• Walter Raleigh: Englishman who received a charter from
Queen Elizabeth I and who sponsored three expeditions
to the New World.
• Sent 1st expedition in 1584
• Arrived off coast of North Carolina
• Native Americans welcomed explorers
• Queen Elizabeth dubbed Raleigh making him “Sir Walter
Raleigh”
• Sent 2nd expedition to settle in 1585
• Ralph Lane Colony
• Failed due to lack of food and supplies
• Raleigh will attempt one more time in 1587

4. JAMESTOWN
• First successful colony in 1607 that saw success due
to many factors, including the popularity of crops
like tobacco, leadership from John Smith and aid
from Native Americans (ex. Pocahontas).
• Goal: find gold and other natural resources
• 144 men sailed from England
• 39 died during journey
• Settle by the “James River”
• Why did they chose to settle next to the river?
• By river: easy to bring in people & supplies
• Inland: Hidden from Spanish ships sailing
in Atlantic

• Persecute: To mistreat due to one's religion, race, or
political beliefs.
• Who were the Pilgrims?
• Pilgrim: people who make a journey for religious purposes
• Separatists: people who decided to break away from Church of
England
• Set sail for North America in 1620
• Landed at present-day Plymouth Massachusetts
• Had good relationship with Natives
• The Mayflower Compact
• Set up formal government
• Required colonists to follow the compact's
rules and regulations for the sake of survival

9. MASSACHUSETTS BAY COLONY
• 1628
• Present day cities of Salem and Boston
• Settlers were Puritans
• believed church should be “purified” and get rid of catholic
beliefs
• Intolerant of other religions
• Tried to keep towns “exclusive”
