The Greek flag

The Greek flag has 5 blue and 4 white stripes
and a white cross. The five blue stripes stand
for the word Freedom ( e-le-fthe-ri-a), while
the four white stripes stand for the words or
death ( i tha- na –tos) . So our flag means
freedom or death.
Our National Hymn
The Greek Anthem is based on the "Hymn to the Freedom", a
large - 158 strophes - poem written by Dionysios Solomos, a
distinguished poet from Zakynthos Island. The poem was inspired
by the Greek Revolution of 1821 against the Ottoman Empire.
During 1828 the eminent musician from Kerkyra Island Nicolaos
Mantzaros composed the music for the Solomos' Hymn.

Christmas in Greece
We decorate Christmas trees
We make sweets called
“melomakarona” and
“kurabiedes”
                                               melomakarona
On the 24th of December, the
children go from house to
house singing carols and
people give them money and
sweets.
On the 1st of January Saint kourabiedes
Vasilios (the Greek Santa
Claus) brings sweets and gifts
to all children.
We cut the New Year’s cake
which contains a golden coin.
Whoever finds it is the lucky
one of the new year.

Easter in Greece
At Easter we dye eggs-red
and we make special bread
called “tsoureki”
On Good Friday we Red-eggs
mourn the death of Jesus
and we decorate the
epitaph in every church
(Jesus’ death bed) with
flowers.
On Easter Sunday we eat
lamb on the spit and we
celebrate the Resurrection
of Jesus.

A Greek recipe
         GREEK MOUSSAKA
 INGREDIENTS (8-10 servings)
            4 large eggplants
1 kg of lamb minced meat
               finely chopped
          1 small onion thinly
                       chopped
         2 cloves gillyflower
       1 tablespoon of black
            raisins (optional)
           1 clove cinnamon
         ½ tablespoon grated
                  orange peel
   2 tablespoons of olive oil
1 ½ cup olive oil for frying
               1 teaspoon salt
Mousaka (topping)
For the topping (option A)
2 tablespoons butter
3 – 4 tablespoons flour
2 cups fresh milk
2 egg yolks
2 tablespoons grated cheese
½ teaspoon ground nutmeg

For the topping (option B)
½ kg non sour yoghurt
3 well beaten eggs
1 tablespoon flour
Salt
Pepper
Nutmeg (optional)
Mousaka method
METHOD
Cut the eggplants into slices and put them in salted water for 1 hour approximately.
Remove eggplants from water and squeeze them so they drain the excess water.
Heat olive oil in a deep frying pan with heavy bottom and fry the eggplants until soften
without getting brown. Arrange them on a kitchen towel paper to absorb the excess olive
oil.
In a clean frying pan heat olive oil and sizzle the onion until it golden browns without
getting burned. Add minced meat, stir constantly, add all spices, grated orange peel and
raisins- provided that you use them- along with a bit of salt. Cook 4 – 5 minutes until all
fluids are absorbed.
Arrange eggplant slices on a medium size baking dish, sprinkle minced meat and
continue with another layer of eggplants.
Prepare béchamel sauce as follows: In a small saucepan melt butter, remove from the
heat and add flour, stirring constantly with a wooden ladle till the mixture thickens. When
the mush cools, add the beaten egg yolks. Add cold milk and place the saucepan in the
heat, in low temperature, stirring constantly till it becomes a thick and homogeneous
sauce. Sprinkle cheese and add a touch of salt and nutmeg and spoon the sauce over
all.
Bake for 25-30 minutes in a preheated 180 degrees oven until the sauce golden browns.
Served warm.
Some Greek words

Thank you = Ευχαριστώ (efharist’o)
Goodbye = γεια σου = (ad’io)

Rhodes island
Now come with us to our town

Rhodes is an island at the south-east of Greece.

Rodos town is at the northern part of Rhodes
island

The city was founded in 408 BC and Rodos was
one of the most beautiful cities of that period.

Colossus
Colossus of Rhodes , large statue of Helios, the sun
god, destroyed by an earthquake in antiquity.
Consider one of the Seven Wonders of the World by
the ancients, it was built in part by Chares of Lindus
(Rhodes) between 292 and 280 B.C. Its bronze was
taken from the machines and tools left behind by
Demetrius I after his unsuccessful siege of Rhodes.
According to legend, the 100 ft (30.5 m) statue stood
astride the harbor and ships passed between its legs.
In reality, it stood on a promontory overlooking the
harbor, and the representational type is well known
from images on coins of the same period.
In 1309 the Knights of Saint John conquered
Rhodes and they built strong fortifications,
           transforming it into a
         multinational medieval city

  • 4. Our National Hymn The Greek Anthem is based on the "Hymn to the Freedom", a large - 158 strophes - poem written by Dionysios Solomos, a distinguished poet from Zakynthos Island. The poem was inspired by the Greek Revolution of 1821 against the Ottoman Empire. During 1828 the eminent musician from Kerkyra Island Nicolaos Mantzaros composed the music for the Solomos' Hymn. Ύμνος πρός την Hymn to the Freedom Ελευθερίαν Σε γνωρίζω απο την Ι recognize you κόψη του σπαθιού την by the dreadful edge τρομερή σε γνωρίζω of Your sword. απο την όψη που με βιά I recognize Your face, μετράει τη γή forcibly staring at the land. • 7. A Greek recipe GREEK MOUSSAKA  INGREDIENTS (8-10 servings) 4 large eggplants 1 kg of lamb minced meat finely chopped 1 small onion thinly chopped 2 cloves gillyflower 1 tablespoon of black raisins (optional) 1 clove cinnamon ½ tablespoon grated orange peel 2 tablespoons of olive oil 1 ½ cup olive oil for frying 1 teaspoon salt
  • 8. Mousaka (topping) For the topping (option A) 2 tablespoons butter 3 – 4 tablespoons flour 2 cups fresh milk 2 egg yolks 2 tablespoons grated cheese ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg For the topping (option B) ½ kg non sour yoghurt 3 well beaten eggs 1 tablespoon flour Salt Pepper Nutmeg (optional)
  • 9. Mousaka method METHOD Cut the eggplants into slices and put them in salted water for 1 hour approximately. Remove eggplants from water and squeeze them so they drain the excess water. Heat olive oil in a deep frying pan with heavy bottom and fry the eggplants until soften without getting brown. Arrange them on a kitchen towel paper to absorb the excess olive oil. In a clean frying pan heat olive oil and sizzle the onion until it golden browns without getting burned. Add minced meat, stir constantly, add all spices, grated orange peel and raisins- provided that you use them- along with a bit of salt. Cook 4 – 5 minutes until all fluids are absorbed. Arrange eggplant slices on a medium size baking dish, sprinkle minced meat and continue with another layer of eggplants. Prepare béchamel sauce as follows: In a small saucepan melt butter, remove from the heat and add flour, stirring constantly with a wooden ladle till the mixture thickens. When the mush cools, add the beaten egg yolks. Add cold milk and place the saucepan in the heat, in low temperature, stirring constantly till it becomes a thick and homogeneous sauce. Sprinkle cheese and add a touch of salt and nutmeg and spoon the sauce over all. Bake for 25-30 minutes in a preheated 180 degrees oven until the sauce golden browns. Served warm.

Consider one of the Seven Wonders of the World by the ancients, it was built in part by Chares of Lindus (Rhodes) between 292 and 280 B.C. Its bronze was taken from the machines and tools left behind by Demetrius I after his unsuccessful siege of Rhodes.
