- So what is this industrial Internet? Industrial machines are being equipped with a growing number of electronic sensors that allow them to see, hear, feel a lot more than ever before, generating prodigious amounts of data. Increasingly sophisticated analytics then sift through the data, providing insights that allow us to operate the machines in entirely new ways, a lot more efficiently. And not just individual machines, but fleets of locomotives, airplanes, entire systems like power grids, hospitals. It is asset optimization and system optimization. Of course, electronic sensors have been around for some time, but something has changed: a sharp decline in the cost of sensors and, thanks to advances in cloud computing, a rapid decrease in the cost of storing and processing data. Fit in sensor to one part of the engine and it communicates news about that one part.. Fit in multiple parts and then one airplane starts talking.. Make a fleet talk via sensor communication and the ultimate thing would be a network of fleets… Business value – Optimization at every level! Machines are Predictive, Reactive and Social
- In this regard, modelling plays a key role in managing the increasing complexity of technological systems (see Chapter 5.2). The appropriate IT systems should be deployed in order to provide end-to-end support to the entire value chain, from product development to manufacturing system engineering, production and service (see Fig. 7). A holistic systems engineering approach is required that spans the different technical disciplines. For this to be possible, engineers will need to receive the appropriate training.
- The increasing capabilities of smart, connected products not only reshape competition within industries but expand industry boundaries. This occurs as the basis of competition shifts from discrete products, to product systems consisting of closely related products, to systems of systems that link an array of product systems together. A tractor company, for example, may find itself competing in a broader farm automation industry.
