1. Holidays and Celebrations Recipes
Food is always at the center of every holiday and celebration around
the world. Since ancient times, it’s been part of ritual offerings,
thanksgiving for a bountiful harvest, and gatherings. Such is the
importance of food and its power to unite people that our holidays
and feasts revolve around them.
Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve festivities, for example, would not
be complete without a special dinner amongst family, relatives, and
friends, some of whom would only see each other at these times.
Likewise, the absence of food is observed during Ramadan and
minimal food items during Lent. But when the evening meal (iftar)
during Ramadan and Easter Sunday come around, there would be
food to nourish the pious.
These celebratory foods become ingrained in us as family traditions.
We partake of them as children and as we grow up to take the place
of our elders, it is what we serve as well. Meals during holidays and
celebrations take on several meanings and functions. Foremost is to
celebrate (and express gratitude) for one’s blessings and bounty, to
commemorate people and events, to wish for and welcome good luck
and good health, and to simply have fun.
Here are some of the world’s shared holidays and celebrations
including the symbolic and traditional foods associated with them:
Birthdays
Birthdays celebrate the personal, particularly to express gratitude for
the blessings received the past years, to welcome further good fortune,
2. and to express joy in having been born. We share our birthdays with the
people we love over cakes, ice cream, noodles, pies, and wine.
Weddings
Weddings unite couples for a life together. A feast is in order to
welcome the couple into their new status. Most often, whether in Italy,
China, or England, there would be roast suckling pig or roast lamb at
the heart of the dining table. All other dishes, from pasta, rice, fish and
seafood, vegetables, cheese, bread and wines are served alongside
the roasts. The wedding cake ties up the whole celebration.
Independence Day and Foundation Day
Many countries of the world celebrate an Independence Day or a
Foundation Day. This patriotic holiday is all about historical triumphs
and settlements as much as it is also a venue to spread the tables with
barbecues, salads, cakes. Fireworks optional but appreciated.
Christmas and New Year
The most colorful holiday season, in most parts of the world, would be
Christmas and New Year. Celebrated in December and January,
families and friends gather around an impressive holiday menu of
roasts, stews, gingerbread, fruitcake, cookies, eggnog, rice cakes, and
more.
