2. HOW TO AVOID FORKLIFT DOWNTIME BY PLANNING AHEAD
Forklift trucks are the workhorses of any company warehouse operations.
Without this type of vital equipment, most companies would not be able to
continue operating. After all, forklift trucks make moving material around in a
warehouse easier and more efficiently. But what if the forklift truck were to
become inoperable, let's say because of a seat is worn or set of forks are
damaged? What would you do? Here's how to avoid forklift downtime because
of worn or damaged lift truck parts by planning ahead. It's just that simple.
3. The firs thing to consider is putting together a written policy and set of
procedures that require your forklift truck drivers to conduct a regular visual
inspection of their equipment. Now while it wouldn't take more than a few
minutes to do this if done every morning, for example, but perhaps this is not
something your company wants to require. If that were the case, then perhaps
something more along the lines of weekly or biweekly inspection would be
more acceptable. Whichever direction you go on this, just make sure that all
appropriate parties involved are aware of this requirement. It's important that
everyone is aware of what their responsibility is related to forklift truck
inspections. This will minimize the risk of having unplanned and unnecessary
downtime due to one or more forklift trucks that are out of commission.
Imagine if this were to happen in the middle of the workday? Can your
company afford such costly downtime that could have been avoided by
instituting preventative measures?
4. The second thing that your company can do to avoid forklift truck downtime is
to make sure that if during these inspections a driver discovers a potential
problem, that that driver calls attention to it right away. This is the only way
that unplanned downtime can be avoided not the least of which includes
unnecessary costs. Drivers need to be trained adequately in order to know
when to alert someone that something like forklift forks that are damaged are
examined to know the appropriate solution. After all, forklift forks are essential
to the efficient operations of any forklift truck and if these are damaged or
worn in any way, they must be repaired or replaced immediately to avoid
potential safety problems.
