INTRODUCTION
The suffering of Egyptian women lasted for the first half of 2015, which included suffering all
kinds of abuses ranging from murder, through the Compulsory disappearances, arbitrary
detention, violations which have affected both the minors, mothers and wives, and also
violations included issuing arbitrary sentences ranging up to death of an entire family.
METHODOLOGY REPORT
The methodology of this report depended on the following:
- The collection of daily information by the monitoring unit of the Egyptian coordination of
Rights and Freedoms, a unit connected to a team of activists and lawyers all over the Republic
to monitor the issue of the arrest and disappearance of women by the security authorities.
Fourth: The legal texts related
International covenants and conventions signed by Egypt have many provisions that warn of
prejudice to the freedom and dignity of women, including:
- "CEDAW" Agreement of 1979 stipulates in the third article that: [Countries signing this
agreement shall take in all fields, in particular in the political, social, economic and cultural
fields, all appropriate measures, including legislation, to ensure the development and
advancement of women. The purpose is to guarantee their human rights and fundamental
freedoms and allow women to enjoy them on the basis of equality with men. It is clear that the
Convention focused on providing the basic human freedoms and guarantees for women, and
then off to other rights, not relapse and undo the original human rights.
- The Declaration " on the elimination of violence against women" , issued in December 1993 ,
in Article II / c clause defines violence against women as both " civil violence , sexual and
psychological perpetrated or condoned by the State , wherever it occurs ." ..
- The third article of the same declaration emphasizes: Article 3 [women have the right to
enjoy, on an equal footing with men, all human rights and fundamental freedoms and the
protection of these rights and freedoms, and that in the political, economic, social, cultural, and
civil or any other field. Among these rights the following: the right to life, the right to equality,
the right to liberty and security of person, the right to equal protection of the law, the right not
to be subjected to any form of discrimination, the right to the highest attainable standard of
physical health, the right conditions for fair labor and favorable, the right to be free from
torture or cruel, inhuman or degrading punishment] ..

Egyptian women rights
During the period January till July,24th
2015
The truth is that the situation of Egyptian women and the emphasis on respect for their
freedom and dignity, not too far from the Egyptian constitutions time differences, showing
that for example:
- Both the 1971 Constitution, and the Constitution of 2012, were keen on women's right to be
equal to the man's political life, and then all of the related issues such as expressing an opinion
or community practice: [Article 11 The State shall ensure coordination between the duties of
woman towards the family and her work in the community, and their equality with men in the
fields of political, social, cultural and economic life, without prejudice to the provisions of
Islamic Sharia]
- The state has also pledged in the 2014 Constitution, in Article 11: The State shall ensure the
achievement of equality between women and men in all civil, political, economic, social and
cultural rights in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution. The State shall endeavor
to take measures to ensure appropriate representation of women represented in parliaments,
as prescribed by law, and guarantee women the right to hold public office and functions of
senior management in the state and appointment to the competent judicial bodies, without
discrimination against them. State and is committed to protecting women against all forms of
violence, and to ensure the empowerment of women to reconcile family duties and work
requirements. Also committed to providing care and protection of motherhood and childhood
and women breadwinners and elderly and women most in need].
ARBITRARY ARREST AND DETENTION
- This report is being issued while there are still 98 girls and women in custody, arbitrary
detention by the security authorities, at different periods and times, in addition to the 4 cases
of compulsory disappearance that haven't been found yet …
(1) Division, according to the provinces
- Cairo occupies the largest proportion concerning the number of detainees by 51 detained,
other governorates come after Cairo in order as follows, Damietta occupies largest number
after Cairo, where it reached the number of 10 detainees there until now, followed by the
Gharbeia with 9 detainees, then Dakahlia with 8 detainees, then Alexandrian with 6 detainees,
then Beni Suef with 4 datinees, Giza with 3 detainees, Sohag comes right after with 2 detinees,

(2) Division according to periods of detention
Detainees are distributed among the years 2013, 2014 and 2015, the number of detainees
since August 2013 To date, has reached 11 detained, and since 2014 to date, 25 detained,
while during the study period among the detainees who have been monitored for different
periods and then went out, we are left with a 62 detained so far in 2015 alone …
The case of the two sisters, "Hend and Rasha Munir" represents the longest case of arrest as
they were arrested in the wake of the events of August, 16, 2013 to date, which means they are
about to complete two years in detention ..
(3)The most prudent violations concerning arrests during the study period
a. house arrests and charges fabrication later
Where there was the arrest of both: (Samar Hassan Mahmoud al-Najjar, who was arrested in
February 11, 2015, and at the same date Farida Ali Ahmed- they were released later in July 7,
2015, but still charged with the fabricated crimes- as well as "Hanan kamel" 50 years, arrested
in March 20,2015 during her husband's arrest, "Mahmoud Mursi" from Marj in Cairo, women
were equal to men when it came to storming villages raids and campaigns by the police forces.
As "Reham Hussein Mustafa Ahmed" was arrested from her home during the campaign of
raids and incursions into the center of Tama - Sohag in March 10 2015)...
Since that arrest case of "Israa Khaled Mohammed Said," 20-year-old, and who was arrested
from her home in January 20, 2015, from Beni Suef governorate, she is now detained in public
Minya prison, where she was charged with fabricated crimes. The charges are "hitting
Electricity Transformers in Wasti center, a storehouse arson, arsoning Beni Suef judges Club,
threatening to kill officers, and running pages to incite against the current regime and security
forces management." Which no evidence or proof were admitted to prove them, as well as they
were hard to believe charges because they weren't commensurate with the girl's possibilities
at that age. While the pages management, is among things protected by the freedom of thought
and expression which the law and the Constitution stressed the need for their respect and
support.
B. Journalists Editors arrested
- Unlike the arrest of activists accused of the management or update of their pages on social
networking sites, there have been journalists editors arrested, their profession is journal
editing and writing, they are: "Farida Ali Ahmed," 42-year-old, and "Samar Hassan Mahmoud
al-Najjar," who have been charged with stereotype fabricated charges, which is done when
there are no real charges, facts or evidence, as the charges were "spying and joining a terrorist
group founded at odds with the law and the Constitution intended to disable the provisions of

the Constitution and the dissemination of false news." Although they were released later in
July 2015, however, they came out on the same charges fabricated to them.
The third case was re- arrested liberated " Rasha Mr. Abdo Jafar " and that of the re- trial on
trumped-up charges hearing, where he spent the appeal to ease the sentence to a year, after it
was the previous regime, which was her release after imprisonment two years, is, and so he
was arrested again from the seat of the Court to complete the confinement period.
- And it is the fourth case of the girl , " Isra -term" , which was hijacked and forced to hide , and
the denial of treatment , all under the pretext of its freelance photographer , a situation which
will be clarified later in the talk of enforced disappearance .
C. The arrest of minors
Among them :( Shorouk Abdel Nabi Faraj, 17 years old , Raheeq Said Ali Hassan 17 years –
from Matareya area in July 10, 2015 , " Maha Ahmed Fahmy, " 17 -year-old from Menia January
21, 2015 , Mariam Yasir Hameed Ahmed 15 years , rom Ajami Alexandria , Huda Mustafa Gad
al-Haq, from Matareya April 10, 2015 .
Sixth: compulsory disappearances and deprivation of treatment
(1) 4 cases of compulsory disappeared
Unlike those who have been forced into disappearing and then infrequently showed, there are
still four cases of enforced disappearances of girls and women to date, they are: "Rania Ali
Omar Rashwan, Mona Medhat, Hend Rashid, and Ola Abdul Hakim"
(2) " Israa Altaweel," a suffering model...
Israa Altaweel represents the model case of what ails the Egyptian women in prison at that
time, as she was kidnapped along with a number of young people near the Corniche in Maadi,
since the first of June 2015.
- After more than two weeks and on the sixteenth day. Some information appeared on the page
mentioned that its conclusion was a visitor who was in Qanater prison watched Israa wearing
black clothes , which appeared in the pictures when they went out to dinner with her
colleagues . It was the first signal that she is alive and she was transferred to the women's
prison in the city of Qanater. That was the beginning of the removal of at least some of the
mystery on her story. After a day or two I read the news leak that the girl was brought before
the state security prosecution. This means that Israa was possible to remain hidden for more
than this. And this is a pointer to the downturn that hit the state of law: as girls are abducted
without any judicial or legal ground, and later charged with fabricated accusations to justify
their position.

- Esraa is infected and threatened with paraplegic, and since her hijack, she was deprived of
treatment, which threatened a decline in her health progress which had been made .
- Esraa's family has recently published a long letter from their daughter, wrote from the
Qanater prison where she is incarcerated and published through the social networking site
"Facebook"...
- And to the text of the letter:
« (1) our friend indefatigable ... sincere thinning says what he does
Monday, June 1 was Suhaib's session, I talked to Omar on the phone telling him how scared I
am for Suhaib and I wish I could go to trial instead of him... Omar said to me "will not happen
to us except what Allah has decreed for us" and every one of us is destined to his own fate, we
can only stand by his side... let's go out for fun I'll finish working and we shall go down to ride
horses .
(2) In Time
On the same day Omar wanted me to watch the movie"In Time", and I said to Omar that we
should thank Allah for not knownig the future, when we shall die or what should happen to us
and tried to imagine what might happen but I was at awe of the idea…. While we were on the
horses, I lost my attention …. Omar asked me what I am thinking … I was thinking that I am
afraid that the time might pass while we are together.
(3) Last Dinner
After the horse riding we were confused where to eat … one thing I like about Omar is that he
likes trying new food …. Every week we go to a new place … he never tried Chili's before and
the nearest branch was at Nile City-Zamalek … we sat and ordered food and we were very
happy …. Suhaib was calling Omar saying: I am coming down … but I am eating only salad … on
leaving the restaurant we found a mirror where we stood and took many pictures …. Suhaib
performed the Ishaa prayer …. Finished... We went out to find 3 men standing right before us
… asking us for ID's… phones … and telling us to ride with them a microbus …. At first I
thought we were getting kidnapped …. I tried a lot to ask them to let me call my parents but in
vain … behind me was Omar and Suhaib blindfolded … I asked the person who looked in
charge what shall I call him … he said his name was Hussam Farag … I asked him about his job
title … he laughed saying am a police officer and asked me to keep quiet …. after two minutes,
he asked me to cover my eyes with my scarf … but the scarf was short … Suhaib took off his T-
shirt and asked the officer to give it to me to cover my eyes with it.

(4) 15 days in the State Security Prosecution
Investigations … voices of torture … men screaming … Suhaib and Omar were sent away …
while I was left alone … no other girls around … 15 days have passed by and I'm still
blindfolded … threatened … terrorized … I don't know how to describe it … it's a daunting
experience … I kept saying to myself during the first five days that the might send me back
home anytime … by the sixth day I have given up … crying all the time … feeling helpless …
imagining it's not real … it was like the grave torture we've been told of … I don't know … I
thought about my parents … how are they feeling now that they can't find me anywhere … I
prayed … and prayed …. and prayed … had nothing but to pray and cry … I can't explain … by
the fifteenth day they deported me … then I found myself in the Supreme State Security
Prosecution .. 18 continuous hours of investigation... questions revolved around my whole life
… I still wasn't able to figure out what's happening … 16 days without having a proper bath …
my injured legs seem to be failing me ( I was shot with a bullet to my spinal cord which caused
me temporary paralysis and I still suffer from this injury and limping) … I said to him:" Please,
let me talk to my parents" … the prosecutor said to me that I will be deported to prison today
and that the investigations should carry on afterwards.
(5) Qanater prison
I'm dressed up in trousers, blouse, cardigan and short scarf and hijacked with at least two
boys... charges against me is joining the Brotherhood..... Providing them with supplies …
fabricating news inside and outside Egypt … what nonsense?! Who am I originally?! Well then
all these charges aren't real and I have never committed any of them … I entered the prison …
the first time to see a lot of people and women... I was sent to the ward "new revenue"... had no
clothes but the despicable prison outfit which the prosecutor told me later that it's called
"shell" ... couldn't stop crying and still can't .. I am very fragile in fact, and crying all the time …
I feel so dirty for being deprived of bathing for 17 days... My family knew that I am in Qanater
prison and they visited me again on the first of Ramadan..... Praise to Allah..... Praise to Allah …
Praise to Allah … I felt as if Allah brought me back from the dead ... it was a nightmare... A
different world … trapped with criminals charged with narcotics, prostitution, thefts and
embezzlements or what lies in the same category … weird faces … unbelievable stories … as if
they were monsters …. Every one snitching on the other … hate each other … want to harm
each other in any way … smoking ladies … prison is a very very very bad place to be at ….. I
hate prison … when I fell of sleeping I wake up terrified asking myself where I am?!! I feel all
the time I'm trapped in a nightmare … how was I brought here …. All that happened and still ….
I want to go back home …. I stayed 9 days in the revenue and after that I was deposited to the
Brotherhood ward … neither me or any member of my family were known to be a part of the

Brotherhood …… the good thing in their ward is "no cigarettes" unlike the first ward … the
ward has lots of cockroaches … things are hard … I miss my house … miss my family … miss my
friends … miss Woody a lot … I want to go home.
(6) And life guide us in lights at the end of the tunnel... Invites us to forget the pain we have
lived
I don't know what is happening.... But every day and every time I pray ... Lord is generous ... I
am very mad at Egypt... At everything... But every day in prison I keep hoping it's the day they
tell me I'm going home ... because I'm really mad ... I wish this nightmare to end …. I feel so
vulnerable and I can't really write … but I wanted to tell my story although I don't understand
most of it but I'm waiting for good news anytime …. Oh Allah … I love my Mom and Dad ….
Love my friends very dearly … Oh Allah bestow upon me only the good.
(7) Release
Now while I'm writing the news of the evacuation for Samar al-Najjar and Aunt Farida has
been announced ... I feel so happy and I have the feeling that I might be next very soon … lots
of praise to Allah and I wish the same for myself …. I had enough.

The sentences issued during the study period
(1) The first execution of an entire family (Pilgrim Samia Shannan and her two sons)...
- Giza Criminal Court on February 2, confirmed in 2015, the death sentence against 188
detainees whose papers had been referred on Tuesday, December 2nd to Mufti; to take the
legitimate opinion in their execution, allegedly accused in the case of storming Kerdasa police
station in Giza, killing an officer, following the resolution of Rabia and Nahda sit-in , in August
2013, among those sentenced to death , the pilgrim " Samia Habib Mohammed Shanan "
detained from her home in Kerdasa during the famous break in , in August last year.
The first woman sentenced to death in her presence. The pilgrim Samia Shanan 54 -year-old
was arrested from her home on 09.19.2013; to put pressure on her two sons to surrender,
after an attempt by the forces to arrest them and did not find them. Her sons delivered
themselves up to the police station where they were surprised to find their mother involved in
the case number "12749", she was then carried over to the prison. It is worth mentioning , that
the death penalty did not include the pilgrim Samia only , but also included both her sons and
have them in the same case , and is thus also the first rule of the execution of the full family
(mother and children ) .

The pilgrim Samia is one of the Egyptian women who have suffered continuous violations until
the moment, her hands are cuffed from behind each time she goes down to trial hearings , as
well as being battered while being in police stations , after every show on the court .
Pilgrim Samia faced a systematic psychological warfare that tells us abour it former detainee
Ayaat Hamada saying: "Mama Samia was a mother to us, when she laughed our faces used to
light up with a smile, two of her children got arrested and untold violations occurred to them.
Mama Samia is an old lady not strong enough to be locked all this period... in addition to the
insults she is treated with in prison, such as (when are we going to pray at your funeral?) ..
(Why do you pray ... you kill and then go praying?!) And I could see her tears come down
every day before dawn, and mumbling prayers to God, by that time I realized the extent of
injustice inflicted on us and I felt it; because I was in such a position... each session she came
back to us covered with the beating traces all over her body."
Today, "Shannon" wears red clothes, sitting in a small single room do not talk to anyone, and
all her wishes in life now is to see her eldest son, who shared her the same death penalty and
red clothes.
