A polar living in horrible conditions in Argentina has gained the support from the global community. Arturo, a 28-year-old polar bear, living in sweltering, dirty conditions in the Mendoza Zoo. There is a petition with over a half million signatures to move the bear to Canada. Check out this presentation for more info...
1. In
a
stunning
example
of
the
internet’s
power
for
good,
an
online
pe77on
to
save
a
polar
bear
has
gone
viral.
2. The
pe77on’s
purpose
is
to
encourage
the
Argen7nian
president,
Cris7na
Fernández
de
Kirchner,
to
use
her
authority
to
send
the
long
suffering
animal
to
the
Assiniboine
Park
Zoo
in
Winnipeg,
Canada.
4. Amassing
over
500,000
signatures,
the
pe77on
has
gained
support
from
ac7vists,
celebri7es
and
poli7cians
—
all
moved
by
the
saddening
images
and
videos
coming
out
of
Argen7na.
5. However,
the
Mendoza
Zoo
asserts
that
the
bear
is
too
old
and
sickly
to
travel
under
anesthesia.
6. The
bear’s
inclosure
is
reportedly
filthy
with
stagnant
water
not
nearly
deep
or
clean
enough
for
the
bear
to
swim.
7. Also,
there
is
no
aPempt
to
alleviate
the
sweltering
temperatures
the
bear
lives
in.
8. Regularly
geRng
hoPer
than
95
degrees,
Argen7na
is
far
from
the
natural
habitat
of
polar
bears,
who
have
a
double
layer
of
fur.
10. The
Assiniboine
Park
Zoo
has
recently
opened
it’s
Interna7onal
Polar
Bear
Conserva7on
Centre
[sic],
and
is
fully
willing
to
accept
the
animal
and
be
responsible
for
it’s
care.
11. The
Canadian
Food
Inspec7on
Agency
requires
rigorous
documenta7on
in
order
to
import
such
an
animal,
including
at
least
3-‐
years
of
medical
history,
which
the
Mendoza
Zoo
apparently
doesn’t
have
or
is
unwilling
to
share.
12. Arturo
is
the
last
living
polar
bear
in
cap7vity
in
Argen7na.
13. A
polar
bear
died
in
Buenos
Ares
in
2012
due
to
heat,
which
caused
controversy
in
the
interna7onal
zoological
community
and
brought
Arturo’s
plight
to
many
people’s
aPen7on.
14. Now,
with
new
images
and
videos
of
Arturo
pouring
out
online,
there
is
a
renewed
commitment
to
rescue
and
rehabilitate
the
elderly
bear.
15. Aer
the
Assiniboine
Park
Zoo
learned
that
the
Mendoza
Zoo
deemed
Arturo
unfit
for
travel,
they
offered
to
visit
the
facility
in
Argen7na
to
check
on
Arturo’s
health
and
make
recommenda7ons
for
his
care.
16. Travel
arrangements
had
been
made
but
the
Mendoza
Zoo
cancelled
at
the
last
minute
and
has
not
offered
a
7me
to
reschedule.
17. Many
public
figures
have
joined
the
campaign,
signing
the
online
pe77on
and
speaking
out
in
favor
of
Arturo’s
reloca7on
to
Canada.
18. Actresss
Olivia
Munn
and
poli7cian
Newt
Gingrich
have
spoken
out,
taking
to
TwiPer
to
voice
their
concerns
for
Arturo’s
well
being.
19. As
of
now,
Arturo’s
fate
rests
in
the
hands
of
the
officials
at
the
Mendoza
Zoo
and
the
Argen7nian
government.
20. President
Cris7na
Fernández
de
Kirchner
surely
must
be
aware
of
the
situa7on
and
hopefully
she
will
do
what’s
right
and
take
execu7ve
ac7on.
