The Role of The Concierge
by Gabe Hartog
The term concierge was coined when the hosts of lavish
castle parties would hire a servant who would cater to the
partygoers every need. This servant was named the
Concierge.
Over time concierge were hired in lavish
hotels throughout Europe and the rest of
the world. Today, Concierge are crucial to
the success of the hotel.
The concierge is the face of the hotel they serve. Guests continually go
to the concierge for their every whim. Whether it be a grand piano in
their suite, or a guest in need of a chauffeured Bentley the hotel
concierge can make it happen.
The concierge is extremely well connected. His
phone is filled with numbers to the best
restaurants and department stores in town. He
also has many connects made throughout his
career.
An ideal concierge is a natural helper. He cannot often not
help someone. A concierge is also a natural problem solver. It
is astonishing how many solutions he has to common
problems.
These special skills the Concierge
has makes them a great asset to all
departments of a hotel . A great
concierge is the heartbeat of the
hotel and keeps everything
running smoothly.
To the Front Desk the
concierge is the first line of
defense. He uses his charm and
vast knowledge to butter up the
guests and make them feel
welcome. Happy guests make
the jobs of the Front Desk
representatives much easier.
To the bellmen and the doormen
the concierge is a library of
important guest information.
When relayed ahead of time the
doormen and bellman can use this
information to provide the guests
with impeccable service.
To the sales department the concierge is a vast
resource of outside connections that the sales
department can use as future clients.
To the Food and Beverage Department the
concierge is free advertising. His glowing
recommendation of the restaurant will
persuade guests that there is no better
restaurant in the area than the one in his
hotel.
Finally, to the guests the
Concierge is their superhero.
The hotel concierge will give
them the hotel stay of their
dreams. All the guests have to
do is ask and the concierge will
deliver.
Concierge are not exclusively employed at
hotels. They work at many luxury venues like
Disney World and luxury department stores, but
their role is still the same: to provide guests with
solutions to all their problems and keep the
property running smoothly.
Overall the concierge is the heart
beat of the hotel. He helps keep
everything run smoothly. He is a
champion to the guests and to his
co workers. He is a vast resource
of connections and guest
information. If any problem needs
solving he will solve it. Without him
the property would have to work a
lot harder to be successful.
