3. 1. Keeping a journal of thought patterns. Individuals should
review this journal on a regular basis to identify negative
and positive thought patterns. Often, low self-esteem is
caused by a habit of negative thoughts and interpretations
of events. By identifying these patterns, individuals can
begin to break them.
2. Talking through negative thoughts. Challenging
automatic negative thoughts helps an individual uncover
the logic or emotion behind the thought. With practice,
individuals can confront these thoughts automatically to
identify more realistic thoughts.
3. Interpreting events positively. Rather than assuming the
worst about him or herself, individuals with low self-esteem
can practice taking a more realistic view. This too takes
practice, but with time, a more positive outlook and sense of
self should emerge.
