Parenting is hard, and motivating your children to own their responsibilities is especially difficult. Yelling, grounding, and taking things away can work in the short-term, but those methods rarely create long-lasting habits. When used correctly, positive reinforcement, feedback and support can successfully build productive, long-term habits in children.
HighScore House motivates children through positive reinforcement by adding a game layer to the household. By completing tasks and fulfilling their responsibilities, children earn stars that are used as currency in an economy of rewards. Rewards can include privileges like TV time or choosing the menu for dinner, and monetary rewards like cellphone minutes, game subscriptions, toys and more.
By introducing a formal set of rules, presented as a game, parents create consistency and structure in their homes. Children feel empowered to earn rewards and are self-directed in their actions, choosing and exploring which rewards to work towards next. This structure helps children see beyond the moment, developing habits of delayed gratification and goal-setting while encouraging open dialogue in the family.
