There are other things you can do to vocals, to make them pop a little
more. Achieving a strong, natural sound is important, but there are
times when the vocals in a song require a little something else.
We’ll cover a few of them here…

Auto-Tune
Sometimes called pitch correction, Auto-Tune is a computer-based
effect that emerged in the early 1990’s.
As the singer approaches and dives away from true pitch, the tuned
voice helps create a shifting chorus effect. Experiment with mixing the
tuned voice at different levels. Faster tuning makes more robotic
sounds and slower tuning yields a sort of natural, pitch perfect
performance.

Modulation
Modulation effects, like chorus, flanger, phaser, and
vibrato, are very good at highlighting specific elements
of a voice. The difficulty of applying such effects is
knowing when it’s appropriate. That’s really
the challenge of engineering and mixing as a
whole. Though they might add to the song,
overusing them pulls attention away from the vocals. Image © H.Adam via Compfight

Doubling
If you really want to double a voice, the easiest and most powerful
way to do it is to record the vocal twice. Literally, double it.
Doubling is an effective way of thickening the vocal sound or adding
width. You can do this with delays or with a dedicated doubling plug-in.
Additional Compression
The idea of this is that each compressor handles different parts of the
voice, each sanding away a little of the roughness. It’s possible to get
a more controlled and dynamic performance in this way.

Filters
Filters take the simple principles of EQ and expand them to mind-boggling
complexity. There are about a million different forms and
uses for filters, but they all stem from three basic principles.
1. High Pass – High pass filters cut off the low end of a signal.
2. Low Pass – Just the opposite.
3. Band Pass – Also called notch filters. These let you cut out a
chunk of frequencies somewhere in the middle of the full
spectrum of sound.
Distortion and Saturation
Distortion on vocals is a very stylistic choice and is usually
accompanied by some sort of filter.
Saturation, on the other hand, is a remnant of the days of tape and
engineers are now using saturation plug-ins to add the fabled warmth
back to their recordings.
