  1. 1. ASTM Standard on Apparel ASTM International, formerly known as the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), is a globally recognized leader in the development and delivery of international voluntary consensus standards. Today, some 12,000 ASTM standards are used around the world to improve product quality, enhance safety, facilitate market access and trade, and build consumer confidence. ASTM’s leadership in international standards development is driven by the contributions of its members: more than 30,000 of the world’s top technical experts and business professionals representing 150 countries. Working in an open and transparent process and using ASTM’s advanced electronic infrastructure, ASTM members deliver the test methods, specifications, guides, and practices that support industries and governments worldwide. ASTM International, known until 2001 as the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), is an international standards organization that develops and publishes voluntary consensus technical standards for a wide range of materials, products, systems, and services. The organization's headquarters is in West Conshohocken, Pennsylvania, about 5 mi (8.0 km) northwest of Philadelphia. ASTM, founded in 1898 as the American Section of the International Association for Testing and Materials, predates other standards organizations such as BSI (1901), DIN (1917), ANSI (1918) and AFNOR (1926 Standards The standards produced by ASTM International fall into six categories:  The Standard Specification, that defines the requirements to be satisfied by subject of the standard.  The Standard Test Method, that defines the way a test is performed and the precision of the result. The result of the test may be used to assess compliance with a Standard Specification.  The Standard Practice that defines a sequence of operations that, unlike a Standard Test Method, does not produce a result.  The Standard Guide that provides an organized collection of information or series of options that does not recommend a specific course of action.  The Standard Classification, that provides an arrangement or division of materials, products, systems, or services into groups based on similar characteristics such as origin, composition, properties, or use.  The Terminology Standard, that provides agreed definitions of terms used in the other standards. The quality of the standards is such that they are frequently used worldwide.
  2. 2. Textile Standards ASTM's textile standards provide the specifications and test methods for the physical, mechanical, and chemical properties of textiles, fabrics, and cloths, as well as the natural and artificial fibers that constitute them. The textiles covered by these standards are commonly formed by weaving, knitting, or spinning together fibers such as glass fiber strands, wool and other animal fibers, cotton and other plant-derived fibers, yarn, sewing threads, and mohair, to name a few. These textile standards help fabric and cloth designers and manufacturers in testing textiles to ensure acceptable characteristics towards proper end-use. Slim subjects are of same stature (height), with a slimmer body, and lower body weight than regular subjects as illustrated by the measurement charts.
  28. 28. 1.5 The values stated in either acceptable SI units or inch-pound units shall be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system must be used independently of the other, without combining values in any way. 1.6 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. Flammability ASTM D1230 - 10 Standard Test Method for Flammability of Apparel Textiles Significance and Use Test Method D1230 cannot be recommended for the acceptance testing of commercial shipments since Federal regulations require apparel fabrics to meet the criteria of 16 CFR Part 1610 and correlation of test results with actual performance has not been established. Although Test Method D1230 is not recommended for acceptance testing, it is useful because it provides a less expensive and time consuming research tool than 16 CFR Part 1610. In case of a dispute arising from differences in reported test results when using Test Method D1230 for testing of commercial shipments, the purchaser and the supplier shall conduct comparative tests to determine if there is a statistical bias between their laboratories. Competent statistical assistance is recommended for the investigation of bias. At a minimum, the two parties shall take a group of test specimens which are as homogeneous as possible and which are from a lot of material of the type in question. The test specimens shall be randomly assigned in equal numbers to each laboratory for testing. The average results from the two laboratories shall be compared using a nonparametric test for unpaired data and an acceptable probability level chosen by the two parties before testing is begun. If a bias is found, either its cause must be found and corrected or the purchaser and the supplier must agree to interpret future test results in light of the known bias. All fabrics made of natural or regenerated cellulose, as well as many made from other natural or man- made fibers, are combustible. Some combustible fabrics when used for clothing are potentially dangerous to the wearer because of such factors as ease of ignition, flame spread time, amount of heat released, and design of the garment. This test measures two such factors: ease of ignition and flame spread time. In order to place fabrics in one of the three flammability classes, arbitrary limits have been selected for time of application of the flame and for time of flame spread. These limits are based on extensive testing experience and are believed to be a useful guide in judging the relative flammability of apparel textiles. It must be understood, however, that no guarantee can be given and none is implied that garments made from a fabric or product falling into any one of the flammability classes will not be hazardous under some conditions.
  29. 29. Because of the sensitivity of fabrics to ambient atmospheric conditions, technique of specimen preparation, and inherent variability in the cloth itself, test results are not always closely reproducible either in the same laboratory or among several laboratories. Finishes and fabric surface changes can exert a large effect on flammability. Therefore, fabrics are tested before as well as after one cycle of drycleaning followed by laundering. This test method is not applicable to hats, gloves, footwear, or interlining fabrics. 1. Scope 1.1 This test method covers the evaluation of the flammability of textile fabrics as they reach the consumer for or from items other than children's sleepwear or protective clothing. 1.2 This test method measures and describes the response of materials, products, or assemblies to heat and flame under controlled conditions, but does not by itself incorporate all factors required for fire hazard or risk assessment of the materials, products, or assemblies under actual fire conditions. 1.3 Fire testing is inherently hazardous. Adequate safeguards for personnel and property shall be employed in conducting these tests. Note 1—This test method is not identical to 16 CFR Part 1610, Flammability of Clothing Textiles. Consumer Product Safety Commission regulations require that fabrics introduced into commerce meet the requirements of 16 CFR Part 1610. 1.4 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard; inch-pound units are provided for information only. 1.5 This test method does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this test method to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. ASTM D6545 - 10 Standard Test Method for Flammability of Textiles Used in Children's Sleepwear Significance and Use This test method is suitable for evaluating flammability characteristics and laundering durability of textiles used in the manufacture of children's sleepwear. It is not suitable for evaluating the flammability characteristics of textiles for other product applications or ignition scenarios. The procedure for flammability testing used in this test method is technically equivalent to those used in 16 CFR 1615 and 1616. This test method does not include detailed specimen sampling plans, or the
  30. 30. regulatory and record keeping requirements cited in the federal regulations. Please consult 16 CFR 1615 and 1616 for information for these operations. This test method is suitable for training technicians to conduct the federal test and can serve as a laboratory reference. In the future, if the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission updates the federal regulations to revise the textile refurbishing methods to those in current industry use, this test method will be revised to reflect those changes. 1. Scope 1.1 This test method evaluates the relative flammability of textiles and garments intended for use in children's sleepwear. The procedures of this test method follow testing and laundering procedures used to evaluate the flammability of children's sleepwear contained in US Federal Regulations 16 CFR 1615 and 1616. 1.2 A textile used in children's sleepwear must be tested in its original state and after 50 laundering and drying cycles to assess the flame resistance of the textile relative to its use life. 1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard; inch-pound units are provided for information only. 1.4 This test method is used to measure and describe the response of materials, products, or assemblies to heat and flame under controlled conditions, but does not by itself incorporate all factors required for fire hazard or fire risk assessment of the materials, products, or assemblies under actual fire conditions. 1.5 Fire testing is inherently hazardous. Adequate safeguards for personnel and property shall be employed in conducting these tests. 1.6 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determines the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. Specific precautionary information is found in 8.5 and 9.5. Home Furnishings ASTM D4112 - 02(2008) Standard Performance Specification for Woven Umbrella Fabrics Significance and Use Upon agreement between the purchaser and the supplier, fabrics intended for this end use should meet all of the requirements listed in Table 1 of this specification.
  31. 31. It is recognized that for purposes of fashion or aesthetics the ultimate consumer of articles made from these fabrics may find acceptable fabrics that do not conform to all of the requirements in Table 1. Therefore, one or more of the requirements listed in Table 1 may be modified upon agreement between the purchaser and the supplier. In such cases, any references to the specification shall specify that: “This fabric meets ASTM Specification D 4112 except for the following characteristic(s).” Where no prepurchase agreement has been reached between the purchaser and the supplier, and in case of controversy, the requirements listed in Table 1 are intended to be used as a guide only. As noted in 5.2, ultimate consumer demands dictate varying performance parameters for any particular style of fabric. The uses and significance of particular properties and methods are discussed in the appropriate sections of the specified methods. 1. Scope 1.1 This performance specification covers woven fabrics comprised of any textile fiber or mixture of fibers to be used in umbrellas. 1.2 These requirements apply to both the length and width directions for those properties where fabric direction is pertinent. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. ASTM D4113 - 02(2013) Standard Performance Specification for Woven Slipcover Fabrics Significance and Use 5.1 Fabrics intended for this end-use should meet all of the requirements listed inTable 1 . 5.2 It should be recognized that fabrics can be produced with an almost infinite number of combination of construction variables (for example, type of fibers, percentage of fibers, yarn twist, yarn number, warp and pick count, chemical and mechanical finishes). Additionally, fashion or aesthetics dictate that the ultimate consumer may find acceptable articles made from fabrics that do not conform to all of the requirements in Table 1. 5.2.1 Hence, no single performance specification can possibly apply to all the various fabrics that could be utilized for this end-use. 5.3 The uses and significance of particular properties and test methods are discussed in the appropriate sections of the specified test methods.
  32. 32. 1. Scope 1.1 This performance specification covers woven fabrics comprised of any textile fiber or mixture of fibers to be used in slipcovers. Labeling ASTM D3136 - 14 Standard Terminology Relating to Care Labeling for Apparel, Textile, Home Furnishing, and Leather Products Significance and Use 1. Scope 1.1 This standard is a compilation of terminology developed by Subcommittee D13.62 on Labeling that is related to refurbishing and labeling for apparel, textile, home furnishing, and leather products other than upholstered furniture and floor coverings. 1.2 This terminology provides a uniform language for the disclosure of care instructions on labels that are to be attached to apparel, textile, home furnishing, and leather products according to the Federal Trade Commission’s regulation 16 CFR, Part 423 (See 2.3). 1.3 These terms, definitions and descriptions employ common meanings for the care instructions required to be on textile products sold in the U.S. 1.4 This terminology is unique to the care of textile and leather products as the meanings are often expressed in phrases for care processes related to home-type washers, dryers, drying techniques and those for professional care. 1.5 For definitions of other textile terms, see Terminology D123.
  33. 33. ASTM D5489 - 14 Standard Guide for Care Symbols for Care Instructions on Textile Products Significance and Use 4.1 This guide provides symbols and a system for their use by which care instructions for textile products can be conveyed in a simple, space-saving, and easily understood pictorial format that is not language dependent. See also ADJD5489 4.2 Care symbols are an important means for identifying the appropriate care procedure for home laundering, commercial laundering, professional textile care, and coin-operated drycleaning, of textile products. 4.3 Care labeling using symbols can be used by the purchaser to select textiles on the basis of the care method required without knowledge of the language. 4.4 In countries in which a word-based care labeling system is required, the care symbol system may be used as a supplemental system. 4.5 The word-based instructions for each symbol in this guide are harmonious with Terminology D123, and D3136, the United States Federal Trade Commission Care Labeling Rule, 16 CFR 423 and industry practice (see Figs. 1 and 2). 1. Scope 1.1 This guide provides a uniform system of symbols for the disclosure of care instructions on textile products such as apparel, piece goods, and household and institutional articles, hereinafter referred to as “textile,” or “textile product.” 1.2 This guide provides a comprehensive system of symbols to represent care instructions reducing language-dependent care instructions. 1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
  34. 34. UV Protective Fabrics and Clothing ASTM D6603 - 12 Standard Specification for Labeling of UV-Protective Textiles Significance and Use 1. Scope 1.1 This standard describes labeling requirements for textile products intended for the protection of humans from UVA and UVB radiation. 1.2 This standard is not intended to be used for the labeling of medical-device sun protective fabrics and clothing whose labeling is specified in the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Draft Guidance for the Preparation of a Premarket Notification document. 1.3 The label requirements are in addition to those required by the Care Labeling Rule and fiber content (composition) labeling acts (Wool Products Labeling Act of 1939, and The Textile Fiber Products Identification Act). 1.4 This document contains terminology to be used in the labeling of UV-protective textiles. 1.5 Labeling recommended in this specification will be based on UV protection data collected by instrumental methods.
