“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, and give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the
will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, NRSV
In October of 1735, John and Charles Wesley boarded a sailing ship and set
sail to the American colonies to do ministry among the colonists as well as
the natives. Moravian Bishop David Nitschman was also on board the ship
with twenty-six other Moravian missionaries. During the long journey, John
Wesley became acquainted with the Moravian community. During a
particular storm where Wesley feared for his life, he noticed that the
Moravians gathered for prayer and how they kept their composure. He was
impressed by their ability to express thanks to God, even in the middle of a
violent storm; and he longed to have the kind of peace and deep faith they
possessed.
This experience had a profound impact on Wesley and his understanding
about what a faithful Christian looks like. Years later, when he would be
writing about the Character of a Christian, “Giving Thanks” and “Praying
without ceasing” were two of the five marks.
I think most of us find “praying without ceasing” to be a challenge, but also
think that we are more or less capable of praying regularly throughout the
day. But giving thanks in every circumstance? How can one be grateful
when your world is falling apart, or the storms of life are crashing over your
head and threatening to drown you?
Such giving of thanks may seem impossible, yet it is the very thing which
builds our faith...and if we stop to think about it for a moment, it is the
rhythm of November. The month begins with a celebration of
“All Saints,” when we remember those who have gone before us and gone
from life to life eternal. The scripture reading becomes urgent, telling us to
respond to the gospel and be ready for whatever may come. Then we
celebrate Thanksgiving and begin to prepare for Christ’s arrival...
November is a journey in gratitude and thanks; and as the days grow
shorter and colder, we can practice giving thanks in every circumstance,
even the tough times, and see how our faith grows in depth and strength.
I invite you to join me on this journey of gratitude and thanks. In a world of
pessimism, cynicism, and negativity, let’s start a revolution of gratitude. The
world needs people who will express gratitude, and the world needs people
of faith.
With Gratitude,
Pastor Steve
2. November 6 The Living Dead Luke 20:27-38
We often think of eternal life as something that happens when we die and The Kingdom of God as something we
receive after death. But Jesus proclaims that it is all about the living...eternal life and the Kingdom of God are one
and they are present now!
November 13 Surviving the Storm
Whenever we face hard times or difficulties, we are presented with the choice to keep going or to quit and give up.
But Jesus tells his disciples and us that we have to endure the calamity in order to see salvation.
November 20 The End is the Beginning Luke 23:33-43
We think of death as final; but according to Jesus, death is never the end. God always has the final word, and it is a
word of life!
Advent Series – “How the Grinch Found Christmas”
Does your heart feel a little too small? Are you starting to resemble The Grinch? This Advent season,
we will use Dr. Seuss’s “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” alongside scripture to guide our preparation
for Christ’s birth and see if we can grow our hearts three sizes!
November 27 Everything is Wrong
The Grinch’s heart was two sizes too small...why was it so small? On this first Sunday of Advent, we will consider
the state and size of our own hearts. Have we let our own hearts shrink?
December 4 Mistaking Christmas
The Grinch hated Christmas...why did he think it was so awful? Could it be that he was looking at it the wrong
way? How does our view of Christmas affect our hearts and our season?
December 11 Seeking Light
Every Advent, we can either look at the darkness of the world, or we can watch for the light of God that enters
our world. Are we trying to extinguish the light of Christmas like the Grinch, or are we looking for the light?
December 18 Magnifying Joy
Something causes the Grinch’s heart to suddenly grow...do you remember? We will speak of the joy that Christmas
brings...and ask ourselves how we can magnify it for the world around us.

Make sure that you join us online for our annual
check-in with the District Superintendent! This
meeting includes an overview of our year-in-ministry
and important votes regarding leadership, budget,
and pastoral compensation. Hope to see you there!.
Back in August, the Wesley School approached the church about partnering together to resurrect the
Christmas Tree Lot. After consideration, we have decided to join forces to raise money for charity.
Along the way, we believe that the tree lot raises the profile of the church and the school in the
community, and offers opportunities for church members and school families to work side-by-side and
develop friendship and familiarity.
We will open for business on Saturday, November 26. We will be open Friday – Sunday, with our last day
of business scheduled for December 18. We hope that you will let your friends and family know
that “the tree with a heart” is back in business, raising money for good, locally and globally!
