6. INTRODUCTION
• FAMILY: Caricaceae
SCIENTIFIC NAME: Carica papaya L.
ORIGIN: American tropical lowlands
• Carica papaya, is a powerhouse of nutrients, it contains both
macro and micronutrients and several enzymes.
• Papaya leaves are used to make medicine and leaves extract
having potential Activity of increasing platlets against dengue
fever found in their study. . (Ahmed et al)
• it`s used for preventing and treating gastrointestinal tract
disorders, intestinal parasite infections. It is also used for nerve
pains .
7. Continue…
• The enzymes include papain , chymopapain.
• Possible mechanisms of action include the activity of proteolytic
enzymes, chemopapain and papain, as well as an antimicrobial
activity.papain improved digestion of protein.
• Due to its antioxidant properties, papaya prevents the oxidation
of cholesterol. Also, the high fiber content helps in lowering the
bad cholesterol level. also contains several protein-digesting
enzymes -papain and chymopapain which are responsible to
lower inflammation and improves healing from burns.

10. Active ingredients
• Papaya contains a chemical called papain, which is commonly
used as a meat tenderizer.
• Papain breaks down proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. That’s
why it works as a meat tenderizer. However, papain is changed
by digestive juices, so there is some question about whether it
could be effective as a medicine when taken by mouth.
Papaya also contains a chemical called carpain. Carpain seems
to be able to kill certain parasites, and it might affect the
central nervous system.
11. health benefits and uses of papaya
•Diabetes
• lower Blood Pressure
(A.Eno. and R.Konya,2000)
•Asthma prevention
•Reduced risk of certain cancer like prostate cancer
•lower inflammation and improves healing from burns
•lowering the bad cholesterol level.
13. Mechanism of action
• Major digestion problems occur when undigested food reaches
lower intestine. This happens particularly in case of eating large
quantities of meat with fast speed. The natural digestive
enzymes produced in the pancreas and stomach acids generally
can’t meet the digestion requirements under those conditions.
(Tenenhouse, Harriet S. Deutsch, H. F.1966)
• Unlike carbohydrates, which get digested by saliva produced
during chewing, protein do not get digested by saliva. Protein
digestion has a different mechanism. Protein gets digested with
the help of proteolytic enzymes produced in the pancreas.
14. • Papaya helps digesting proteins well because Papain is similar other
types of enzymes made in the pancreas that help our bodies digest meat.
But, these enzymes need acid for activation and papain can work even
without the presence of acid.(Tsai C C, Linn C C)
• digestive benefits of papaya comes from various proteolytic (protein
digesting) enzymes. papain which is very similar to the digestive juice
pepsin. An important characteristic of papain is that it breaks down
proteins.
• It breaks complex bonds of protein down to individual amino
acids which are ready for use for repair and growth of the body
