- IntroTell about how I get stuck doing MLA most of the time. I love citation. The mechanics of it. The rules, the challenge of creating a citation for that crazy weird source. My biggest challenge is teaching it and providing enough tools so that a student who is struggling doesn’t have to struggle. One of the biggest challenges in our jobs is getting students to understand when to cite and how to cite. Students think citation is the hardest part of writing a paper. How many times have you heard it. When in reality once they learn where to find the rules and how to apply them it really is the easiest part. They have the outline, the guidelines, the rules, they just need to follow them. Teaching them that making them understand that is the hardest part of our job when it comes to citation.Today I’m going to talk about MLA style and preview the major changes that are coming with the new edition of the handbook. I’m going to mention some of the problem citations. I’m going to show you some of the tools that we’ve built at LSCC to deal with citation.
- First major change is the addition of a medium of publication. Not where it’s published, but how. Book example. Take note of the title. No more underline. Now we italicize

- Major database change. No longer requires college name and all info. Just dbase name, medium of publication, in this case web and the date.
- Here we have the same thing
- No more continuous page numbering insanity. Notice how in the new journal citation we have volume and number. They acknowledge that the issue number makes it easier to identify journals with both continuous and non continuous pagination. They leave out that it can be nearly impossible to identify continuous pagination with any certainty in a database. For undergrads the distinction between a journal and a magazine is hard enough. They simply don’t understand the old distinction.
- We remember this citation right? How do you feel about this. Is there anything about an internet citation that you’ve pulled you hair out about. Mentions “fluidity” of the web (the ability to move seamlessly thru documents via links and often not knowing when one document ends and another starts. States that inclusion of URL’s in citations “have limited value” change quickly, are too long to type in correctly in some cases, and can be specific to a user or a session.Including the URL is vague and should be left up to the user’s discretion States, “you should include a URL as supplementary information only when the reader probablycannot locate the source without it or when you publisher requires it.”Sticks the medium of publication between the two dates to make it seem less awkward.

For most cases it doesn’t matter but in some cases it does. This source is from a blog. I did several web searches and could not find this without the URL. It is apparent to me that I need the URL in this case. But what about the student. This then becomes a teaching issue. What is the purpose of a citation. To give credit and to be able to get back to the original source. If you can’t get back to the original source then proper credit has not been given. Students need to be taught that for every web site they use they need to be make sure that the citation will lead them back to the original source with a reasonable web search. Also a selling point for the databases because they don’t need to do extra work. Reasonable attempts to find site using just the title of the page and title of the site

- Blurring of sources – what’s important? OVRC example. Which citation is correct! This is very subjective. In this case it’s only 3 years difference but it may make a difference depending on assignment parameters or just common sense.
- Since these aren’t scholarly publications they aren’t addressed specifically in the Guide. They may be addressed more specifically when the handbook arrives. These have been cobbled together from the existing sections. Page 214. Don’t know if we should include the author’s name if it’s a screen name or not.
- APA is a professional guide. It does not endorse the use of message boards, blogs or you tube. These citations have been cobbled together from the examples in the guide p. 278. It stresses that boards should only be used if the messages are archived and can be retrieved. then you have to be selective. The identifier for Video file has been adapted from p. 281 where they used the term data file.
