Class this semester has been good. It was a well taught and constructed course. The atmosphere was
always enjoyable unlike a few of my classes. Professor Airek created an open environment that let me
as a student feel as ease communicating and being involved in class. We ve shared many laughs and I
ve grown as a writer and as a student. I ve learned that essays need to be turned in on time and stapled
together. But most of all, I have learned to never give up. One experience in class that I won t forget
was on a Monday morning when we watched a deer frolic through campus like it was his natural
habitat. It just really symbolizes our class and how it is based around random comedy. I can vouch that
simple things like that and cracking jokes in class makes students more at ease in the classroom. We
aren t completely dreading waking up at 7:30 AM every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday when we
know we that class isn t going to be hell. Even while we are having fun in class, we simultaneously
learn things through either short, non throat slitting lectures and/or interesting exercises. I say
interesting because I ve never done things in any of my English classes in high school like I ve done in

There were several prevailing thoughts towards connections present during the time in England on the
cusp of High Modernism. The importance of connections with others was one that was specifically
addressed in much of the literature. E.M. Forster even highlighted the idea in his novel Howard s End
with the epigraph only connect . The idea supports the notion that, in order for a society to survive and
thrive, some degree of connection must be adequately maintained. Yet, through the stratification of
social classes in England at the time, there was little social connection being preserved. To address the
issue, authors like Virginia Woolf and Forster included connection as a prominent theme in their
works. Both Woolf s Mrs. Dalloway and Forster s Howard s End address connection through their
characters as well as geographical locations. In each of these stories, the underlying theme of
connecting highlights the characters struggles to only connect .
It would seem as if Forster is urging connection by illustrating that, without some degree of
connecting, social classes would remain stratified and society would fall into utter ruin. Through the

Pearl Harbor. After a re supply in San Francisco, Marathon returned to Buckner Bay, Okinawa. On
Sunday, July 22, 1945, at around 1:30 a.m. a one man, Japanese suicide submarine, human torpedo ,
slipped into Buckner Bay and slammed into the anchored Marathon...detonating on contact. The
explosion ripped through a port side berthing compartment of the construction and repair gangs,
killing and wounding many of the men while they slept. The repair crews fought hard and were able to
save the ship, despite suffering heavy casualties in the explosion. One of the men lost to the repair
crew was Shipfitter 3/c Sylvester A. Fortin Jr. Sylvester sustained multiple wounds in the initial
explosion and died later that day.
Sylvester Fortin was born in Portland October 20, 1924, and with his brother Walter, grew up on the
family farm in Falmouth. He was married to Corinne Adrianna Bartlett and was the father of two

Like the experiment done by Conway et al, Neisser and Harsch investigated people s memory
accuracy of the incident 24 hours after the explosion and then again two years after. The results were:
one day after the disaster, 215 of the participants said that they heard about the disaster on television.
Two and a half years later 45% of the participants claimed to have heard of the event on the television.
Their memories of how they learned the news about the challenger disaster changed over time and
was a huge loophole in the studies in favor of flashbulb memory. Through this study it can be
concluded that flashbulb memories are not reliable and may in fact just be ordinary memories.
From Brown and Kulik to Neisser and Harsch we arrive at completely different conclusions. There are
many strengths to these studies, as they were all with real events that would have affected people
emotionally, but some of the studies were lacking in validity. The studies that recorded before and
after seemed to be more compelling than the ones that just assumed a certain answer. However, the
longer the duration of time between the before and after results most likely produced more variables
being tested, rather than just one. Based on the studies outlined it only seems accurate that these
flashbulb memories actually exist and affect our memory. The real analysis of these findings are how
they actually influence behavior. Emotion can affect memory, and ultimately behavior in someone s
