I am still processing my time on the 2022 AIDS/Lifecycle Ride. As
an update, I managed to raise $5,847.00 to support the LGBT
Center of Los Angeles and the AIDS Foundation in San Francisco.
Together, the ride raised close to 18 million dollars! I am humbled
to be a pat of such a generosity, and am grateful that I can use my
hobby to make a difference in our world.
Fundraising aside, I didn’t know what to expect regarding the
company of over 2,000 riders, the supporting crews for our meals,
showers, bicycle maintenance, and tent village. But here is what i
found out: in a diverse group of people, letting people be who they
are, creates a community of love and freedom. People were kind,
helpful, supportive, and joyful. I had one of the best experiences I
have ever had, and am grateful for all the encouragement and
support I received. Who knows? I might just do it again next year!
As we begin July and the second0half of 2022 at NOHO FUMC,
we will spend some time talking about what it means to do God’s
work in the world around us...which honestly, isn’t a new topic.
However, borrowing the language of Jesus, “The harvest is great,
but the laborers are few.” What are we being called to do? Who are
we being called to reach?
I am honored to begin my fifth year in ministry with you all. In four
years, we have re0organized our church leadership, created an
accounting system which gives us the ability to transparently track
and manage our spending, started a major capital project on our
roofs, and oh yeah, managed to make it to the other side of a
world-wide pandemic without losing major portions of our
congregation.
We have much to be grateful for...but we also have more work to do.
I pray that together, we will see what God can do when people step
forward faithfully to discover their power and their potential.
Peace,
Pastor Steve
2. July 3 Power & Potential Luke 10:1-11, 16-20
Jesus sends 70 of his followers out into surrounding villages and places to proclaim the gospel and to heal the
sick...and in doing so, they discover their power and potential for God’s work. What kind of potential and power
do we have to God’s work today?

Won’t You Be My Neighbor?
We know the story of the Good Samaritan and use that story to suggest that we should do good things for
strangers. But the story goes deeper into what it will take for the world to meet God’s intentions for it: to love your
enemies. Who are you willing to have as your neighbor?
July 17 Measuring Up
The plumb line is an ancient tool, used to measure how straight an object stands. The Prophet Amos says that
God has measured Israel’s leaders and fund them wanting...how do we measure up?
July 24 Pray Like This Luke 11:1-13
The disciples ask Jesus to teach them how to pray, and he honos their request. What can we learn about prayer
from this lesson?
July 31 Guarding Against Greed Luke 12:13-21
Jesus tells a parable about a rich man and his stuff...and how greed has a way of creeping into our lives
and becoming an idol. In a world where certain politicians and economists insist that greed is good, how
do we guard ourselves against greed?

UMCOR remains invested in the long-term recovery of survivors of the storm events of 2021 and
earlier while also standing fully prepared to assist with the needs of tomorrow because of the
commitment of people like you.
In 1940, the Methodist Committee on Overseas Relief (now UMCOR) was born. For more than 80
years, partners have been serving as the hands, feet and face of Jesus Christ to the suffering, exploited
and displaced in the U.S. and around the world.
UMCOR is helping people at risk in nearly 50 countries worldwide and continues to rebuild Haiti after
the August 2021 earthquake and to support survivors of U.S. disasters, including the record-breaking
Western wildfires and Kentucky’s winter 2021 tornadoes.
Your support ensures UMCOR will be there tomorrow to restore hope and dignity of hurting people
across the street and around the globe. If you donate by check or money in an envelope, be sure to
indicate that the money is for Ukraine, International Disaster Response, U.S. Disaster Response or
UMCOR Where Most Needed.
United Methodist Committee on Relief Disaster Response
By Lynn Yoshizumi
Sadly, millions of people are on the move. Not by choice, but by force. The United Methodist Committee
on Relief (UMCOR) is providing food, water, medicine, shelter and transportation to Ukrainians and
others seeking safety both within Ukraine and in neighboring countries.
Relief has made its way to those sheltering in Ukrainian cities such as Kyiv, Lviv, Odessa, Uzhhorod and
Zaporizhzhia. And for the millions who have gone to Poland, Hungary, Moldova, Slovakia, Estonia and
the Czech Republic, UMCOR is supporting the ministries of local Methodist churches and partnering
organizations faithfully welcoming refugees.
With the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season already begun,, UMCOR also stands ready to respond to
whatever needs tomorrow may bring.
Juneteenth Celebration Pop-Up
This year, we celebrated Juneteenth as a
congregation, with the help of our African
and African-American church families!
Fried chicken, red beans & rice, plantains,

We learned more about the holiday during
worship with a special moment by Norman
& Sherri and they brought in Libeck Vieten
for special music.
We can’t wait to do it again!

6. The Rev. Dr. Joey K. McDonald Education Grant Fund
We are now accepting applications for the The Rev. Dr. Joey Macdonald Educational grant for the
2022-2023 school year. The McDonald Family formed the scholarship fund in memory of Rev. Dr. Joey
McDonald, who passed away after 28 years of ministry at North Hollywood First United Methodist
Church. This fund provides Education Grants for people working towards a college degree. The grants
will be issued up to the amount of $1,000.00 per year, per student, until the fund is exhausted.
The Education Grant is a non-competitive grant. It carries no academic requirement or financial need
threshold.
To qualify the student must meet the following criteria:
1. The student must be a member or related to an active church member or active constituent of
North Hollywood First United Methodist Church.
2. The student must be seeking a college-level degree (associate, bachelor, master, or doctorate). This
must be their first degree at each level. Students seeking a second bachelor or master degree will
not be eligible.
3. The student must be actively enrolled at a regionally accredited college or university in the United
States.
4. A student may continue to apply through the progression of their education (associate to bachelor
to master to doctorate).
To apply for the grant students must submit a written request by July 1st of the grant year. Applications
may be downloaded from www.nohofumc.org. The application will include applicant’s personal contact
information, relationship to North Hollywood FUMC, educational goals, and verification of enrollment.
The grants will be awarded by September 15th each year. The grant checks will be sent directly to the
school before the Fall term. Students are welcome to reapply for a grant in the subsequent grant year.
The family formed the educational grant fund to support students pursuing post-secondary education, a
cause about which Dr. McDonald was very passionate. The fund was established with donations from
friends and family who wished to memorialize him. If you want to donate to the fund, please contact the
church office for details of the J.K. McDonald Memorial Fund.
On Saturday, June 11th, we hosted our first Justice Sing with Voices for Social
Justice. We were happy with the 50+ people in attendance, some who drove
from long distances (Thousand Oaks and Las Vegas).
We enjoyed dinner in the Lounge, followed by a panel discussion, in the Main
Sanctuary. Panelist: Lindsey Krause, Darita Seth, Kate Ahlschewde, and our
choir director, Michael McKenzie, shared informative dialogue to help us
understand more about the LGBTQIA+ community and why it is important for
us to be allies and support. On Sunday, June 12 & 26, Voices for Social Justice
hosted a PRIDE POP UP in our courtyard! Handing out free craft kits.
