the story of Anthony of the desert of Egypt, father of monastic life

1. SAINT
ANTHONY
OF THE
DESERT

2. He is considered the founder of Christian monasticism and
the first of the abbots; to him we owe the permanent
constitution of families of monks who, under the
guidance of a spiritual father, abba, consecrated
themselves to the service of God.

3. His life was transmitted to us by Athanasius of Alexandria.

4. He is one of the four Eastern Church Fathers who
have the title of "Great" along with Athanasius
himself, Basil, and Photius of Constantinople.

known through
the Vita Antonii
published around
357, a
hagiographical
work written by
Athanasius, Bishop
of Alexandria.

6. A significant reference to the life of Antony is found
in the Vita Sancti Pauli primi eremitae written
by Saint Jerome in the years 375-377.

7. Anthony was
born in Coma
in Egypt
(modern Qumans)
around 251, son
of rich Christian
farmers.

8. He was
orphaned
before the age
of twenty, with
a fortune to
manage and a
younger sister
to care for

9. He soon felt that he should follow the evangelical exhortation: "If you
want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give it to the poor."

11. Having distributed his goods among the poor and entrusted his sister to a female
religious community, he followed the solitary life that other anchorites already
led in the deserts around his city, living in prayer, poverty and chastity.

12. He led a secluded life in solitude, where the fruits of
his work were used to obtain food and give charity.

13. In these early years he was tormented by very strong temptations,
he was assailed by doubts about the validity of this solitary life.

14. he locked himself in a tomb excavated in the rock near the town of Coma.
In this place he was attacked and beaten by the demons

him food and they took him to the village church, where he recovered

16. Anthony then headed towards the Red Sea at Mount Pispir, where there
was an abandoned Roman fort, with a water source. It was the year 285 and
he remained in this place for 20 years, feeding only on the bread that was
brought over to him twice a year. In this place he continued his search for total
purification, despite being severely tormented, according to legend, by the devil.

17. Over time, many people wanted to stay close to him and, breaking down the
walls of the fort, they freed Anthony from his refuge. Anthony then dedicated
himself to alleviating suffering by working , "cures" and "delivering the devil".

18. Anthony's group of followers divided into two communities, one to
the east and one to the west of the Nile River. These Desert Fathers
lived in caves and ravines, but always under the guidance of an
older hermit and with Anthony as their spiritual guide.

19. Anthony contributed to the spread of hermitage which
is different from cenobitism (communal monks)

Anthony in 307 seeking
advice on founding
a monastic community
at Majuma, a maritime
city near Gaza where the
first Christian monastery
in Palestine was built.

23. In 311, during the persecution of the Emperor Massimino Daia, Anthony
returned to Alexandria to support and console the persecuted Christians.

25. Although always in contact with Athanasius and supporting him in the fight against Arianism,
Anthony lived his last years in the Thebaid desert where, praying and cultivating a small
garden for his own sustenance, he died at the age of 105, probably in 356.

desert, the relics
would first be
transferred to the
city of Alexandria.

6th century.

28. In the 11th century, the French nobleman Jaucelin (Joselino), lord of
Châteauneuf, in the diocese of Vienne, obtained them as a gift from
the Emperor of Constantinople and brought them to France

29. In the village of La Motte aux Bois that later took the name of
Saint-Antoine-l'Abbaye, a church that housed the relics was placed
under the guardianship of the Benedictine priory, that was part
of the abbey of Montmajour (near Arles, in Provence)

33. Saint Anthoy is also considered the protector of
domestic animals, so much so that he is usually
represented next to a pig with a bell around its neck.

blesses animals and stables by placing
them under the saint's protection.
