The Synthetic Potential of
Chlorine Dioxide for Oxidation of
Terpenes
Autors: Grebyonkina O. N.
Scientific supervisor: Rubtsova S. A.
2. Topicality
ClO2 has been used effectively for water treatment and
bleaching wood. Furthermore, ClO2 is an available
oxidant that is produced on an industrial scale.
3. The purpose
• To determine the synthetic potential of chlorine
dioxide under different conditions
Research problems
1.To identify the reaction products;
2.To study the effect of solvent nature on the
composition of the reaction products
4. The conditions of the experiment
Solvents:
•heptane;
•dichloromethane;
•alcohols;
•pyridine.
Reaction time – 2 hours.
Reactants molar ratio:
•1:0.5 (drawback of oxidant)
•1:1
•1:2 (excess of oxidant)
7. Conclusion
• We determine the line of oxidation reaction
under different conditions.
• It’s shown that excess of oxidant is important
condition for the formation of oxygen-containing
derivatives.
• Drawback of ClO2 oxidation in the presence of
low-polarity solvents affords trisulfide.
• The presence of pyridine leads quantitative
formation of sulfonic acid.
8. Application
Studies in the field of terpene disulfides chemistry
are connected with their practical significance as
potential biological active compounds for
production of medical substances, pesticides,
fragrant substances, flotation reagents, softeners
and detergents
