St Nicholas Day (6th
December). On the evening
of Dec 5th children clean
their shoes or boots and
leave them by the door,
then go to sleep waiting for
“Mos Nicolae” to fill them
with presents! (If you were
naughy, you get a rod!)
Christmas & NYE Caroling
In rural areas, carolers still wear
traditional costumes. Some have
bells, whips, and drums and make
noise to dispel the evil spirits.
Some of them also wear masks
symbolizing diverse animals such
as bears, goats, and horses, which
represent the evil forces.

MARTISOR AND EASTER
Mărțișor is celebrated on March 1st. The name
Mărțișor means “Little March” (“Martie”). It is
believed that the person who wears the red and
white silky string would enjoy a prosperous and
healthy year. It’s a symbol of spring, fertility and the
revival of nature.
The Easter holiday follows the
Orthodox calendar (often
different from the Easter date
established by other Christian
churches).
Easter Egg decorating is an art
form in Romania, with impressive
craftsmanship passed on from
generation to generation.
It is also customary for people to
knock eggs during Easter.

TRANSFAGARASAN
Approx 100 miles long, the
Transfagarasan Highway is Romania’s
most spectacular road and, thanks to
an appearance on BBC Top Gear in
2009, now one of its most popular
tourist attractions. The road’s highest
point is at 2042 metres.
