We are definitely in the “Dog Days of Summer.” The ancient
Greeks noticed that when the star of Sirius (known as the “Dog
Star” and the brightest proper star in the night sky) came into view,
it coincided with the hottest portion of the summer. Usually
starting in mid-July, this hot season can last until mid-September in
the Northern Hemisphere.
Coincidentally, most businesses and organizations slow down during
this season as well. People go on vacations. Productivity falls. Life
slows down.
But only for a moment: soon life will pick-up its pace again as
students return to school, people catch-up on work, and the world
prepares for a whirlwind rush to the end of the year.
The same thing happens in the church. As the world aims for a
post-COVID Fall season, the church does the same. Sermon Series,
Bible Studies, Fellowship Events, and new ministries are currently
being dreamed up and prepared for. Summer Projects are in the
works as we continue to repair and restore the tile roofs of our
facility.
I hope that you are enjoying your “Dog Days” of summer…and I
pray that we will be ready for a Fall Season that moves us forward
into a bright new future. We are grateful for times of restoration
and re-creation; even as we look forward to the work that God has
for us.
In Christ,
Pastor Steve
2. August 7 Unexpected Guests Luke 12:32-40
Most people love to entertain guests, so long as they have been invited and the time of their arrival is known. What
about unexpected guests? Do we enjoy entertaining guests who arrive unannounced, uninvited, and at
inconvenient hours? Why then does Jesus insist that he will come at an unexpected hour?
August 14 Difficult Choices
Jesus tells his disciples that they will have to make some difficult choices for the Kingdom of God. What difficult
choices do we have to make?
August 21 Grace Breaks Out
We all have our boxes in which we try to contain and control God. But Jesus refuses to let God remain in the boxes
of the Pharisees…and God won’t remain in the boxes we have created either.
August 28 The Way of Humility Luke 14:1, 7-14
In a world of likes, followers, and platforms, what does Jesus’ teaching on humility have to say to us?

Summer Sermon Series from the Gospel of Luke
What might we learn if we took the risk to listen? If we took the risk to let
these holy ones of God become our traveling companions on our summer
journey? We might be troubled, and we will be, but we might also be lifted up.
We might be challenged, but we might find reasons for hope, or we might find
a renewed vision that inspires us for all the journeys we make. So, what do you
say? Are you up for a journey this summer, a journey to the edge of our faith?

4. You are invited to an All-Church Meeting to
discuss The Wesley School’s proposal to place a
motorized gate and guardhouse at the entrance
to the South Parking Lot. Such a project will have
a large impact upon the appearance of the
church but may also make the campus safer and
improve hospitality during school hours. The gate
could also be left opened for church functions
and during Sunday morning worship activities.
The Governing Board agreed that a larger
conversation with the entire congregation would
help us make a decision which represented the
consensus of the congregation. So make plans to
be there!
Calling all singers! Choir will be coming back on
Saturday, September 10th, with our fall choral
retreat in the Main Sanctuary!
From 11am-3pm we will come together to
develop our skills as singers, learn some new
music, and share a meal! All are welcome!
If, you have been singing all your life, have never
sung before, or are anywhere in between this is
the choir for you!
We will take the time during this retreat to learn
some of the foundations of singing, get a head
start on some great new music, and bring
together the 2022-2023 NoHo FUMC choir!
I hope to see lots of new and familiar faces there!
After a successful summer of Pride Pop-Ups and
Justice Sings, Voices for Social Justice will be
hosting their very first concert event, Lay Down
Your Weapons. Led by NoHo FUMC music
director Michael McKenzie and church member
Kait Ahlschwede, this program speaks to the ways
gun violence impacts our youth communities and
highlights the movements leading the push for
gun reform in our country. The concert will begin
at 7:30 pm at Los Altos United Methodist
Church in Long Beach, CA.”
5. Hope of the Valley is Always Expanding
Thirteen years ago Hope of the Valley’s humble
beginnings began with handing out sandwiches from
the trunk of a car. Now they are operating over 16
shelter locations (including 6 Tiny Home Villages, 3
Family Shelters, a Youth Shelter, 2 Bridge Housing
Shelters and the Trebek Center in Northridge).
In the last 12 months alone, they have added seven
shelters with over 900 beds (Six Tiny Home
Villages, and the 107-bed Trebek Center which
opened in April). This year they will be opening 3
New Family Shelters for families with children. With
over 300 beds, these shelters will serve couples and
single mothers and fathers with children.
The dedicated team of chefs, kitchen staff and
drivers prepare and distribute 3 meals a day to
residents at these 16 different shelters located
throughout the San Fernando Valley and Great Los
Angeles area. And they have been doing all of the
food preparation in a 400-square foot kitchen!
They have outgrown their kitchen. To help meet the
growing demand, they need to build a new kitchen.
The new kitchen will be centrally located at their
North Hills Administrative Building and will cost $2
Million.
Hope begins with a hot meal. Hope of the Valley
needs help to open the new kitchen and continue
serving meals to the unhoused families and
neighbors.
Any size donation helps.
Equal sacrifice, not equal gifts.
To donate, you can mail a check to:
Hope of the Valley, P.O. Box 7609, Mission
Hills, CA 91346
Or, go to www.hopeofthevalley.org
Click on “Donate” and fill in the blanks
In addition to donating non-perishable food
and/or making monetary donations to the
Pantry, you could help by being on the
Transportation Team. To volunteer, you need to
go to the Pantry website – www.nhifp.org.
At the website you need to scroll down a little
bit until you see “Click here to sign up”. A click
takes you to the Sign-Up Genius. Here you sign
up to go to Temple Beth Hillel (12326 Riverside
Drive) on a Friday afternoon at 4 pm. At TBH
you and 5 others will bring packed food bags up
from the basement in the elevator on carts.
Then you will load the bags into pantry-owned
vehicles. You then will drive yourself or be
driven to First Christian Church (on the corner
of Colfax and Moorpark) to help unload the
bags into the Pantry distribution center.
This whole process takes about an hour. If you
can, sign up a family member or friend to
volunteer with you. You could do it just once,
once a month, every week, or whatever works
for you.
