About Coorg
Coorg is an administrative district located in the southern state of Karnataka. It is also known as
Kodagu and covers an area of 4,102 sq km in the region covered by the Western Ghats.
To its north-west lies Dakshina Kannada, in the north is Hassan district, to its east is Mysore,
and Kannur district of Kerala is located at its south-western border. The headquarters of Coorg
district is Madikeri.
History of Coorg
The northern part of Coorg district was under the reign of Kadambas between the 2nd and 6th
century. However, after a war between the Kadambas and the Gangas in the 11th century, the
Cholas were the sole rulers of this province. After the 12th century, the Hoysalas, who were
ruling Hassan district, defeated the Cholas and in the 14th century, the Vijayanagara kings took
over and ruled the province.
After their downfall, the local Nayaks took over different parts of Coorg. The war between
different rulers of the province and the Haleri kings made the latter the new rulers of Coorg from
the year 1600 to 1834, and after their reign ended, the region of Coorg was under colonial rule.
Coorg was declared as an independent state in the year 1950 by the Indian Constitution and
when many Indian states were reorganised in the year 1956, Coorg was merged with the state
of Karnataka and declared a district. Coorg has three taluks which include Madikeri,
Somavarapete and Veerajapete.
People & Culture of Coorg
Some of the popular festivals feted here include the festival of Arms-Keilpoldu celebrated in the
month of June. As part of the celebrations of this ancient festival, weapons are polished and
worshipped before using them again. The festival celebrated around the Cauvery River is
known as Cauvery Shankaramana. In the months of November and December, the harvest
festival Puthar is celebrated by singing to folk songs and performing traditional dance forms.

Featured review about Coorg
Overall it was an amazing Madikeri trip
"While I am working in Bangalore I got some time to go on with my family tour and we planned
for south Indian places and this is the most wonderful place we visited during summer time.
Really it was an amazing experience and we felt like we were in a chill winter. The atmosphere
and the greenery is like a heaven to feel the cool breezes and deer crosses. We almost stayed
3 days here and we have taken a small villa for our stay. This place is really a heaven for
animals and that's really good to see the coffee plants around the road and we have seen them
by entering into the farm. Really this is the gifted place for Karnataka and road way is like an
amazing adventurous feel and we love to be there again. Great people and nice resorts and
amazing view from hills and the river. All were like heaven full." - Pruthvi Raj, Hyderabad, 1

Amazing trip to Coorg
"This is a beautiful place. Stay in some home stay for good local home food. You can enjoy
tasty food, chirping of birds, waterfalls, etc. Buy honey and coffee. Visit Buddhist monastery or
waterfalls or just enjoy coffee in amidst a mountain range. Loved visiting coffee estate. There
are several good places which you can visit in your stay in Coorg. First of all that you must visit
is the Abbey Falls. It is a one of a kind falls. How it was I wont tell you. Find out for yourself. ;)
You can also visit the temple, the adventure sports that are available. Basically you can do a lot
in Coorg. Next I shall move to the food. The food, if you choose the right place, would not
disappoint you. You get veg and non veg as well. You get everything arranged by the home-
stay or villa or hotel staff. In all I would say, you should visit this place at-least once in your
lifetime." - Sanjay nair , Palakkad, 2 months ago

"Well first of all, Coorg is a place where you get it all, the element of nature if you are a nature
lover, the element of party, if you are a party animal or the element of love in the air if its a
honeymoon you are thinking about. The weather is perfect the year round. You have good
sunrise and a beautiful sunset, rain, chills in the air.

Place where your on the clouds
"Kodagu: You will simply love the place for it has scenic beauty, coffee plantations and religious
places and of course love walking or be in clouds. This place has coffee plantations all around.
We stayed in Citurs tied up-hotel which was in coffee plantations. There is golden temple of
Tibetans. You will feel you are in Tibet. Full town belongs Tibetan people. The golden temple is
hard core non-believer will turn into Existence of god believer. There are three statue one of
Maha Gurji Mei Ling-Buddha and other one I don't remember now. Many monks continuously
do chanting and prayers full day there. The town they have kept very clean.
There is old beautiful Shiva temple in front of Shiva temple is beautiful lake. We visited Tal
Kaveri place. Two rivers confluence is there and on mountain temples are there and one can
see fog all around. Dubare national park is there were if you cross the river you will see
Elephant park, we can bath the elephants and ride on them. But I feel very mean things to ride
on them so will advise instead feed the elephants." - Seema Kamat, Mumbai, 3 months ago

  • 2. About Coorg Coorg is an administrative district located in the southern state of Karnataka. It is also known as Kodagu and covers an area of 4,102 sq km in the region covered by the Western Ghats. To its north-west lies Dakshina Kannada, in the north is Hassan district, to its east is Mysore, and Kannur district of Kerala is located at its south-western border. The headquarters of Coorg district is Madikeri. History of Coorg The northern part of Coorg district was under the reign of Kadambas between the 2nd and 6th century. However, after a war between the Kadambas and the Gangas in the 11th century, the Cholas were the sole rulers of this province. After the 12th century, the Hoysalas, who were ruling Hassan district, defeated the Cholas and in the 14th century, the Vijayanagara kings took over and ruled the province. After their downfall, the local Nayaks took over different parts of Coorg. The war between different rulers of the province and the Haleri kings made the latter the new rulers of Coorg from the year 1600 to 1834, and after their reign ended, the region of Coorg was under colonial rule. Coorg was declared as an independent state in the year 1950 by the Indian Constitution and when many Indian states were reorganised in the year 1956, Coorg was merged with the state of Karnataka and declared a district. Coorg has three taluks which include Madikeri, Somavarapete and Veerajapete. People & Culture of Coorg Some of the popular festivals feted here include the festival of Arms-Keilpoldu celebrated in the month of June. As part of the celebrations of this ancient festival, weapons are polished and worshipped before using them again. The festival celebrated around the Cauvery River is known as Cauvery Shankaramana. In the months of November and December, the harvest festival Puthar is celebrated by singing to folk songs and performing traditional dance forms. Things to do in Coorg Popular places in Coorg include Kakkabe, which is also the largest producer of honey in south Asia. One of the main religious sites here is the ancient Omkareshwara Temple. Nagarhole National Park is another popular tourist attraction that is home to a variety of wildlife such as elephants and panthers. With its economy dependent on agriculture, plantations and forestry, Coorg is considered to be one of the most prosperous districts in Karnataka. Known as the ‘Coffee Bowl of India’, Coorg contributes 30% to the total coffee production in India. Page 2/13

Language: Kannada STD code: 08272 Weather: Summer 19 To 34°C, Winter 14 To 29°C Featured review about Coorg Overall it was an amazing Madikeri trip "While I am working in Bangalore I got some time to go on with my family tour and we planned for south Indian places and this is the most wonderful place we visited during summer time. Really it was an amazing experience and we felt like we were in a chill winter. The atmosphere and the greenery is like a heaven to feel the cool breezes and deer crosses. We almost stayed 3 days here and we have taken a small villa for our stay. This place is really a heaven for animals and that's really good to see the coffee plants around the road and we have seen them by entering into the farm. Really this is the gifted place for Karnataka and road way is like an amazing adventurous feel and we love to be there again. Great people and nice resorts and amazing view from hills and the river. All were like heaven full." - Pruthvi Raj, Hyderabad, 1 month ago Amazing trip to Coorg "This is a beautiful place. Stay in some home stay for good local home food. You can enjoy tasty food, chirping of birds, waterfalls, etc. Buy honey and coffee. Visit Buddhist monastery or waterfalls or just enjoy coffee in amidst a mountain range. Loved visiting coffee estate. There are several good places which you can visit in your stay in Coorg. First of all that you must visit is the Abbey Falls. It is a one of a kind falls. How it was I wont tell you. Find out for yourself. ;) You can also visit the temple, the adventure sports that are available. Basically you can do a lot in Coorg. Next I shall move to the food. The food, if you choose the right place, would not disappoint you. You get veg and non veg as well. You get everything arranged by the home- stay or villa or hotel staff. In all I would say, you should visit this place at-least once in your lifetime." - Sanjay nair , Palakkad, 2 months ago If heaven is on earth, its here! "Well first of all, Coorg is a place where you get it all, the element of nature if you are a nature lover, the element of party, if you are a party animal or the element of love in the air if its a honeymoon you are thinking about. The weather is perfect the year round. You have good sunrise and a beautiful sunset, rain, chills in the air. There are several good places which you can visit in your stay in Coorg.
