Its a no brainier Neurosurgery has to stay in Dunedin!
Over 90 brain injuries in New Zealand a day, the South Island has a lot of HARD
people living here who think they are bullet proof.
We may not have many bullets flying around, but we have a lot of mountain
bikers, rugby players, kayakers etc...and plenty of people out for a good night
when they randomly get assaulted! or accidentally smack their heads.
Who are going to treat these people? Is it not the first 60 minutes that count in
critical care?
A plane ride to Christchurch takes about this long.
The people making these decisions with their PHD have they had people
needing this care?
Are they even aware what a TBI (traumatic brain injury) is?

Richard Thomson There are so many reasons why this is a dumb
proposal Toni, but the travel time and the disconnect from family have
to be right up there. Currently the longest distance from anywhere in
NZ to a neurosurgery service is from Kaitai to Auckland. This proposal
would result in a travel distance twice that for Most Southland patients

Michelle Abernethy Please keep it here, We need it.
It is hard enough dealing with an unwell family member let alone having to
travel.
People need care and support close to home not having to fly somewhere else
to get care.
These days families can't afford to be travelling long distances to care and
support their loved ones when they can have it in their own city.
I have a family member who is using this service and i know that it would have
been a struggle for his family to travel to CHCH and his children would want
their dad close by not at the end of a phone!

Tanea Paterson This matters soo much to all of us. My Dad experienced a
brain tumor back in 1991. The service that my family received was necessary,
and supportive also. Unfortunatly my Dad suffered from a reoccurance of his
tumor and passed away 2yrs after he was diagnosed. During that 2 year period
it was invaluable to us that we had these services close to home, financially and
emotionally. I can't imagine what it would have been like to not have our family
home to go to for showers and breaks, a hotel in a different city would have
been awful. Keeping some sort of 'normality' in such a heartbreaking situation
was extremely important for my Dad, as well as my family.
Please speak loud, in this situation with a health service often 'once it's gone,
it's gone.'

Nadine Russell There are thousands of families living South of Christchurch, in
the lower South Island who are reliant on such a facility remaining handy to
them and their families.
We NEED to retain this service in Dunedin....where it should remain.

Anne Mechen Anyone of us could need this service, who knows what
tomorrow holds. We must fight for this service to stay. Any delays in
treatment can be detrimental to the long term outcome for any Neuro
patient. Dunedin is known as a student city, all you parents from out of
town please support this service, it is often young people who end up in
the Neuro-surg ward. as an X-Paediatric nurse myself I have seen many
young ones in need of this wonderful service.

Kathryn Wealleans You don't have to be over 50 to be worried. Last year my
sister-in-law, who is only in her 30s had a brain aneurism. Thanks to Dunedin
Hospital she is still with us. It was touch and go though with the helicopter
unable to travel north to Oamaru to pick her up despite it being late September.
If the helicopter can't get to Oamaru how will it get to Christchurch? The
hospital have said that many women in their 30s get aneurisms and the only
way to save them is emergency surgery done by experts. I have heard of other
people have long term brain injuries as a result of the surgery going wrong and
being put in a nursing home in their 30s and 40s as there is no where else for
them to go. If the neurosurgeons all go to Christchurch we will have many more
young people not surviving aneurisms or if they do survive they may have
permanent long term damage.

Linda Strang Please keep neurosurgery in Dunedin. I have been a
neurosurgery patient and without the services provided here @ the time I
needed surgery the outcome for me may have been very different. It is essential
for these services to stay in Dunedin for the treatment and ongoing care of

Eleanor Rudolph It is imperative to keep the neurosurgery unit in Dunedin to
service the people of the South many of whom have long distances to travel for
specialist services as it is. The distance would be too great for many travelling
to Chch who may die or be severely brain damaged because of the delay getting
surgery.

Trudy Plato keep the neurosurgery in Dunedin. it is all about saving money for
the government and that is unfair as it will cost lives. leave the specialist to do
their jobs and do it well.
20 hours ago · Comment · Like · Flag
Samuel Mann Trudy, it is certainly unfair and will almost certainly
cost lives. The crazy thing is though, the proposal will cost money
rather than save it. This will cost Otago/Southland $2M+ more for an
inferior service (and that's not counting the human cost). The only
driver I can see is the work hours of Christchurch doctors making it
easier for them to undertake private practice. We do need to
collaborate with Canterbury, but with a regionalised 4-2 split of doctors
(rather than a centralised 6-nil).
19 hours ago · Like · Delete
Richard Thomson Hi Trudy, Thanks for your support. This one is not
about saving money(it will cost more). Unfortunately the Canterbury
neurosurgeons are very much in favour of this centralisation. Life is
complicated sometimes and the easy pot shots aren't alway the correct
ones. Cheers, Richard

Gordon Cessford Just heard a radio NZ report quoting an Auckland
neurosurgeon who said they had growing waiting lists from rapidly increasing
referrals there - he referred to a trend of increasing demand. Given CHCH has
recently been reporting having general capacity issues - such a trend of
icnreasin demenad generally begs the question of why more overload would be
placed there from channeling everyone in the South through the one bottleneck
(notwithstanding all the other good reasons to keep some decent capacity in the
south). For Southerners, not only would they have to travel further for a riskier,
more difficult and more expensive service, but they'd probably have to wait
longer as well.

James Macbeth Dann I wonder ... are people willing to have their taxes
increased to support these sort of services? I, personally, am. But this debate
will be happening more and more in the future unless we, collectively, decide
that we do consider health to be something that we want and something that
we are willing to pay for. Economies of scale will continue to financially
disadvantage smaller hospitals - not just Dunedin, but Timaru, Ashburton,
Westland, Oamaru, Invercargill. While I suspect that this group and the media
campaign will convince a poll-based government to intervene, we need to have
a debate at a national level about what we expect from our health services, how
it is delivered, and how we are going to pay for it.

Peter Bradshaw James, I don't understand your post. Are you
suggesting that it will increase health costs to retain two
neurosurgeons on site in Dunedin? The information provided by Richard
Thomson indicates that the two- site option will cost an estimated $2M
a year less than the Canterbury single site option.

In fact employing perminant surgeons will cost less than running a

would seem those in Chch responsible for the push to downgrade Dunedin

sensible negotiation by Canterbury Health prevail.

Helen Johnston There is no doubt The neurosurgery team in Dunedin have
saved my daughters life on more than 1 occasion. But unfortunately the recent
neurosurgery situation in Dunedin has left a lot to be desired & I still would
rather see someone who knows what they are talking about in ChCh rather than
see a registrar who has never seen a case like ours before in Dunedin
so.................. It would be a disaster not to have urgent cases going to Dunners
however & for us in Invers that would be the difference between life & death OR
normal function & vegetative state so we can not let this happen & I ask all that

Ally Hills All that is going to be achieved if Dunedin shut their doors is a longer
wait time for everybody in CHCH. They can barely keep up now, let alone
adding the rest of the South Island to the list. Families who use this service in
Dunedin, NEED it to stay there so they have family support around, plain and
simple. I think of my cousin and her husband currently using this service, and if
they have to travel to CHCH for the SAME service, it just wouldn't work. They
need family support to help with their young kids....
It's just a money saving antic, and just goes to prove this current government
does not care about the safety and care of Dunedin people. It's all about lining
the coffers. Sad state of affairs really.
I am post op 6 weeks from neurosurgery here in CHCH, I had to wait 6 weeks
from when my neurosurgeon decided I needed urgent surgery...imagine how
long I would have had to wait if Dunedin patients are added to that list.
