I have developed world class technical experience during my tenure at IBM. As a Software Engineer
and Pre-Sales Specialist, I developed a diversified range of skill sets that have garnered both distinction and

Duke’s unique curriculum is specifically tailored to meet my educational requirements. First, the foursemester structure of the program will expose me to a broad array of courses cultivating fundamental business
analysis skills. Second, the Strategy concentration curriculum with international strategy, strategy
implementation, and international operations management will allow me to develop in- depth knowledge
preparing me well for my immediate aspirations of Strategic Consulting. In addition, this coursework will
enhance my intellectual understanding of global business models and strategy, which will serve my long term
aim of leading a multinational corporation. Duke also boasts an extremely dynamic international student body,
allowing me to learn among leaders from all over the world and understand cultural similarities and differences.
Moreover, in order to supplement my intellectual development with practical consulting training, I will
participate in Duke’s Deloitte Case Competition. Coupled with my business-oriented aims, I also aspire to

All throughout my education, I was an active member of the student body, and partook in several
extracurricular activities, especially philanthropic efforts that help the surrounding community. [During my
time as a learner, I did many things outside of school, especially volunteering or helping charities in the
community.] In high school I organized two busloads of volunteers from my school to gift clothing and other
items to impoverished children in a small town in Bosnia, where the effects of the civil war was still readily
apparent. [In high school I organized two buses full of people to donate clothes and other things to poor

Having been raised on multiple continents certainly makes me a good fit for international topics, but that is not
the only reason. [Growing on many continents makes me good for international topics, but there are more

My plan for study during the two years is as follows:

of society. The challenges faced by a developing economy require competent, knowledgeable, and outside-thebox thinkers. Unique problems require unique solutions. In an increasing globalized world, leaders cannot
afford to be narrow-minded, or unaware of the world around them. After I obtain my Bachelor’s degree, I plan
to extend my formal education through graduate school. My long term goal is to become either the Minister of
Finance or the Minister of Economic Development of my nation – both are relevant to my aspirations. Perhaps
one day I could even become the President of the World Bank or the International Monetary Fund, who knows?
The ultimate goal is to be an agent for positive change in my country and the world.
The funding for my education will come from various sources. First off, I have been granted a generous
merit scholarship from the university I plan to attend. The Office of International Education has an established
fund to be used for qualified international students to discount the tuition fee. This has encouraged me greatly
to not squander this opportunity that not everyone is afforded. My diligence and perseverance in high school
seems to have paid off, allowing me to reap the benefit of this grant to lower the cost of my education. This
scholarship will offset most of the tuition. To supplement the rest, I have secured a student loan from my bank.
I am confident in my ability to be a successful student and pay back the loan after graduating.
I plan to attend this university to receive a world-class education abroad. After graduating, I have every
intention to use what I have learned for the improvement of my home country and people. The strong bond I
have to my family and my friends is my main motivation to become a force for good. There can be lots of
problems caused by the friction of rapid structural changes in society, especially regarding economics, politics,
and culture. Proper understanding, management, and anticipation of these changes can ensure smooth, stable
transitions into modernity.

On an unknown day late in the thirteenth century, an unidentified hand clumsily cut away part of the
text from the most politically sensitive section of The Secret History of the Mongols. The censored portion
recorded words spoken by Genghis Khan in the summer of 1206 at the moment he created the Mongol Empire
and gave shape to the government that would dominate the world for the next 1500 years. Though oversight or
malice, the censor left a single short sentence of the mutilated text that hinted at what had been removed: ―Let
us reward our female offspring.‖

In the preceding section of the text, Genghis Khan bestowed offices, titles, territories, and vassals upon
his sons, brothers, and other men according to their ability and contribution to his rise to power. But at the
moment where the text reported that he turned to the assembly to announce the achievements and rewards of his
daughters, the unknown hand struck his words from the record. The censor, or possibly a scribe copying the
newly altered text, wrote the same short final sentence twice. Perhaps the copyist was careless in repeating it, or
perhaps the censor deliberately sought to emphasize what was missing or even to taunt future generations with
the mystery of what had been slashed away.
More than a mere history, document known as The Secret History of the Mongols recorded the words of
Genghis Khan throughout his life as he founded the Mongol nation, gave his people their basic laws, organized
the administration, and delegated powers. It served as the biography of a tribe and its leader as well as the
national charter or constitution of the nation that grew into a world empire. Only the most important members
of the royal family had access to the manuscript, and therefore it acquired its name.

I didn’t do much crying when I was young.

I distinctly remember one of our rare but highly anticipated family ―TV-tray dinner nights‖ at home.[I

Robert Munsch, a story I didn’t have to pretend to be excited to read, as the memory of my own mother reading
it to me sparked my curiosity.[The last time I was babysitting for the Todd house, the girls picked a book for
their bedtime story like usual; this time, they picked Love You Forever by Robert Munsch. I was genuinely
excited to read this, because I remember my mother used to read it to me, so I was interested. (It was her
favorite book; I didn’t love it all that much.)[It was my mother’s favorite book, but I didn’t love the book like
she did.) As I began reading, I felt like I was back in my parents’ king-sized bed listening to my mother’s voice
tell the story: A new mother, struggling every day with her ornery toddler, enters his room at night while he’s
fast asleep, rocks him in her arms, and sings him this song: ―I’ll love you forever, I’ll like you for always; as
long as I’m living, my baby you’ll be.‖(When I began reading, I felt like how I felt when I was a kid, when used
to listen to my mother read this story in my parent’s large bed: the story was about a new mother of an unruly
toddler, a mother who went into her toddler’s room at night while he’s sleeping, cradled him in her arms, and
sang this to her toddler: “I’ll love you forever, I’ll like you forever; as long as I live, you will be my baby.” I
sang it aloud to the girls in the same tune my mother had made up when I was a little four-year old girl, their
eyes opening wider at what they perhaps naively thought was a pretty singing voice. [I sang this song to the
girls the same way my mother used to sing to me when I was four years old; the girls’ eyes opened wider,
maybe they thought my poor singing was good.] The story repeats, the mother coming into her son’s room at
night to rock him in her arms as he grows to be a teenager and even a young man living on his own. [The same
story is told, the mother goes into her son’s room at night to cradle him in her arms, when he is a teenager, and
even a young adult living by himself.] The mother calls her son, now a father, to come see her when she is very
sick.[Her son is now a father, and she calls him to come see her when she is very sick.] He drives to his
