Dear NoHo First UMC Family,
Our summer season has ended. I spent the nine Sundays of July and August
preaching about what I consider “foundational stones” of being a Christian
community. As we move into these next months, we will continue to live by these nine
rhythms of life:
1. We are rooted and grounded in Jesus Christ. Jesus is our cornerstone.
2. We live by the fruit of the Spirit in the way we treat one another, interact with the
congregation, and move in the world.
3. We “make room on the boat.” In other words, we look at each person in our faith
community as a beloved child of God and make room for those of varying ages,
races, backgrounds, gender, ideas, etc, etc, etc. We pre-admire instead of
prejudge.
4. We live in a posture of grace and practice forgiveness. Grace finds beauty in
everything. Forgiveness is letting go of the anchor of hurt and allowing someone
to be a new person.
5. We have an “abundance mindset” versus a “scarcity mindset.” We trust that God
will provide. We dream big. We don’t let our fears make us live small.
6. We balance stability and adaptability. We honor our roots and our traditions, but
we don’t live by the mantra “we have always done it that way.” We live open to
change and make room for the new things that God is doing.
7. We care for those most in need. Jesus said his followers were to care “for the least
of these.” Whoever is in need inside or outside of our church, we notice. As
Bishop Desmond Tutu said, “Every church should be able to get a letter of
recommendation from the poor in their community.”
8. We nurture the young and the old. We need to get our bookends right so that the
middle stands and we don’t topple over in either direction. Thus we show great
respect and dignity to the elders in our midst. We show great tenderness and
nurture to the children in our midst.
9. We cultivate a life of worship and prayer. We can’t move and grow and be the
people we are called to be without conversing daily with God. And weekly
worship centers us, it reminds us of who we are and Whose we are.
I invite you to ponder these nine rhythms. Which ones are easier for you? Which
ones are more challenging? As you prayerfully read through them, do you feel
God tugging at you, perhaps wanting you to take notice of something?
I also want to invite you to challenge yourself this fall in cultivating a life of
worship and prayer. Since I was a teenager, the rhythm of weekly worship with
the gathered community and the rhythm of daily prayer on my own has fueled
me, sustained me, and transformed me. What might happen in your own life if
these rhythms became a deeper practice for you?
I pray you have a blessed September. And don’t forget - I love having tea and
conversations with the NoHo Family, so just call the church office or drop me an
email at pastorchamie@nohofumc.org if you would like to meet.
Grace & Peace,
Pastor Chamie

with all of creation.

September 17 A Place Under the Shade Tree Micah 4:1-8 | John 14:25-27

September Season of Creation: A Mighty River
We join Methodists, Lutherans, Presbyterians, Catholics, and other Christian Churches all around the world in
celebrating the Season of Creation. This is an introduction from the ecumenical steering team:
Welcome to this year’s Season of Creation...
Each year from September 1 to October 4, the Christian family unites for this worldwide celebration of
prayer and action to protect our common home. As followers of Christ from around the globe, we share a
common call to care for creation. We are co-creatures and part of all that God has made. Our wellbeing is
interwoven with the wellbeing of the Earth.
As a pastor who grew up playing in dirt and climbing trees, and as a pastor who holds a certificate in
horticultural therapy, I have loved celebrating the Season of Creation with the faith communities I have
served. Each Sunday in September, we will dive into the season. Something you may want to consider for the
Season of Creation is a way that you can live more gently on the planet. For example, maybe you give up
single use water bottles for the season or you choose to be more mindful of your energy use or you participate
in an environmental clean up project. It is also a great season to enjoy the beauty of nature with others. You
are also invited to go on a full moon hike, a Delkeskamp Family tradition, as we join NoHo First UMC &
Ascension Lutheran to enjoy the wonder of the rising Harvest Moon on Thursday, September 28.

5. NoHo First UMC & The Wesley School share the same campus. Here are few things we want you to know:
• Even when school is in session, the church is open to you. The West side of the campus,
including the Sanctuary, Lounge, Church Offices, Boyer Chapel and Prayer Chapel, and the Hand in
Hand Room are open to the church family and ministries as needed every day of the week. If you need
to come by the church on a school day for a church or related ministry event or to meet with Pastor
Chamie or any of the church staff, the North Parking Lot is exclusively for the church. You access that
lot off Bakman Road. We will be installing a Ring there so you can buzz the church office after you park
and we will come and let you through the gate. We do have to keep gates locked during the school days
for the safety of the children, but know we are happy to welcome you to campus. This is YOUR
church every day. Pastor Chamie has communicated this with Wesley School and they are supportive.
• Wesley school resumes on Tuesday, September 5. This will be Dr. Julie Galles’ last year as Head of
School. Pastor Chamie and our Director of Program Ministries, Patty Kelsey, meet with the school
administration once a month. In addition, Pastor Chamie is doing a meet and greet with the teaching
staff as well as joining the Wesley community for their annual BBQ before school starts. She and the
church staff are putting together “first week survival kits” for all the Wesley staff. Pastor Chamie
composed a letter of introduction about her and the church to go to all Wesley families. She will be
meeting families as drop-off and pick-up the first week of school. Norman Kelsey currently serves as the
church liaison on the Wesley School Board. Norman and Pastor Chamie will be leading school
“Community” on Monday mornings during the school year. Pastor Chamie encouraged the
congregation when she was preaching on “The Young and the Old” to remember that every weekday
of the school year, there are around 275 children on our campus, so let’s pray for them
this year.
Campus Updates From Pastor Chamie
September Class: Worship 101
Wednesdays, Sept 6, 13, 20, and 27
7:00 PM in Boyer Chapel
Open to Everyone!
Don’t worry - this won’t be some boring required
introductory college class! We are going to go back
to “the heart of worship.” Pastor Chamie - and the
new Director of Music Ministries/Worship Leader
(yet to be determined at this writing) - will be
teaching about all the whys and the whats of
worship, sharing some fascinating worship history,
and exploring studies that show people who
worship on a regular basis actually live longer! We
will also WORSHIP together, meaning there will
be praying and singing (and if you don’t sing, don’t
worry, there will be choir singers around you who
do).
6. Want to learn more about NoHo First UMC?
Interested in becoming a member of the church family?
Come to the new member class on Sunday, October 8,
from 12 noon to 2:00 PM!
We will eat lunch together (lunch is provided). A long time
church member will give you a "behind the scenes tour"
of the church while sharing the church's history. Pastor
Chamie will share some of her hopes and prayers for the
future of the church. You will learn a little bit about
United Methodism as well as what membership in a
Christian community is all about. If you're not a member
and even a little bit curious about membership, come to
the class. You can decide later if you would like to
become an official member of the congregation.
Is God Tugging You
to Help Grow the Church?
We are looking for those interested in serving on the
church leadership board starting in January 2024.
You can find more information and the application
form online, just ask the church office. Applications
are due on October 1.
Pastor Chamie talks about leadership in her "State
of the Church" address that can be seen on our
Youtube channel. You do need to be a member of
our church to apply and our next membership class
is coming up on October 8th.
It is going to be a rewarding adventure!
We are pleased to announce that Kelsey Packman
has been named as our new Director of Music
Ministries/Worship Leader.
Her first Sunday will be September 17. Kelsey is a
classically trained pianist and choir director. In
addition, Kelsey plays guitar and sings and loves to
lead worship.
She is known for her gentle spirit, strong
organizational skills, creative planning, and
inviting leadership in worship. When her husband
isn't traveling, you will also get to meet him on
a Sunday.
Kelsey is excited to be a part of the NoHo First
UMC Family.
7. Wishing you many blessings on your birthday!
