BLOCKCHAIN - OVERVIEW
A blockchain is a type of distributed ledger, comprised of unchangeable, digitally recorded data
in packages called blocks.
A novel solution accomplishes this without any trusted central authority: maintenance of the
blockchain is performed by a network of communicating nodes running bitcoin software.
Transactions of the form payer X sends Y bitcoins to payee Z are broadcast to this network using
readily available software applications.
Network nodes can validate transactions, add them to their copy of the ledger, and then
broadcast these ledger additions to other nodes.
The blockchain is a distributed database – to achieve independent verification of the chain of
ownership of any and every bitcoin (amount), each network node stores its own copy of the
blockchain.
Approximately six times per hour, a new group of accepted transactions, a block, is created,
added to the blockchain, and quickly published to all nodes.
This allows bitcoin software to determine when a particular bitcoin amount has been spent,
which is necessary in order to prevent double-spending in an environment without central
oversight.
Whereas a conventional ledger records the transfers of actual bills or promissory notes that
exist apart from it, the blockchain is the only place that bitcoins can be said to exist in the form
of unspent outputs of transactions.
Blockchain, the technology behind bitcoin could profoundly alter the way banks do business
worldwide, lowering their operating costs and making financial services securer and more
accessible, a World Economic Forum report finds Technology could lead to lower fees for
consumers, better regulatory oversight and better preparedness against financial bubbles, but
impact is likely to be mostly limited to the back-end of banking operations, with major
disruption through innovations such as bitcoin less likely to transform the industry

PATENT SEARCH STRATEGY
Using PatSeer, we searched individual publications and then collapsed them to one member per
Family (Simple Families). Patent families are a group of one or more patent applications in multiple
countries which represent the same invention.
The publications included in the report are updated as of 30th
Jan 2017.
 We started with a set of 2015 records (unique families)
 We browsed through some records to remove all the records relating to chemical
combinations
 We flagged/rated each individual record using Search Recall™ option present in PatSeer
 We then filtered, analyzed and came across some unwanted terms/Keywords
 These records were then removed from the project
NOTE: All analysis in this report has been done on Simple Family (one member per family) and
so the data in the charts should be construed accordingly.

TECHNOLOGY LANDSCAPE FOR BLOCKCHAIN
The landscape map below represents key concepts for different companies across generated
across title, abstract and claims. Themes are collection of prominent topics extracted from the
patent data and grouped under relevant parent tags.
Clusters for Signature, Public Key, Private Key and Card Purchase Structure are close to each
other as there is high degree of relevance between the records present in those types of
methods.
How we did it?
The VizMAP tool in PatSeer Pro was used for this analysis. First the clusters were generated on title, abstract
and claims using the Advanced Clustering option. Once the clusters were generated these were loaded
using the Landscape mode and then the themes were colored by assignee.

CORRELATION MAP FOR TOP COMPANIES ACROSS
DIFFERENT THEMES
In the map, each company is connected to particular application area through links whose
thickness and color intensity is directly proportional to the number of records relating them. The
number next to each line represents the number of records for various companies present in a
particular technology area.
It can be seen that Bank of America focuses more on Cards, Purchase and Structures. Most of
the top companies focus on Signature, Public Key and Private Key.
How we did it?
The co-relation mode within VizMAP was used to correlate already generated clusters (themes) with top
assignees. The resulting map was downloaded as an image.

INVENTOR GROUPS OF KEY COMPANIES IN
BLOCKCHAIN
The generated map below highlight the key inventor groups of companies. In map below the
groups are created using network relationships and the records are positioned on the map
based on their relationship to the Assignee (Pink dots) and to the inventors listed on the graph.
Also groups of inventors who file together will appear clustered together.
How we did it?
Using the VizMAP tool, patents of custom defined companies were loaded from the option in the network
mode. These were then expanded by their respective inventor names. The VizShade option was used to
shade the inventors and assignees with potential overlapping patents between them. Color by Assignees
option was used to differentiate records for different assignees

CITATIONS FOR BITCOIN
Bitcoin is a decentralized digital currency that enables instant payments to anyone, anywhere in
the world. Bitcoin uses peer-to-peer technology to operate with no central authority:
transaction management and money issuance are carried out collectively by the network. The
blockchain format was first used for bitcoin, as a solution to the problem of making a database
both secure and not requiring a trusted administrator.
The citation map below represents backward (g-1) and forward (g+1) citation set for bitcoin and
the assignee names represent top 20 current assignees.
How we did it?
For citation analysis, first a group was created for the bitcoin technology. The created group was selected
and analyzed using the Citation Analysis option.

SUMMARY
This report analyzes research trends of blockchain with a focus on Constructive Technologies,
Common Standards, Protocols, Cryptographic Methods and Applications and also highlights the
key companies involved in this space.
Blockchain, the technology behind bitcoin could profoundly alter the way banks do business
worldwide, lowering their operating costs and making financial services securer and more
accessible, a World Economic Forum report finds. Technology could lead to lower fees for
consumers, better regulatory oversight and better preparedness against financial bubbles, but
impact is likely to be mostly limited to the back-end of banking operations, with major
disruption through innovations such as bitcoin less likely to transform the industry.
Collaboration between competing financial institutions will be required to overcome early
challenges associated with the technology and ensure that full economic and social benefits are
realized.
Not long ago, BitX, a well-known cryptocurrency exchange in Africa and Southeast Asia, released
its code for switching between fiat currencies and bitcoin. Soon after, the startup noticed Bank
of America filed a patent for a similar technology, said Marcus Swanepoel, BitX’s chief executive.
That put BitX in a bind. If the patent is granted, the bank could theoretically go after BitX or
some of its users, or try to charge royalties. BitX’s lawyers concluded the patent would be hard
to enforce and the company ultimately decided against going to court.
Looking at the pace at which records are being file in Blockchain, we can predict drastic changes
to how we transact virtually in the near future and could bridge the gap between Traditional
Finances And The Cryptocurrency Market.

BLOCKCHAIN - OVERVIEW A blockchain is a type of distributed ledger, comprised of unchangeable, digitally recorded data in packages called blocks. A novel solution accomplishes this without any trusted central authority: maintenance of the blockchain is performed by a network of communicating nodes running bitcoin software. Transactions of the form payer X sends Y bitcoins to payee Z are broadcast to this network using readily available software applications. Network nodes can validate transactions, add them to their copy of the ledger, and then broadcast these ledger additions to other nodes. The blockchain is a distributed database – to achieve independent verification of the chain of ownership of any and every bitcoin (amount), each network node stores its own copy of the blockchain. Approximately six times per hour, a new group of accepted transactions, a block, is created, added to the blockchain, and quickly published to all nodes. This allows bitcoin software to determine when a particular bitcoin amount has been spent, which is necessary in order to prevent double-spending in an environment without central oversight. Whereas a conventional ledger records the transfers of actual bills or promissory notes that exist apart from it, the blockchain is the only place that bitcoins can be said to exist in the form of unspent outputs of transactions. Blockchain, the technology behind bitcoin could profoundly alter the way banks do business worldwide, lowering their operating costs and making financial services securer and more accessible, a World Economic Forum report finds Technology could lead to lower fees for consumers, better regulatory oversight and better preparedness against financial bubbles, but impact is likely to be mostly limited to the back-end of banking operations, with major disruption through innovations such as bitcoin less likely to transform the industry

PATENT SEARCH STRATEGY Using PatSeer, we searched individual publications and then collapsed them to one member per Family (Simple Families). Patent families are a group of one or more patent applications in multiple countries which represent the same invention. The publications included in the report are updated as of 30th Jan 2017.  We started with a set of 2015 records (unique families)  We browsed through some records to remove all the records relating to chemical combinations  We flagged/rated each individual record using Search Recall™ option present in PatSeer  We then filtered, analyzed and came across some unwanted terms/Keywords  These records were then removed from the project NOTE: All analysis in this report has been done on Simple Family (one member per family) and so the data in the charts should be construed accordingly. TECHNOLOGY LANDSCAPE FOR BLOCKCHAIN The landscape map below represents key concepts for different companies across generated across title, abstract and claims. Themes are collection of prominent topics extracted from the patent data and grouped under relevant parent tags. Clusters for Signature, Public Key, Private Key and Card Purchase Structure are close to each other as there is high degree of relevance between the records present in those types of methods. How we did it? The VizMAP tool in PatSeer Pro was used for this analysis. First the clusters were generated on title, abstract and claims using the Advanced Clustering option. Once the clusters were generated these were loaded using the Landscape mode and then the themes were colored by assignee.
  • 14. Page 14 of 20 © 2017 Gridlogics. All Rights Reserved. CORRELATION MAP FOR TOP COMPANIES ACROSS DIFFERENT THEMES In the map, each company is connected to particular application area through links whose thickness and color intensity is directly proportional to the number of records relating them. The number next to each line represents the number of records for various companies present in a particular technology area. It can be seen that Bank of America focuses more on Cards, Purchase and Structures. Most of the top companies focus on Signature, Public Key and Private Key. How we did it? The co-relation mode within VizMAP was used to correlate already generated clusters (themes) with top assignees. The resulting map was downloaded as an image.

Bitcoin uses peer-to-peer technology to operate with no central authority: transaction management and money issuance are carried out collectively by the network. The blockchain format was first used for bitcoin, as a solution to the problem of making a database both secure and not requiring a trusted administrator. The citation map below represents backward (g-1) and forward (g+1) citation set for bitcoin and the assignee names represent top 20 current assignees. How we did it? For citation analysis, first a group was created for the bitcoin technology. The created group was selected and analyzed using the Citation Analysis option.

SUMMARY This report analyzes research trends of blockchain with a focus on Constructive Technologies, Common Standards, Protocols, Cryptographic Methods and Applications and also highlights the key companies involved in this space. Blockchain, the technology behind bitcoin could profoundly alter the way banks do business worldwide, lowering their operating costs and making financial services securer and more accessible, a World Economic Forum report finds. Technology could lead to lower fees for consumers, better regulatory oversight and better preparedness against financial bubbles, but impact is likely to be mostly limited to the back-end of banking operations, with major disruption through innovations such as bitcoin less likely to transform the industry. Collaboration between competing financial institutions will be required to overcome early challenges associated with the technology and ensure that full economic and social benefits are realized. Not long ago, BitX, a well-known cryptocurrency exchange in Africa and Southeast Asia, released its code for switching between fiat currencies and bitcoin. Soon after, the startup noticed Bank of America filed a patent for a similar technology, said Marcus Swanepoel, BitX’s chief executive. That put BitX in a bind. If the patent is granted, the bank could theoretically go after BitX or some of its users, or try to charge royalties. BitX’s lawyers concluded the patent would be hard to enforce and the company ultimately decided against going to court. Looking at the pace at which records are being file in Blockchain, we can predict drastic changes to how we transact virtually in the near future and could bridge the gap between Traditional Finances And The Cryptocurrency Market.
