Familiar environment – established habits.\nWe’re working in a familiar environment with established habits - that is a very central part of most households. \nWe all know that established habits are very hard to break. And as I touched on earlier, one of the strongest habits is the fact that we tend to associate TV to linear content. We think of TV as channel based.\nBut also....\n\n
It’s traditionally lean back experience – there’s still this sense of comfort that comes from channel surfing, despite most TVs having onscreen program guides – there’s still something to be said about kicking back, relaxing and just hitting channel up/channel down.\nWe think of TV as entertainment – as a leisure experience. It’s what we do to relax and enjoy ourselves. And it’s this notion that watching TV should not be work. It should not be complicated, and really at the end of the day, it’s about WATCHING – about consuming the content.\nOr not. Sometimes TV is just the thing that’s on in the background, that you half pay attention to whilst you’re multi-tasking on your laptop or mobile device.\nAnd I’m sure we’ve ended up watching crap shows just because they happen to be on and we’re too lazy to change the channel. The other day I found my self stuck on Gem watching Catwoman. Quite possibly the worst movie ever. \nSo if I’m too lazy to even change the channel from something I’m not even enjoying, then it’s going to be an even bigger challenge to try and convince people to pick up the remote and be actively engaged.\n\n
The TV experience is typically a shared experience in a shared environment.\nLet’s face it - We’ve all fought over the remote control and argued about what to watch. And if we’re already arguing about what’s on, it’s even more difficult when you consider putting things over top what’s on. \nReally, the challenge here is understanding what’s appropriate for TV in a shared environment, and how the context of a shared experience can affect what you ultimately design.\n\n\n
Lastly\nThere are a lot of limitations on input and design patterns\nWe talked about this idea of lean back, lean forward, and TV is commonly referred to as a 10 foot experience – and these are traditionally remote driven.\nTV remotes are not the easiest things to work with – and not all remotes are built the same.\nThey typically only (in terms of navigation) offer a 4 way directional control – up, down, left, right and of course OK. If you’re lucky, you might have a back button. You might also have a menu button. And if you’re really lucky, you might have some colour buttons.\nWith four directions and an OK, this really limits the interaction models and design patterns that can be used. This coupled with lack of animation means that affordance is always an issue.\nThere’s often no easy way to input text. I’m sure some of you have seen really horrific examples of trying to lump a keyboard into the remote. Seriously, if you see Sony’s remote, it’s laughable. Like a giant playstation controller, with a keyboard thrown in for good measure. \nDifficulty of actually inputting text via a remote device limits what’s appropriate for a 10 foot experience.\nMoving forward gestural interfaces – starting right now with LG’s magic motion – which is kind of like a wii mote, has its own interaction challenges. And moving further with things like kinect - now that’s a whole new world of interaction possibilities and new challenges with affordance.\n\n
