The document discusses the IEEE-SA STD 1876/2019 standard for online laboratories for education. The standard defines methods for storing and retrieving learning objects used in remote labs. It also defines methods for linking learning objects to design smart learning environments for remote online labs. The standard addresses definitions, metadata, services, sensors/actuators, and an online laboratories learning object metadata extension based on IEEE 1484.12.1. It also discusses recommended verbs for learning analytics using the xAPI standard.

Networked Smart Learning Objects for Online Laboratories
Scope: This standard defines methods for storing and retrieving learning objects for remote laboratories. The
standard will also define methods for linking learning objects to design and implement smart learning environments
for remote online laboratories. These objects are, for example, interfaces for devices connected to user computers
over computers networks and the devices themselves. They are also learning scenarios or collaboration tools for
communications necessary to conduct an activity of practical online laboratory work; to design and implement
mechanisms that make smart learning environment formed by the ad hoc aggregation of learning objects taking into
account the pedagogical context for their use.

17. Metadata
(LaaS)
General Metadata General information on
the online laboratory such as the title,
description, contact and type of
exploitation license.
Binding Metadata. Binding metadata that
provide the list of Services APIs contained
in the laboratory, both solenoid (actuator)
and sensor (receiver).
Authorization metadata. Describe the
security schemes and mechanisms used in
the laboratory to allow access to the
different Services remotely.
Concurrent Access Metadata. Describe
the mechanisms that manage possible
simultaneous multiple access requests.
18. Services
(LaaS)
Metadata service: This service returns a description
of the online lab, its mechanisms and services. The
information provided by this service shall be sufficient
to programmatically define a user interface and the
related client-server communication.
Sensor service: This service returns data from a
‘sensor’ of the online lab.
Actuator service: This service allows control of an
‘actuator’ of the online lab.
Configuration service: This service returns available
configurations and sets configurations for an online
lab.
19. Optional Services (LaaS)
Client service: A list of client applications
providing a user interface to the online lab may
be provided by the online lab itself.
User activity logging service: This optional
service provides a method to retrieve logged user
actions. This service can be based on the
‘Logging and Alarms’ functionality discussed in
4.4.1.
Models service: Various information about the
connected equipment can be sent to the client
application.
21. OL LOM Online Laboratories
Learning Object Metadata
The Online Laboratories Learning Object Metadata (OL
LOM) is an application profile of IEEE Std 1484.12.1-2002,
which is optimized for use by educational online
laboratories community.
Application Profile Principles:
• Adding constraints: e.g., restricting the number of
elements that may be used or the number of times and
ways in which an element may be repeated
• Adding extensions: e.g., adding a new term to an
existing vocabulary, adding a new vocabulary to an
existing element or adding a new element

25. Community
of Practice
CoP responsibilities:
• It is very important that such communities
share best practices.
• Define the identifiers (verbs, activity
types,contextual relationships, extensions,
etc.) to be used in their use cases.
• Define these identifiers in a profile/recipes.
This is a set of rules and/or vocabularies to
implemented in addition to xAPI for the
particular use case being addressed.

• Eolic Lab

• Actuators:
• Fan (engine) 0 – 168 W
• Wing Rotator (engine) -150 –
150
• Battery – act as actuator,
because the student can decide
to use a percentage of the load.
• Sensors:
• Battery – act as a sensor, the
percentage of the battery
loaded by fan
