This proposal outlines the requirements to support departmental websites on the History Department's internet server over 12 months. It will require hardware and software upgrades, as well as internet instruction, system support, and a student assistant. The total cost is estimated to be $13,403.95. Supported departments will include Art History, Comparative Literature, English, and Slavic Languages. The goal is to help them develop expertise to independently manage their own departmental internet servers in the future.

1. FAS Departmental Web Sites On The History Internet Server
Support Requirements
1
Executive Summary:
This proposal delineates the requirements for providing effective support
over a period of 12 months to Departmental WWW Sites within FAS using
the History Department’s Internet Server as a hardware platform. As a result
of this experience of working with Web sites on the History Internet Server,
we seek to help other Departments in developing the in-house expertise which
will enable them to establish independent Departmental Internet Servers in the
future. The following is a breakout of the hardware and software upgrades,
system support time, and educational outreach program needed to serve these
additional sites from the History machine. Supported Departments will include
-- but will not be limited to -- Art History, Comparative Literature, English,
and Slavic Languages.

Hardware Upgrades
Notes:
1. The History WWW server presently has a 1 GB hard disk. This space is
woefully inadequate to accommodate the needs of multiple WWW sites. Slavic
languages alone has requested .5 GB for it’s multimedia site. Art History has
requested the archiving of image files for instructional purposes. English and
Comparative Literature will eventually seek to store large text files on the server.
A 9 GB SCSI Drive will accommodate the needs of these Departments and leave
some room for expansion.
2. The History WWW server presently has no tape backup system. The sysadmin
is currently backing up the WWW site to a workstation at Hill Center. Although
this is sufficient to the present History site, it is clearly inadequate to the task of
providing reliable backups for multiple WWW sites. A DDS-2 DAT Drive (16
GB) will provide affordable and reliable backup capacity for the entire system.

Software Upgrades and Documentation
Notes:
1. Although the WEBForce Indy package is rich in high-end graphical tools for
the generation of Web Content, it did not come with the software needed to
implement many of the command line options used to manage Web sites
remotely. The SDO (Software Developer’s Option) CD contains the software
needed to do this.
2. Due to the load which will be generated on the History WWW server by
supporting other Departments, the History Department plans to develop its
Oracle database on a separate platform. The Windows NT Server license and
documentation will be used to develop the Oracle database on a pentium machine
in the Department. History has moved expeditiously to request the NT version of
Oracle from NBCS. We await the OS upgrade to begin implementation of our
database.

Internet Software Instruction
Course 1: Introduction to the Silicon Graphics Indy Server
The WEBFORCE Authoring Environment
Course overview: One or more representatives from each Dept. will attend a half-day
session introducing them to the Silicon Graphics WWW Server. This class will focus on
the Web Authoring tools available on this platform for participating Departments.
Instruction will include an introduction to the Silicon Graphics X-Windows
Environment, WebMagic, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. A brief introduction
to command line UNIX software for Webmasters will be included.
Course Materials: To be determined.
Course 2: Workshop on RUNfree for Windows
Graphical Internet Tools and The History WWW Server
Course Overview: One or more representatives from each Dept. will attend a half-day
session on the installation and support of the Rutgers University RUNfree software
package. This will include specific instructions on the use of RUNfree software for
interaction with the History Department’s WWW server. Though Rutgers Computing
Services plans to offer RUNfree classes, this session is a customized version of this class
which contains additional material of relevance to Departmental Webmasters in the
humanities disciplines.
Course Materials: Each participating Department will receive 10 copies of RUNfree with
documentation sets.
Course 3: Workshop on RUNfree for the Macintosh
Graphical Internet Tools and The History WWW Server
Course Overview: One or more representatives from each Dept. will attend a half-day
session on the installation and support of the Rutgers University RUNfree software
package for the Macintosh. This will include specific instructions on the use of
RUNfree software for interaction with the History Department’s WWW server. Though
Rutgers Computing Services plans to offer RUNfree classes, this session is a customized

Course Materials: Each participating Department will receive 10 copies of RUNfree with
documentation sets.
Course 4: Workshop on Netscape Server Software
WWW Server Administration for Departmental Webmasters
Course Overview: This half-day session will cover the use of Netscape Navigator
Software to administer the Netscape Commerce Server. Since each Department will have
its own Web structure, it is very important that each Departmental Web Master have an
understanding of the capabilities of this server package.
Course Materials: Each participant will receive a copy of Netscape’s Commerce Server
Reference Guide.
Each course will cost $300.00 for workshop preparation and presentation.

System Support Requirements
The History Department System Administrator will install, configure and maintain
system hardware and software over a 12 month period on the History Department’s
WWW server in support of Departmental Webmasters in FAS. This system support time
will be used to assist Departmental Webmasters in the configuration and maintenance of
Department level WWW sites on the History Department’s SGI server. This support will
include, but will not be limited to, the following FAS Departments -- English, Art
History, and Comparative Literature. The History Department System Administrator will
provide regular backups of Web sites, additional system-wide WWW software
development, and help desk support to Departmental Webmasters.

Student Support Requirements
Student support is an essential component of this project. The task of copying RUNfree
diskettes and documentation for direct distribution to participating FAS Departments is
very important to ensuring that faculty and graduate students have access to graphical
Internet interfaces which will enhance their ability to provide content on the Web.
History will offer assistance to selected faculty members and/or graduate students in
participating Departments on a one-on-one basis to familiarize them with WWW
authoring. Student support is also essential in developing the HTML documents which
will assist Departmental Webmasters in developing and maintaining high-quality Web
Sites in the humanities.
