5. FOUNDERS MESSAGE
5 | Happy Horizons Trust
Any society develops on the basis of a good education system. A lot of us
have been fortunate to go through good educational institutes, and thus
excelled in life. However, for a majority of the population in India, and
moreso in rural areas of Bihar, this is a distant dream.
This triggered a dream amongst us to improve the quality of education in
schools in our hinterlands. Over the years we have gone from 1 school to
currently working with almost 80 schools, through our different projects.
There is nothing that gives us more joy than the smiles on the faces of
the children after they have attended the sessions conducted by the
champions in the classrooms.
Similarly we take immense pride in the development of our young
champions. Their leadership development is something we witness every
single day.
This past year has been amazing as we set forth new goals and get
deeper with our engagements with the society. We started to engage
with a lot more stakeholders, and made it a point to showcase our work
across different platforms.
None of these would have been possible without the support of our
supporters and partners. It drives us to do a lot more.
We continue in this journey with your blessings.

6. THE IMPORTANCE OF ASSESSMENT
Over the years, we have user the ASER assessment tools by Pratham to
understand the development of children.
We primarily work with students in the Primary school education. Our
goal is to ensure that the students have better foundational years of
learning. We evaluate the students on their reading abilities, spoken
language, basic arithmetic, cognitive levels of development.
Using this we have formulated our Child Development Matrix, and work
keeping the overall development of the child in mind.
Over the years, through our work, we have observed an immense
improvement in the reading levels of the children and their self
confidence level.
The outlook towards to education also changed post our interventions.
There is hope.

15. At the Happy Horizons Trust, we leverage the potential of the
youth, to improve the quality of education in the schools. The
organization puts an emphasis on activity-based and
participatory methods of learning such as reading, writing,
storytelling, arts and crafts to improve the quality of education
through youths trained in delivering these sessions.
A key aspect of our work is to work on systemic level
intervention through different programs. There are multiple
projects that have come about by spending considerable
amount of time in understanding the social fabric, the norms of
the society, what would work and what would not. Our motto is
education for development. This can be applied in improving
the quality of life, social status, mindsets, careers and
opportunities, skills development, leadership, women
empowerment and health care. The trust puts a high value on
working with the system and the different stakeholders.
MODEL OF HHT
15| Happy Horizons Trust
19. EDUCATION FOR DEVELOPMENT
The poor quality of graduates today is a result of a weak
primary school education. It is difficult to think of building on a
weak foundation, for then it is just trying to play catch up and
damage control. A lot of efforts need to be put into improving
the quality of education in the primary schools. At the same
time, we have immensely energetic youths waiting to get
guidance and mentoring to drive change in the society.
Our theory of change proposes to guide the youths with a
Youth Leadership Development Program. A key part of their
responsibility is to work towards strengthening the primary
school education system, through carefully designed
intervention programs that emphasize activity based learning,
storytelling, participatory learning, arts and crafts activities.
These are critical inputs to the child’s learning that is often
missing in the schools today especially in the rurals.
So, we have two clearly identified problems. One is the low
quality of education in primary schools and other is the
unguided youth. The theory of change started with this very
simple question. “How might we create a strong local system by
which the youths can contribute back to the society and help
improve the quality of education?”
19| Happy Horizons Trust
20. Our work is unique for it looks at strengthening the local ecosystem, by
creating local change makers within the society. These empowered
youths become role models and serve as inspiration for the others. For
the youth, who go through our programs or are associated with our
trust, we provide mentoring towards higher education,
entrepreneurship and various other career options. In the short term,
this results in a positive impact within the family and in the long term
within the society.
We cannot further compromise on the quality of education in schools.
Till a few years ago, the problem was enrollment. But now that it has
been solved, the biggest problem faced by social entrepreneurs working
in education is that of quality. Better educated people would mean
better employment and better upbringing of the families.
EDUCATION FOR DEVELOPMENT
20| Happy Horizons Trust
21. CREATING SYSTEMIC IMPACT
Our mission is to use Design, Technology and Creativity to
improve the quality of education in schools in India and bring
about systemic change!
Our larger vision is towards whole school transformations. But
in order to do that, we need to break that down into multiple
smaller projects that work in harmony. We have identified the
different components of the system and the role they play.
We spent considerable time in understanding the problem
space from the perspective of the different stakeholders
(students, teachers, parents, government, development
organizations) and how we can engage them to bring systemic
change.
We are currently working on strengthening the primary school
education through a Youth Leadership Development Program
in the form of a 3 year fellowship. In the long run, post
fellowship the empowered youths are later inculcated back into
the system as trained teachers and entrepreneurs.
21| Happy Horizons Trust
22. CREATING SYSTEMIC IMPACT
It is important to work on multiple smaller projects to think of
the systemic change. The challenge with working with wicked
problems is that there is no one problem. The Kosi region of
Bihar is flood-prone every year. Once a hotbed for Polio in
India, it’s a place for other health challenges like malnutrition
and high infant mortality.
It has amongst the lowest literacy rates and is home to
extremely backward class communities, where early child
marriage is a normal thing and women become grandmothers
by 40. Almost every household has someone living outside the
state in search of livelihood, for not much opportunities for
local employment exist. Adding to this that the state has had a
history of bad law & order due to polity that is driven by caste
based politics.
When we put these together, we get a social fabric that is
immensely complicated to work with. This complex social fabric
offers immense challenges to work towards creating any
substantial impact.

25. REVITALIZING EDUCATION AND DEVELOPING YOUTH
HHT’s Focus on Education through READY (Revitalizing Education and
Developing Youth) Program
The READY program aims to prepare the youth to lead, learn and work.
We provide them the knowledge and training on leadership, which
includes critical thinking, problem-solving, digital literacy and developing
communication. We also look forward to enhancing their skills like public
speaking, mentoring, story-telling, self-confidence and organizing skills.
In the current scenario, the platforms/ schools in rural areas fail to
provide such opportunities for development and learning.
HHT recruits young girls as fellows and gives them the training to take
the sessions of the primary school children in schools as a part of their
Leadership Development Journey. As a result of this, one fellow engages
with the students of the one primary school. A monthly
scholarship/stipend is given to these fellows to empower them
economically as well. Through this program, we envision to make the
youth READY for their career, READY for higher education and READY for
starting their own business and become an entrepreneur. We hope to
make the children READY for pursuing education with higher motivation
and well-developed age-appropriate skills.

AIM OF THE PROJECT
• To use educational films as a medium of learning and enhancing the
imaginative power of the child.
• To build a sense of inquisitiveness towards how to do things.
• To create a sense of cultural sensitization amongst children through
screening movies.
LEARNING THROUGH VIDEOS
27| Happy Horizons Trust
28. LEARNING THROUGH VIDEOS
As proponents of alternative learning, we strongly believe in the power
of learning through videos and other media. Sight and sound of videos
stimulate our sensory-motor and captures quick attention. Unlike any
other method of learning, learning through videos keep students
engaged for a longer period of time, rather than getting distracted.
We project the films that are aimed at cultural sensitization, knowing
about different cultures of the world, storytelling, and building in
students a sense of inquisitiveness towards how to do things.
We started in 2015 and screened our first movie on 2015 May 22, the
projections are done using a laptop and a projector. To encourage more
public participation, the screenings are done either in classrooms or at
public spaces.

30. • To leverage digital tools & technology for better learning opportunities
and experiences.
• To ensure that the youth are able to use the power of the Internet for
education, utilities, knowledge about jobs, employment, and commerce
amongst other things.
• The aim also stretches to support local business to think about
enterprise led development.
A program to empower the youth with the understanding of technology
and its usages. We seek to create a program that enables children and
youth to understand technology, its powers and avenues for accessing
information, materials for education and ability to do tasks online, and a
larger goal of empowering them to bring positive change in the society.
The program is run at a nominal fee to cover the cost for the running of
the center.

33. To educate is to lead young minds. We need educators who believe in
the potential of each child. India has a shortage of around 1.4 million
teachers. Around 6000 schools in India do not have a teacher at all! One
of the drawbacks we have observed is the low quality of teaching that
exists across schools. The problems could be related to multiple things.
From lack of interest to the overburden of administrative work to
disinterested students. However, it is imperative of the teacher to ensure
that learning happens in the best possible manner.
SOOCHAK
AIM OF THE PROJECT
To enhance the quality of teachers in school by training teachers
To conduct workshop for school teachers at both rural and urban
schools
33| Happy Horizons Trust
34. Our Teacher Training & Leadership Development program is aimed at
enhancing the capacity of the teachers in the schools. The program is
delivered through a series of training and workshops working closely
with the school management across different schools (both rural and
urban) in India. The program gives a better understanding of the social,
economic and cultural aspects of education by means of holistic
development of teachers while imparting education. The modules are
designed to provide 360 degree training to the teachers in schools to
enhance their teaching skills and make them better at leadership.

The idea is to drive overall development of child
across multiple areas of development.
Most of these sessions coincide with a festival
and also enhances the cultural learning for a
child.

and champion Rajlakshmi spoke on behalf of the student community on the role that
good teachers and a good environment play towards receiving a good education.
Kshitiz Anand spoke about the National Education Policy 2019, and its importance in
how the education system will change in the coming years. The NEP 2019, is a
landmark moment in the history of education in India and it is the responsibility of all
stakeholders to participate and make it a success. Amongst the things discussed was
the emphasis on education from 3 years of age, building a strong foundation up to
class 5 and then to have programs on skills building by incorporating extracurricular
activities in schools. There is also an impetus on improving teacher education in the
country. Mentor and head of Teachers Training program at HHT, Shri Kumar
Vikraaditya shared his experiences from years of training teachers across Bihar. He
laid down the importance of thinking about teaching as the most important work
and laid down a framework that the teachers could follow. Project Manager Vinay
gave the vote of thanks.

We also spent time in learning from our past year and planning for next
year.
66. VISIT TO DIGANTAR, JAIPUR, RAJASTHAN
We believe that the professional growth of the team is important.
HHT's project manager Vinay Kumar attended the workshop at Digantar,
Jaipur.
Digantar is an amalgamation of different verticals each focusing on tasks
of a different nature though within the realm of elementary education.
The Digantar Vidyalaya is a vertical which is a school within itself, TARU
acts as the academic unit who’s focus is to develop academic resources,
TARU ensures the smooth working of the processes of the organization
and Shiksha Vimarsh a team dedicated to publishing an educational
magazine. While these are the permanent verticals, it also has time
bound programmes.

68. NOTE FROM OUR WELL-WISHERS
Rakesh Ranjan, Core team member
It's a pleasure seeing HHT changing its role in prevailing conditions, we were quick to
take up new challenges in the COVID-19 lockdown period. Raising funds for the
much-needed ration distribution in the far-flung communities has been a soul
satisfying experience. Thanks to our solid ground team which carried out this difficult
task and kept us updated. As a part of this team I have contributed my organizational
management knowledge, the least I could do as a part of remote team.
We are looking to change the way we work and adapt to more tech based
methodologies in the coming time, I believe I can give more with my tech skills in the
coming days.
Manish Pathak, Core team member
I have been associated with HHT since last 5 years now and I am just in awe with the
energy and passion that our team has. Each and every project, each and every day,
be it about our champion program, or learning videos program or internet
awareness program.
Never came across such a dedicated team on ground - Vinay, Sonu and Jyoti and all
those associated with this initiative. Including the management team whose
leadership has been amazing.
Our volunteers have been running on the ground, managing from start to finish and
doing the best that they can. We feel the change that bring, the parents of the
champions feel it, the school feel it and the society feels it. They have grown in
experience and have started taking up team lead roles. Such a humbling experience
to see them grow in their chosen path.
I wish the whole team very best and all success in their future endeavours.

Pranav Kumar
Accountant, DEO office, Govt of Bihar
I greatly appreciate the efforts being made by the organization in the field of
education. I congratulate all the members working in the organization and hope that
in the future, you will continue to work in the field of education with new ideas.
69. NOTE FROM OUR WELL-WISHERS
Kumar Vikramaditya
Teacher Trainer and Writer, Govt of Bihar
Best Wishes for Happy Horizons Trust.
Imagination takes a good shape when anyone applies all basic needs to fulfill it. HHT
is slowly making a new horizon for growing children in such a area where nothing
seems to appear except poverty and illiteracy. The remote area of Koshi always
demands an educational platform where such poor student fulfills their dream.
Corona epidemic changes all lifestyles of the public as well as students. In such a
critical condition where saving lives is much important, HHT did such a good work
that will always be remembered by the people of this area, after getting the
educational content the face of those children blossomed like a pink rose of nature .
Hope HHT may also blossom like those children.
Kumar Ravishankar
Senior Translation Officer, ESI Corporation,
Ministry of Labour & Employment, Govt. of India.
I have known the NGO, Happy Horizons Trust in special, ever since 2017. On 2018
during the event of Koshi Film Festival, Saharsa Group got the opportunity to honor
Kshitiz Anand, founder of Happy Horizon Trust for its service towards the humanity.
The way in which organisation is working in education, healthcare, livelihoods and
empowering youth in Saharsa district and in entire Bihar is highly impressive and
appreciable.
What I have witnessed in the month of November,2019 in its office in Simri
Bakhtiyarpur makes me even more excited about the future and the ways in which
the members/ champions of Happy Horizon Trust serve the community. The
challenges due to pandemic recently presented as a result of uncertain and alarming
conditions of livelihood but the organisation confronted the situation and helped
thousand of families. Wish all the best to Happy Horizons Trust for sustainable
services with the spirit to spread education that they are known for. We are here
with you and for you.

74. THE JOURNEY AHEAD
74| Happy Horizons Trust
The Journey that started with a small story telling session has grown into a
movement. Along the way we have learnt a whole lot of things.
From creating a team to working at the grassroots level. From engaging with both
internal and external stakeholders to standing up for what is right.
Needless to say, the journey so far has been filled with challenges and we have
learnt all along.
Over the years, we have come to understand the society from grounds up and do
feel that there is a lot of work that needs to be done. One can pick up any area of
work, be it education or healthcare or women empowerment or agriculture. There is
just a whole lot of problems that demand our attention.
We at Happy Horizons Trust see ourselves as problem solvers and while we
understand and acknowledge the presence of problems, we drive ourselves to think
in solutions.
All of us here at the Happy Horizons Trust are more inspired than ever before about
our work and the important role we have to play in the development of the society.
We seek all your support in this exciting journey ahead.
