Happy New Year!
In popular culture right now, we hear a lot about resolutions. I am not
opposed to resolutions. But it is not where I focus each January. Rather, I
get eager to live into the season of Epiphany. Epiphany is the season
between Christmas and Lent. Depending on the date of Ash Wednesday,
which is the beginning of Lent, it can be anywhere between four and nine
Sundays (this year it is six Sundays). Epiphany includes the story of the
wise men who have their own “epiphany” in recognizing that the star in
the sky isn’t just any old star, but points to the long awaited Messiah.
We have a long standing Epiphany tradition in our home. It started when
our children were little. We got a large glass mason jar and cut up strips of
yellow paper. We put a light in the jar. Every night when we gathered at
the dinner table, we would each share at least one answer to the following
question: “Where did you see God today?” We would write our answers
on the yellow paper and stick it in the jar. By the end of Epiphany, the jar
would be full. More importantly, our eyes would be more open to the
movement of God, and that is a very good way to start a new year.
I love The Message translation of Romans 12:1-2. May these words guide
you this new year:
So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—
your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God
as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him.
Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking.
Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily
recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around
you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of
you, develops well-formed maturity in you.
May you see God movement in the world and that let shape you and form
you in this new year.
Grace & Peace,
Pastor Chamie
2. January 7 Beginning Again...an Again...and... Mark 1:9-20
Read Mark 1: Jesus’ ministry begins with his baptism followed by him calling the first disciples. But Jesus
doesn’t call just once. The new year isn’t the only opportunity to begin again. Each dawn that we awake
with God is a new beginning.
January 14 Forgiveness is Possible Mark 2:1-17
Read Mark 2: Jesus is good at getting into trouble with the religious leaders who want to put limits on who
can be forgiven. But Jesus casts a big net when it comes to forgiveness.
January 21 Church is Family Mark 3:31-35
Read Mark 3: Jesus was born into a family. Yet Jesus also noted that family was bigger than biology. The
church is to be a family, which is sometimes very challenging, but also very fulfilling.
January 28 Good Planting Mark 4:1-20
Read Mark 4: Jesus tells the parable of a farming planting seed. But this isn’t a garden how-to story. It is
really a story about the planting of God’s Word. How are we letting the words of God shape and form
us?
February 4 Jesus Still Heals Mark 5:21-48
Read Mark 5: In short order, Jesus calms a storm, casts a demon from a man, and heals Jairus’ daughter.
The stories of old help to remind us that Jesus still has the power to calm our storms, chase away our
demons, and restore us to life in new and meaningful ways.
February 11 Feeding the Hungry Mark 6:30-44
Read Mark 6: The disciples first reaction to a crowd of hungry people is a “scarcity reaction,” meaning
they don’t think there is enough to help. Yet Jesus takes 5 loaves and 12 fish and in Jesus’ hands, it is more
than enough.
Epiphany 2024
On Christian calendars, the season between Christmas
and Lent is known as Epiphany. What is an “epiphany?”
One way to describe it is having a “light bulb moment”
where something suddenly makes sense. As we begin
2024, how might we see more clearly who God is and how
God is moving in the world? During Epiphany and Lent,
we will slowly be reading through the Gospel of Mark.
Every church member is invited to pick up their own copy
of the gospel at church. You can mark it up any way you
wish, maybe underlining passages that speak to you or
writing a question mark by something you wonder about.
You can fill the blank pages with written prayers or
artwork or your own notes. Perhaps we will have some
epiphanies as we read together, getting to know Jesus more
and more.

Bible & Blue Zones
A Zoom Bible Study Led by Pastor Chamie
Tuesdays, 7:00-8:00 PM,
January 16 through February 6
The new year is a time when people make resolutions
about health and wellness. How might our faith, the
Bible, and health all intertwine? The “Blue Zones”
are places in the world where people experience
increased longevity and wellness. Recently, a Blue
Zones documentary series came on Netflix. Pastor
Chamie, who has long followed the Blue Zones and
even longer followed the Bible, will intertwine the two
as we ponder how to live wisely and well in 2024.
