In an effort to counter cheating during high school final exams,
the Quebec Education Ministry has put out feelers searching for
a company to monitor social media networks.
Last spring a portion of the Grade 10 final exam was cancelled
after an essay question, worth 25% of the final mark, was leaked
and posted on Facebook.

The Force: Volkswagen Commercial
Viral Videos
In the Spring of 2008, United Airlines customer,
Dave Carroll (born in Timmins (ON), now living in Halifax (NS)),
witnessed baggage handlers throwing his $3,500 Taylor guitar.
When Carroll finally reached his destination he opened his
guitar case to find the guitar had in-fact been broken.
For nine months he called customer support to receive
compensation for his broken instrument.
Finally, when he received his final “no” he vowed to make a
music video about his negative experience and post it on the
web for all to see.

Response
United Airlines took a week to react to the video and by that
time it had “gone viral.” Finally, when United Airlines did call to
compensate for the damages, Carroll declined because the
exposure was worth more than the $1,200 it cost for him to fix
the instrument.
Outcome
United Airlines stock price plunged 10% costing shareholders
$180 million.
United Airlines neglected to respond quickly to this video and
suffered the consequences when it eventually went viral and
has had over 7,000,000 views to date.

Two of the world’s biggest digital information platforms say they’re getting ready to
roll out tools in Canada designed to crack down on so-called “fake news.”
Both Google and Facebook have been testing online tools in the U.S. and the U.K.
aimed at helping users identify credible information posted on their web portals.
And they say they expect to provide similar tools to Canadian users soon.
Google has incorporated a “fact-check” tag into some news pages to help readers
find fact-checked content in large stories.

Facebook is probably the only company that possesses a high level of detailed customer
information. The more users use Facebook, the more information they suck out. Heavily
investing in their ability to collect, store, and analyze data, Facebook does not stop there.
Apart from analyzing user data, Facebook has other ways of determining user behavior.
1. Tracking cookies: Facebook tracks its users across the Web with the use of tracking
cookies. If a user is logged into Facebook and simultaneously browses the Web,
Facebook can track the sites they are visiting.
2. Facial recognition: The latest investment of Facebook is in facial recognition and image
processing capabilities. Facebook can track its users throughout the Web and other
Facebook profiles due to the image data that is stored with them due to user sharing.
3. Tag suggestion: Tag suggestions can be made on user photos due to image processing
and facial recognition.
4. Analyzing the ‘Likes’: Researchers at Cambridge University and Microsoft Research
shows how the patterns of Facebook ‘Likes’ can very accurately predict your sexual
orientation, satisfaction with life, intelligence, emotional stability, religion, alcohol use
and drug use, relationship status, age, gender, race and political views among many
others.”

The Top 4 Ways to Use Facebook in Your Classroom
1. Create a Facebook Group for Your Class
By creating a group and adding your students to it, you will be
able to stay in touch with them effectively.
This practice will allow you to share assignment details, outlines
and other important information.
If you wish to start a project for your class, you will be able to
share complete details in the group and every student will have
access to it.
You will be able to post home work details as well. This way, your
students will have no trouble going through your requirements
from home.

2. Share Videos Related to Your Course
Create your own videos. Keep them short, interesting and
to-the-point. This way your students will not mind watching
them. If your videos are long, chances are that most of your

of knowledge. You can find all kinds of tutorials there. You
will easily find quality tutorials related to fitness, design,
languages, cooking, science, math, dissertation help and
much more.

1. Do use your real name. The idea behind these sites is for
friends to stay in touch and reconnect.
2. Do create your photo albums with privacy settings
so only your friends can see them.
3. Do tag the pictures you post so that friends know when
you have put their picture online.
4. Do use the Facebook privacy settings to limit who can see
your full profile. Set it so that only friends can see things like
your pictures, your wall, and your personal and contact
information.

2. Don’t be afraid to allow some people to only see a limited
version of your profile.
3. Don’t ever announce on your wall, or on any public wall,
where you plan to go or who you plan to go with. Cyber
stalkers are a real threat and if you have one this tells them
where to find you in real life.
4. Don’t be afraid to join public groups about interests you
share. Just be careful what you post on the walls of these
groups.

5. Don’t accept Facebook invites to events. If you plan to
attend send your acceptance using a private message or tell
the host when you see them in person.
6. Don’t use Facebook to bully, harass, spread rumors,
challenge fights or otherwise incite violence. Facebook is a
