How Natural User Interfaces are changing Human Computer Interaction

(Presentation that I did at UX-LX in 2010) We are living a new ‘wave’ of innovation in Human-Computer Interaction, as new devices and technologies are allowing the creation of new forms of interaction. These new technologies are the building blocks for us, software developers, designers, and architects, to create more natural and intuitive interfaces for our applications. These new technologies are, not only multi-touch enabled, but also allow multiple users to interact simultaneously with the application, in a collaborative manner, opening a world of possibilities and potential for next generation software to take advantage of. New platforms and tools are emerging every day, such as Microsoft Surface, Apple's Iphone, Pranav Mistry's Sixth Sense, and the upcoming Xbox360's Project Natal are great examples of this ‘new wave’ of technology, and the positive feedback these new ideas are receiving prove that users value this change. I think that now it’s important to stop and evaluate the impact we, as IT Professionals, can have on the way users interact with devices, with information and even each other, and how we can take advantage of these new tools and add value to our applications. UX is not just about building huge coherent web architectures. We have become digital nomads - building tents, rather than building houses, in environments that suit our needs. People no longer inhabit worlds built by designers, but in worlds built by themselves. Increasingly it is about building applications and understanding how applications interact with each other and their embedded environment. It is about forging relevant links with technologies that are appropriate. Relevance has surpassed usability as the most important factor of web strategy and web design. Context defines how usable your experience needs to be, and we are steadily moving from interface design to concept design...IA and UX has for many years looked at the web in a traditional one way communications paradigm, where it is all about conveying a message to the end user. But the Internet is NOT the new newspaper, the new radio or the new television. The web is actually not a medium at all, if anything it is a paradigm of interaction. It is something completely different which as a discipline we need to demonstrate with an open approach to our design work, that is documented, shared and refined. Those involved in the field must realize that usability is becoming more bound by context and relevance to individual needs, it cannot be merely prescriptive.

With the rise of IoT and more and more Controllers and Sensors coming we as developers have now a lot more SDKs and Controller OS than we can handle. As a IoT developer I value a system that I can leverage that can take away a lot of the complexity of communication, interoperability, security, updating, and lets me focus on my business logic and what I want to build. This talk will focus on the Windows 10 IoT Core OS and how to build IoT Apps for it, how to connect sensors and actuators to the GPIO of a Raspberry Pi running the W10 IoT Core, how to debug on that device, and how to connect it to the Azure Cloud in a secure way and use that cloud to control the device. This will be a technical talk with a lot of code and almost no slides, and a great opportunity to get to know these technologies in a bit more deepness.

This was a session given at Agile Portugal 2015 by myself and my good friend and colegue Ricardo Jesus. We come here to share our experiences on the last 6 years delivering various waves of 2 very large projects, for 2 very big customers of Microsoft Consulting Services, on 2 different teams we’ve lead. We would like to share our mistakes, our wins and how we leveraged Agile methodologies to deliver on time and on budget projects that were scoped and planed as fixed fee, with all iterations built on top of a Waterfall model, and as most projects, with a very tight schedule. As you may know Agile methodologies like SCRUM, XP, KANBAN are most commonly used on Time & Materials type of projects where the Stakeholders control a budget (time and/or money) and decide the best way to use that budget on each iteration. In the case of Fixed Fee the scope of the project is set at the start of the project and now the team has to deliver on time and on budget all the features defined in the scope. On top of that Microsoft Consulting Services has a very strict delivery framework built on top of a waterfall model… So we had to adapt and build a agile framework that would optimize the team’s performance and would deliver all the milestones that were set with the stakeholders and project management team. We learned a lot from these projects: the value of a strongly committed teams, the price of wasteful processes, the value of rapidly adapt and facilitating change and, most importantly, that what works now may not be so on the next iteration. We want to share all these lessons and practical examples that we’ve lived and learned from.

The way we interact with technology has suffered great changes in the last couple of years. Ever since the invention of the command line interface that we have been seeing changes in the way we interact with technology. Today we have touch technology on our PCs, cellphones, GPS, we use voice commands to control our cars, and we even use gestures to play video games. But we need to understand the differences and resemblances between the different modules of interactions and there "ancestors" so that we can truly take advantage of this change. In some ways like when the GUI came out, NUI are here to stay, and its our duty as IT professionals to take the maximum advantage of this new technology and new way of HCI.
