has been investing heavily on infrastructure
development for quite some time with an aim to spur
economic growth, and it hasn't missed an opportunity to
upgrade existing facilities that can match the best in the world
and introduce novel concepts that will eventually bring more
business to the country. While the Sultanate is set to reap
benefits from some of the projects in 2015, it is busy sowing
the seeds of many other ambitious plans to ensure a
prosperous future.
Oman’s economy has been growing steadily and witnessing
a major transformation, in terms of social and economic
development, over the last 40 years. It is one of the fastest-
growing economies in the Gulf region, taking into account the
government‘s careful planning, calculated spending, and
investments in the non-oil sector.
Several multi-million dollar projects are currently
underway, which include gas-based industries, world-class
integrated tourism resorts, roads, airports, mega ports, oil and
gas development, sewage network and housing units.
Compared with the other GCC countries, the Sultanate
remains one of the most economically and politically stable
countries in the Middle East and has the second most
diversified economy after Bahrain.

Major Projects in OmanDevelopment of major Ports
The overall development of Oman’s seaports is one major step in the
process of diversification. The massive expansion work of Sohar port,
which was completed at a cost of around $130m, fructify the strategic
long-term plan of the sultanate to diversify its economy beyond oil and
gas sector. The government has invested roughly $1.7bn in the
development of Duqm. The Duqm project is a game changer for Oman’s
economy, and will allow the economy to develop into a more diversified
basket of activities.
Expansion of Airports
A major upgrade to the international airports, the entire project costing
around RO4.24bn, are under way. The two state-of-the-art airports,
Salalah International Airport and Muscat International Airport, are tipped
to boost tourism and air traffic. The first phase of the Muscat
International Airport was inaugurated in December 2014 when an Oman
Air Airbus A330 touched down on the new runway. The 65,000 square
metre-terminal at Salalah, which can accommodate one million
passengers annually, is touted as the best in the country.
National Railway Network
The first phase of the sultanate’s $15bn national railway network set to
cover 2244 km is due for completion in 2018. The rail network will link
Buraimi, bordering the UAE, to industrial city of Sohar and the port of
Salalah, and is seen as the region's future gateway to Africa.

Major Projects in OmanBuilding of Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre
The building of the $1bn Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre in Muscat will
boost the sultanate’s offering in the MICE segment. The state-of-the art structure,
located just four kilometers from the Muscat International Airport, will ensure a
meetings space to suit the most discerning conference and exhibition organisers
in the world. The centre will feature an elaborate lyric-style tiered auditorium to
seat 3,200 people while the exhibition halls will feature 22,000 square meters of
column-free exhibition space. The centre will also include an additional 450-seat
tiered theatre, 13 meeting rooms capable of seating 80-300 delegates, two well-
appointed ballrooms to seat up to 2,360, VIP Pavilion, a spacious food-court and
a multi-storey car park with capacity for 4,000 vehicles.
Public Transport Network
The Ministry of Transport and Communication will prepare a Public Transport
Master Plan in 2015 aimed at easing traffic in major road networks in the
Sultanate. The ambitious plan will improve public transport system, reduce car
use, integrate bus and rail transit systems and improve traffic safety. A Spanish
company, which advises Oman Government on developing an integrated public
transport network in Muscat, has suggested setting up of a Public Transport
Authority for defining an integrated public transport network and investing in
public transport infrastructure. (Source: Times of Oman)

A Record Budget for 2015
5% Economic Growth Budgeted
4.4% Increase in Expenditure
The 2015 budget comes amidst a strong reduction in global oil prices but a
commitment from the Oman Government that critical projects will remain on
track and that projects intended to diversify the economy, and stimulate
economic growth, will continue to be supported.
This includes continuing investment at Duqm, as well as commencement of
the Sohar – Al Buraimi section of the national railway project, and several
major road projects. The budget also provides for several significant tourism
projects, including a number of hotel developments and the Oman
Convention & Exhibition Centre, in Muscat. Falling interest rates are expected
to encourage investment activity. Falling global commodity prices are
expected to reduce inflation to 2.0% for 2015 (2014: 2.2%; 2013: 3.1%). It is
expected that real growth for 2014 will hit 4.4% and will increase to 5% in
2015. This includes a budgeted 5.5% growth in non-oil activities.
While taxes and fees have been used as one means to plug the gap caused
by falling oil and gas revenues, the Ministry of Finance acknowledges a
number of options to fund the deficit, namely privatisation of several State-
owned companies, through 2015 to 2017, and borrowings, including the
potential issue of Islamic bonds. (Source: Analysis of Oman's 2015 budget by KPMG)
