Management and Functional Areas
1. In the light of the system, describe the decisions to be made in the area of strategic planning,
managerial control and operational control? What information would you require to make such
decisions?
Ans. A management information system (MIS) is an organized combination of people, hardware,
communication networks and data sources that collects, transforms and distributes information in an
organization. An MIS helps decision making by providing timely, relevant and accurate information
to managers. The physical components of an MIS include hardware, software, database, personnel
and procedures.
Management information is an important input for efficient performance of various managerial
functions at different organization levels. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is also necessary to study the keys to successful Executive Information System (EIS) development
and operation. Decision support systems would also make the system a complete MIS as it
constitutes a class of computer–based information systems including knowledge–based systems that
support decision–making activities. DSSs serve the management level of the organization and help
to take decisions, which may be rapidly changing and not easily specified in advance. Improving
personal efficiency, expediting problem solving (speed up the progress of problems solving in an
organization), facilitating interpersonal communication, promoting learning and training, increasing
organizational control, generating new evidence in support of a decision, creating a competitive
advantage over competition, encouraging exploration and discovery on the part of the decision
maker, revealing new approaches to thinking about the problem space and helping automate the
managerial processes would make the system a complete MIS.

Preparedness And Logistical Issues Of Emergency...
Preparedness / Logistical Issues It is generally understood that each type of disaster requires a
specific type of response. In the last twenty years floods and storms caused approximately fifty five
percent of all worldwide natural disasters (Leeuw, Vis & Jonkman, 2012). Due to the fact, that
floods are typically preceded by conditions such as heavy rains or high waters, generally it is easier
to predict the possibility of flooding when compared to other natural disasters. Thus, due to the
nature of floods preventive activities may be implemented that may prevent the flood form
occurring. Some common practices such as filling sandbags or the use of dams are prime examples
of preparatory activities. Unfortunately as demonstrated with hurricane Katrina, disaster
preparedness is quite challenging. Logistics aspects of emergency preparedness are of utmost
importance and consist of four phases: planning and preparation; monitoring extreme conditions;
actual flooding; recovery (Leeuw, Vis & Jonkman, 2012). Flood emergency preparedness occurs in
the planning and preparation phase. From previous experiences, emergency plans typically lack
logistical insight. Thus, logistics must be understood and is defines as the process of planning,
implementing and controlling the efficient and cost effective acquisition and delivery of needed
materials from the point of origin to the point of consumption (Leeuw, Vis & Jonkman, 2012). Once
again, the flooding of New Orleans due to hurricane

Emergency Planning : Emergency Management
Emergency Management
Over the last ten years the issue of emergency management has been increasingly brought to the
forefront. This is in response to a number of different events that highlighted the need for effective
emergency management. As disasters ranging from the 911 terrorist attacks to Hurricane Katrina,
underscore the need to have effective emergency management in place at all times. However, with
the changing nature of the different threats requires that the emergency management system undergo
a transformation, where it will eliminate the diverseness and rivalries of the past. This means that
the various tools / tactics to change the situation should be examined and how the different silos
(rivalries) can be resolved. These two factors together will provide administrators with the greatest
insights as to how emergency management can adapt to the various threats in the future.
The Most perplexing problem with Emergency Management is that it's far more reactive than
proactive. What means and measures could change this situation? Reactive emergency response
planning is when you are reacting to what events are occurring. Proactive emergency response
planning is when you are planning ahead for a number of different situations. (Nirumpa) Since the
largest problem to emergency response planning is many of different entities being more reactive to
various incidents; means that a new approach must be taken. Immediately there are two tools /
tactics that can be used to

Information Systems And The Business School
Introduction
Why is introduction MIS the most important class in the business school? Management information
systems is known as one of the most important class in the business school because it helps you to
success in order, function and efficiency. The interesting part about information systems is that
always will give you "The background you need to assess, evaluate, and apply emerging information
systems technology to business." Also, it offers in job security– marketable skills whereas you will
get knowledge in abstraction, systems thinking, experimentation and collaboration. Furthermore,
Management Information Systems (MIS) not only is based on software systems, but also includes
set of business processes and useful resources that work to put the information together from tactical
systems. The entire system is designed to the company to get tactical goals and meet strategies.
Basically, the role of any MIS organization could be compared with the heart of a body. This means
that information is the blood and MIS is the heart. For a good function of the body should be flow
pure blood, because it will help to regulate correctly the brain. MIS has the same role in any
organization, all information is collected from distinct sources to all needed destinations.
Additionally, MIS plays a particular role of information generation, problem identification and
communication because all of this help to improve and take right the decision making.

Transaction Processing Systems ( Tps )
Transaction processing systems (TPS) provide data collection, storage, processing and outputting
functionalities for the core operations of a business. These functions are necessary for operational
managers. In that way the data generated by the TPS answers general business questions and to track
the flow of transactions throughout the business. TPS can keep track of such systems as payroll,
inventory, sales, shipping and other vital business systems. Business intelligence systems have quite
a few systems under their umbrella, they can sometimes be very involved as they identify, extract
and analyze data for various operational needs, principally for decision–making purposes. These
types of information systems may predict future sales patterns, or forecast sales. For example,
financial institutions use business intelligence systems to develop credit risk models that analyze the
number and extent of lending or credit given to various customers. These systems may use various
techniques and formulas to determine the probability of loan defaults.
The first of these systems is the Management information systems (MIS). MIS is a grouping of
systems that middle managers utilize to monitor and control the business and predict future
performance. These systems along with the information from the TPS produce reports that provide
managers with answers to routine questions that have been predetermined. The models that are used
are normally simple Decision–support systems (DSS)

My Statement Of Purpose For My Masters In Management...
This epistle gives me a unique opportunity to pen down my ambition and my Statement of Purpose.
Let me begin by saying that I wish to pursue my masters in Management Information Systems .
People and Technology have been something I have been fascinated about all through my life and
Management Information Systems is an area which brings these two elements together. Information
Systems is clearly at a point where it is set to become indispensable in the current scenario where
Information technology reigns supreme. In my engineering program at Vasavi College of
Engineering, Osmania University, I have studied and analyzed various aspects of the engineering
world. Taking up Mechanical (Production) Engineering at a premier institution helped me ... Show

Very soon I will be heading the project modules of my company. To achieve this, a sound
engineering base along with the nuances of Management Information Systems would help me
perform better. I am more than convinced that Management Information Systems is therefore the
right choice. My aspiration for a Master's in MIS is based on two important factors. One, the
working atmosphere of a vigorously active department with brilliant research facilities will be
helpful in motivating me towards having a competitive base. Second, I have spoken to my
professors, seniors and colleagues about my choice of University and all of them have suggested
Texas A & M University because it is reputable for its research facilities and computing resources.
I bring along a strong grasp of fundamentals, an aptitude for teaching and team work, a zest for
challenges and an enthusiastic desire to learn all that I can. Having developed an analytical mindset
during the course of my under–graduate Engineering degree, a Master's in Management Information
Systems from Texas A & M University would doubly enhance my perception and understanding of
the subject matter. I hope that my background and qualifications are found suitable for an MS in

Creating Two Bad Behavior Of Case And Disease Management...

31266 – Introduction to Information Systems
Autumn –2015
Assignment I
1. Create TWO bad behaviour of Case and Disease Management systems scenarios and explain each
in detail?
The Encyclopaedia of Business, 2nd Edition on the Reference for Business website describes a role
of a management information system as 'a computer system that provides management and other
personnel within an organisation with up–to–date information' (Management Information Systems,
para 4). A bad behaviour scenario is when this system does not meet the intended requirements and
leaves the business less efficient and the customers dissatisfied.
First scenario: A patient suffers from heart disease. Their medical consultation history such as
appointments and follow–up care is taken care of by the case management system and the progress
of their heart disease in managed by the disease management system. The patient moves houses and
thus has a change in address, however this change, due to poor management, has only been recorded
in the disease management system and thus the old address is still active in the case management
system. Confidential health reports are sent to the wrong address due to the incorrect information in
the case management system, unknown to the hospital. This compromises the patient 's medical
privacy and also inconveniences them as they are not receiving their own personal health reports by
mail. Second scenario: A

Amazon Information System Case Study
Amazon Over the years Amazon has been moving up the ladder and using all the resources that they
can to help their company succeed and reach their full potential. Amazon has become multibillion
company and one of the world's largest online retail sellers. Providing a variety of things that keeps
consumers wanting more. They started selling just books and grew into selling clothes all the way
down to car parts. . Making a global platform for individuals and business retailers to sell products
and as well as buy. As time began to move and technology grew so did Amazon, they decided to
update and improve their management information system making their competitors guessing their
next move.
This is why Amazon has been so successful over the years, due to their Management Information
System (MIS). MIS is defined as being a modernized computer system that continues to gather data
from both inside and outside of the organization. So, when it comes to Amazon they have an
advantage over others because they can manage their information in a very effective way. Since
1995 Amazon has been using an information system but as Amazon web service has become a
global platform for individuals and business retailers to sell products and as well as buy. Hey had to
join the train so they decided to update their management information systems. In doing this update
they ended up spending a whopping 200 million dollars on improving their system. The systems that

Data model views the organizational problem as a bundle of data and network of processes. The data
model centres on the organization's data, data–flow paths, processes and files. Data model
summarizes the business view of the data to be stored in the database and how they are accessed in
the new computerised information system. (ISORG bible)
'Data modelling is the process of defining what data is used in an information system or organization
and how that data is organized. With Data model, the design of an information system is concerned
mainly to optimize the data flow in the organization, and lead to new ways to produce, store, process
and exchange data faster, more reliable and secure than previous practices.'

Database management system (DBMS)
A database management system (DBMS) is the interface between the application programs and the
database. Whenever the application program calls for a single data file (e.g. employee gross pay),
the DBMS finds the item in the database under the heading 'payroll' and presents it to the application
program so as to relieve the end user from the burden of understanding where and how the data are
stored.
Database management systems require that the organization acknowledges the strategic role of
information by treating it as a corporate resource. Decision makers need concise, reliable
information about current operations, trends and changes. Data, however are

What Are The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Management...
Sarras (2011) explained that Management Information System (MIS) is an integral system of man
and machine works for quick access of information which facilitates the decision making and
managerial function in the organization dubbed as Information and Decision System and Computer–
Based Information System. MIS influences managerial functions such as marking, finance,
production, and personnel (Haag; Stephen, et. al., 2011). Managers are well updated on the current
development in every aspects of business hence tracking and supervision of functional targets
becomes easier in such a way that information is already available combined with data analysis
which is the great help to manager's essential time. (Pearlson Keri E., Saunders, Carol S., ... Show

No office could function successfully if it had to rely on memory alone to keep track of every
operation. Without records, all structured administration would quickly come to a stop. Records and
more specifically the information they contain are one of the vital resources that an organization
needs to perform its operations effectively. Thus a computerized Information System would wisely
benefit both the administration and the whole organization since the system speeds up the
processing of data, retrieval and storage of information as Razon & Tabili (2005) proposed a
Computerized Student Information System (CSIS) which was vividly depicted in their study. The
Department of Education (DepEd) developed another system called Learning Resource
Management and Development System (LRDMS) and Learner Information System (LIS) to
improve the efficiency, effectiveness, and equitability of educational management in the Philippines.
All information systems in the DepEd are synchronized to regional, division, and school level
(Learners' Information System, 2012). Schools in the Division of Pangasinan I especially the big
schools are still used to the tradition way in keeping records such as Form 137 and Form 138 even

Emergency Operations Center : Emergency Operation Center
Emergency Operations Center
In recent history, nature has displayed its fury on the earth, and on the people residing on it, with
natural disasters such as hurricanes, tornados, tsunamis, etc. When this occurs, there is a need for a
safe and secure location that is utilized to effectively manage emergency response and recovery
activities. This is typically accomplished through the use of an Emergency Operations Center,
otherwise known as an EOC. The EOC is a very important instrument in emergency management
because it allows for vital personnel to coordinate and control response efforts in an emergency.
The emergency operations center is the central point for the gathering and dissemination of
information during a large scale emergency response. An EOC can be a full–time facility, staffed 24
hours a day and 7 days a week, or it may be a temporary location set by its needs. The staffing of an
emergency operations center may slightly vary between EOC's; however, it is commonly made–up
of representatives of departments responding to an incident. Being responsible for the strategic
overview, an EOC is a vital part in emergency preparedness and emergency management
Due to many complexities, in addition to many unknown factors that contribute to disasters,
emergency operation centers come in many shapes and sizes. In general, many small public agencies
do not have available space, manpower, or money to develop a permanent EOC, and therefore
commonly set up makeshift EOC's to

Why I Want to Be a Business Analysis
While working as a research intern with Tata Institute of Social Sciences in a village in India, I
undertook a study on the application of technology to bring about positive changes in the life of
rural population. We worked to understand the problems which the villagers faced and then
suggested solutions which leveraged the information technology. As a part of this study, I was
surprised to see the widespread impact of the solutions we suggested to them. It was thrilling to see
the impact of our suggestions within the scope of such a small–scale project. This was my first
experience as a consultant and it infused in me a desire to be one. It has since got me excited to
think of the impact created by Business Analysts,Business Consultants, Technology Consultants and
Product Managers towards corporate strategies and the future road–maps being modeled through
their innovations. At this stage in my career wherein I posses technical proficiency, I feel the need to
widen my horizon of knowledge to understand the business processes and bottlenecks involved
along with the process of designing software solutions to resolve them. My five and a half years of
experience within the industry has infused more enthusiasm in me towards these roles. The analytical

Factors That Influence The Adoption Of An Imis Essay
All the IMIS centers require enough resources to enable them to meet their own constituency
information needs especially concerning the processing, storage, and retrieval of large quantities of
information and data that may need sophisticated analysis and dissemination. It is essentialEssential
to the concept is that the centers be administered by skilled personnel who are capable of

4.13. Factors that Influence the Adoption of an IMIS
Many organizations today cannot operate effectively without adopting IMIS in their management
processes. The management information systems allow organizations to access the correct and
appropriate information and get it delivered to the right users in a time bound manner. Such
distribution of information and data is achieved through enhancing the interaction between the
generators of information and the users of the processed information in an organization. Many
system performance analysts have acknowledged that integrated management information system
has become an integral tool and play a significant role in the success of an organization. The system,
when correctly used, delivers appropriate information in a timely manner if and when required to
support decision making and management activities. One of the benefits that have been touted over
time is that the system has the potential of delivering information instantly without the need for

ESS are defined as learning support software tools that provides direct on–line access to relevant
summarised information in a useful and navigable format for the organisation as a whole (Kelly
1994 & Tech 2008).
The primary purpose of ESS at Sony is to support managerial learning about business activities, its
work processes, and its interaction with the external environment in the form of a user friendly
graphical interface. Informed managers can then ask better questions and make better decisions.
ESS are the most powerful managerial systems developed at Sony from the rest of their systems and
are hard to maintain (Fig.5).
ESS are easy to use usually touchpad and mouse driven but complex to develop (Tech 2008). They
are a benefit to Sony, especially tailoring to executives information needs with relevant information,
providing them with access to a broad range of internal and external data including yearly aggregate
and timely comparison reports which aid in exploring the root causes of failures and problems at
Sony. But still there are issues of organizational behaviour and culture, perhaps the most deadly
barriers to effective Executive Information Systems. Because EIS is typically positioned at the top

Introduction to Computer Application and Systems

Integrating certain information systems within a business organization will not only prove for a
faster more efficient workplace but will also improve the bottom line for company growth. Even
though there are numerous information systems that can be implemented and utilized to improve the
growth and expansion of the company, there are five information systems that the company should
focus on employing: office automation system, supply chain management system, management
information system, electronic commerce system, and transaction processing system. The

The PowerPoint capability will also help managers in conducting presentations for training
purposes. Essentially, an OAS will "focus on making managers and professionals more productive
and effective," (Gremillian and Pyburn, 1985, p 6, para 2). The only drawback in using this system
would be making sure that managers and employees stay up–to–date with the information provided
in emails and calendars. The next proposed information system for the business is the supply chain
management system. In a nutshell, this system would mostly consist of inventory control and
operations. The benefit of this system would allow the company to request specific products based
on the needs of the customers. Employees would be able to familiarize themselves with the sending
and receiving of inventory and learning about quality control. The only disadvantage to this system
would be providing low quality materials for customers, which results in product returns causing
churn. The fourth information system to be utilized in growth of a new company is the electronic
commerce system, also known as ecommerce. This system will provide access for the company to
reach out into the global market keeping geographical limitations to a minimum, which in turn can
cause growth and expansion. Ecommerce also enables small, up–and–coming businesses, as well as
customers, to sell or purchase products through the global market, (Bora, C., n,d). One downside to
ecommerce is that customers may

Essay On Manmade And Natural Disaster
Mitigating, and Responding to Manmade and Natural Disasters? The effects of natural and
manmade disasters have become more prevalent, far reaching, and widespread. As a consequence,
preserving the safety, security, and prosperity of all parts of our society is becoming more
challenging. Among various aspects of the U.S emergency management system, communication is
one of the most critical requirements. The word communicate implies conveying thoughts, ideas,
warnings, instructions, orders, command, knowledge and information (mass education and public
awareness), warning of impending threat of disasters, calling various resources and intimation to
authorities and conducting emergency management in general. Management of any disaster or
emergency event is a very complicated and multi faceted task. One of the most overlooked parts of
any efficient emergency disaster response is the exchange of information between different sources,
emergency managers and those impacted by the event. Lack of experience in the capacity of an
emergency manager can have its downside making the event more stressful and uncomfortable. The
entire emergency management process is made further complex when hindered by the lack of
effective information distribution and gathering. The word communication has a very remarkable
place in all walks of life. A person is an element of the society they live, nation and the world and
cannot live his or hers in isolation. People have to interact with

A management information system (MIS) is focused on information that management needs in order
for the job to be complete. This task becomes difficult when the major players have a tradition of

The operational level manager uses this data to check everyday tasks, i.e. ordering, shipping,
inventory control, the essence of the business processes. The second level in the framework is the
tactical system. This system provide middle–level managers with information to monitor and control
operation while allocating their resources efficiently. The data is summarized, aggregated, or
analyzed with a wide range of reports, i.e., summary, exception and ah hoc reports. The tactical
information system differs from operational information system in the basic purpose: operational
support the execution of tasks and a tactical information system supports a manager control over

Counselor Interview Paper
Counselor Interview What practice settings did you considered when you chose the counselor to
interview? I was considering interviewing a counselor in the community counseling setting as I,
myself is on the same track with the same interest, and motivation. However, while my interest falls
toward community settings or private practice, I interviewed a counselor who works at Cuyahoga
Community College on the east side campus. She has been counselor about 13 years. Prior to the
interview my understanding was, working as a counselor in a school stings, it would need to have
school counseling license. As she further explained it, as a LPC she is entitled to work in school
setting at Tri–C. She defined counseling a guidance that helps with the development of a student
academically and socially. What other professionals are employed in this setting and what are their
roles at the agency? As we continued the interview, she talked about their services that they provide
including academic, career, and personal counseling. Besides counselors, there are two par time
psychologists, who provide assessment for students. How does the professional counselor interact
with other professionals (e.g., interdisciplinary treatment team) The counselors do interact on
regular basis with the psychologists, as they have a common goal for its students, they work

Management Information Systems ( Mis )
Management Information Systems (MIS) are essential for any business whether you are a start–up

from your hardware and software to your Human Resources (HR) and manufacturing. I am going to
address of the components that are needed to make a completed MIS, some of these components
come with a hefty price, but regardless of the price these components will be key in turning your
business into a start–up to a thriving and ever growing business.
One of the first components that you will need to start building your MIS is the hardware this

designed to handle the explosive growth of increasingly mobile clients, be able to leverage vast
amounts of new data, and provide deeper real–time insight at the point for greatest business impact.
Your networking capabilities would be the next portion of the hardware component that you will
need and Arista is making a big name for themselves in the switches department by going after
companies like Cisco only to name a few. They have developed smaller more portable switches that
give you just as much if not more power than before. Having smaller switches will come in handy
for smaller businesses that are limited on space but still pack the same punch of what a larger more
expensive switch would provide. For the final piece that you would need for the hardware side of
your MIS would be your storage devices. This is important because if you are planning on collecting
thousands or even millions of user's data you will need a good amount of storage data. I chose to
stay with IBM for my storage device and system. IBM TS7700 is a family of mainframe virtual tape
solutions that optimize data protection and business continuance for System z data. The TS7700

The Emergency Management Planning Process
Life is full of unexpected disasters as well as calculated ones. As a whole, society cannot account for
all disasters that will occur nor can we successful eliminate the results of these disasters. That's why
in most advanced societies there are people in place to manage and or monitor natural disasters.
These people are in charge of the planning process and execution of emergency management
systems or operations. They are essentially the people responsible for ensuring that when a disaster
whether natural or acts of fate occur the effect on the community or society as whole is minimal.

The first step in the emergency process as stated in the introduction is to form a collaborative
planning team that will take the emergency situation head on. The team must understand emergency
planning as well as the ability to collaborate on an intellectual level with other team members. Each
member must have the same goal as well as objective. These objectives include providing safety for
people, property as well as facilities. The members must be comprehensive, which includes
provisions to assess the severity of potential hazard. The team will then move on to take steps to
eliminating the disaster or problem. In conclusion, the collaborative planning team must understand
the four fundamental theories of disasters. This serves to develop the most effective plan or process
for disaster relief. The four fundamental theories of disasters include acts of fate or God, acts of
nature or natural disasters, joint effects of nature and society and social constructions. Although each
disaster take on a different persona, the collaborative planning team can learn from past emergency
situations to aide in the understanding of the situation. Understanding a situation is essentially
gathering information and facts that arise from the situation. The emergency management team is to

History of management information system
The Management Information System was the whole of information technology originally. As early
as the 1960s, practitioners, and other business teaching institutions referred Management
Information System as information technology. In those days, the main role of enterprise computing
was to aid the CFO and CEO with information systems management for the purpose of running the
business. Some of the key procedures given to the CEOs are those of order entry, budgeting, and
accounting. Programmers only wrote codes to carry out these procedures since there was no
existence of enterprise applications. The system was termed as business critical because the business
would fail to in case it moved back to manual accounting. Failure of Management Information
System usually endangered the business. Hence, it forced that CFOs to make sure that developers
and administrators delivered everything that the accounting sector needed.

For Fictitious Company Globally, retailing is witnessing epic transformations. The use of
technology has fueled upheavals in the retail landscape that are revolutionary in scope, and
unprecedented in nature (Leventon, Gupta & Magal, 2011). Technology has advanced from the
automation of structured processes to systems that are truly revolutionary in that they introduce
change into the fundamental business procedures, workflow and management of an organization.
Numerous studies have shown that the employment of new or the updating of a business's existing
technology contributes to a firm's competitive advantage, which in turn creates greater value for the
customer (Altshuler, Gelb & Henry, 2010; Bharadwaj, 2000; Carr, 2003; Mellville, Kraemer, &

breaches by employees.
A competitive advantage exists when a company is able to deliver the same benefits as competitors

Service Based Applications (CBA)
Electronic Commerce has become such a massive and wide field of business, research and
development that it even poured into the service based applications of emerging electronic
commerce systems that are available anytime, anywhere on personally computing systems i.e.
Smartphone (Mahmoud Manafi, 2011).
Security
Security is one of the first and most frequently presented issues in Electronic Commerce, for
example online auction frauds (Lian & Michael, 2013). Security is the largest obstacle for
companies working via Electronic Commerce (Mandić, 2012). Consumers are highly concerned
with the possibility of having their details, required for online purchases, stolen or forwarded to
other companies' i.e. spam advertisement.
Security Measures
Unfortunately personal detail theft is not the only risk of Electric Commerce (E–Commerce), Print
Scan (P.S) attack is also a major problem. Though for every problem and dysfunction there is also a
solution i.e. watermarking in E–Commerce is the solution. Print Scan is the process is the process of

Companies are experiencing rapid growth of cultural diversity and they're realizing that many
organizational successes come from the diversity of the company. While cultural diversity has it
benefits, barriers to effective communication can sometime be hard because of our background. We
can sometime experience physical barriers, physical barrier exist when workers are located in a
different building or site. We can sometime experience system design which surfaces when a
problem with structure occurs. System design is a structure that is not clear and makes us confuse
and we don't know who to communicate with. For example at work I supervise several Clerk but it
is unclear to them if I am the supervisor because we share the job or if their team chief is there
supervisor because their assign to that team. Attitudinal barriers occur when there is a problem with
staff. Poor management, no consultation with employee and personality conflict can occur as a
result of attitudinal barriers.
In conclusion, cultural diversity does affected communication because of the way we interact with
each other. Misunderstanding plays a big part in effective communication. We have to be able to
send and receive messages clearly through effective communication. People have to be able to
receive and translate message to communicate effectively, when we are dealing with cultural

Management And Functional Areas

  • 1. Management and Functional Areas 1. In the light of the system, describe the decisions to be made in the area of strategic planning, managerial control and operational control? What information would you require to make such decisions? Ans. A management information system (MIS) is an organized combination of people, hardware, communication networks and data sources that collects, transforms and distributes information in an organization. An MIS helps decision making by providing timely, relevant and accurate information to managers. The physical components of an MIS include hardware, software, database, personnel and procedures. Management information is an important input for efficient performance of various managerial functions at different organization levels. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is also necessary to study the keys to successful Executive Information System (EIS) development and operation. Decision support systems would also make the system a complete MIS as it constitutes a class of computer–based information systems including knowledge–based systems that support decision–making activities. DSSs serve the management level of the organization and help to take decisions, which may be rapidly changing and not easily specified in advance. Improving personal efficiency, expediting problem solving (speed up the progress of problems solving in an organization), facilitating interpersonal communication, promoting learning and training, increasing organizational control, generating new evidence in support of a decision, creating a competitive advantage over competition, encouraging exploration and discovery on the part of the decision maker, revealing new approaches to thinking about the problem space and helping automate the managerial processes would make the system a complete MIS. • 3. Preparedness And Logistical Issues Of Emergency... Preparedness / Logistical Issues It is generally understood that each type of disaster requires a specific type of response. In the last twenty years floods and storms caused approximately fifty five percent of all worldwide natural disasters (Leeuw, Vis & Jonkman, 2012). Due to the fact, that floods are typically preceded by conditions such as heavy rains or high waters, generally it is easier to predict the possibility of flooding when compared to other natural disasters. Thus, due to the nature of floods preventive activities may be implemented that may prevent the flood form occurring. Some common practices such as filling sandbags or the use of dams are prime examples of preparatory activities. Unfortunately as demonstrated with hurricane Katrina, disaster preparedness is quite challenging. Logistics aspects of emergency preparedness are of utmost importance and consist of four phases: planning and preparation; monitoring extreme conditions; actual flooding; recovery (Leeuw, Vis & Jonkman, 2012). Flood emergency preparedness occurs in the planning and preparation phase. From previous experiences, emergency plans typically lack logistical insight. Thus, logistics must be understood and is defines as the process of planning, implementing and controlling the efficient and cost effective acquisition and delivery of needed materials from the point of origin to the point of consumption (Leeuw, Vis & Jonkman, 2012). Once again, the flooding of New Orleans due to hurricane ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Emergency Planning : Emergency Management Emergency Management Over the last ten years the issue of emergency management has been increasingly brought to the forefront. This is in response to a number of different events that highlighted the need for effective emergency management. As disasters ranging from the 911 terrorist attacks to Hurricane Katrina, underscore the need to have effective emergency management in place at all times. However, with the changing nature of the different threats requires that the emergency management system undergo a transformation, where it will eliminate the diverseness and rivalries of the past. This means that the various tools / tactics to change the situation should be examined and how the different silos (rivalries) can be resolved. These two factors together will provide administrators with the greatest insights as to how emergency management can adapt to the various threats in the future. The Most perplexing problem with Emergency Management is that it's far more reactive than proactive. What means and measures could change this situation? Reactive emergency response planning is when you are reacting to what events are occurring. Proactive emergency response planning is when you are planning ahead for a number of different situations. (Nirumpa) Since the largest problem to emergency response planning is many of different entities being more reactive to various incidents; means that a new approach must be taken. Immediately there are two tools / tactics that can be used to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A bad behaviour scenario is when this system does not meet the intended requirements and leaves the business less efficient and the customers dissatisfied. First scenario: A patient suffers from heart disease. Their medical consultation history such as appointments and follow–up care is taken care of by the case management system and the progress of their heart disease in managed by the disease management system. The patient moves houses and thus has a change in address, however this change, due to poor management, has only been recorded in the disease management system and thus the old address is still active in the case management system. Confidential health reports are sent to the wrong address due to the incorrect information in the case management system, unknown to the hospital. This compromises the patient 's medical privacy and also inconveniences them as they are not receiving their own personal health reports by mail. Second scenario: A ... Emergency Operations Center : Emergency Operation Center Emergency Operations Center In recent history, nature has displayed its fury on the earth, and on the people residing on it, with natural disasters such as hurricanes, tornados, tsunamis, etc. When this occurs, there is a need for a safe and secure location that is utilized to effectively manage emergency response and recovery activities. This is typically accomplished through the use of an Emergency Operations Center, otherwise known as an EOC. The EOC is a very important instrument in emergency management because it allows for vital personnel to coordinate and control response efforts in an emergency. The emergency operations center is the central point for the gathering and dissemination of information during a large scale emergency response. An EOC can be a full–time facility, staffed 24 hours a day and 7 days a week, or it may be a temporary location set by its needs. The staffing of an emergency operations center may slightly vary between EOC's; however, it is commonly made–up of representatives of departments responding to an incident. Being responsible for the strategic overview, an EOC is a vital part in emergency preparedness and emergency management Due to many complexities, in addition to many unknown factors that contribute to disasters, emergency operation centers come in many shapes and sizes. In general, many small public agencies do not have available space, manpower, or money to develop a permanent EOC, and therefore commonly set up makeshift EOC's to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The next proposed information system for the business is the supply chain management system. In a nutshell, this system would mostly consist of inventory control and operations. The benefit of this system would allow the company to request specific products based on the needs of the customers. Employees would be able to familiarize themselves with the sending and receiving of inventory and learning about quality control. The only disadvantage to this system would be providing low quality materials for customers, which results in product returns causing churn. The fourth information system to be utilized in growth of a new company is the electronic commerce system, also known as ecommerce. This system will provide access for the company to reach out into the global market keeping geographical limitations to a minimum, which in turn can cause growth and expansion. Ecommerce also enables small, up–and–coming businesses, as well as customers, to sell or purchase products through the global market, (Bora, C., n,d). The effects of natural and manmade disasters have become more prevalent, far reaching, and widespread. As a consequence, preserving the safety, security, and prosperity of all parts of our society is becoming more challenging. Among various aspects of the U.S emergency management system, communication is one of the most critical requirements. The word communicate implies conveying thoughts, ideas, warnings, instructions, orders, command, knowledge and information (mass education and public awareness), warning of impending threat of disasters, calling various resources and intimation to authorities and conducting emergency management in general. Management of any disaster or emergency event is a very complicated and multi faceted task. One of the most overlooked parts of any efficient emergency disaster response is the exchange of information between different sources, emergency managers and those impacted by the event. Lack of experience in the capacity of an emergency manager can have its downside making the event more stressful and uncomfortable. The entire emergency management process is made further complex when hindered by the lack of effective information distribution and gathering.
